ZEISS 25mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

The wide angle Distagon T* 25mm f/2.0 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F Mount is the most advanced version of the legendary Distagon, a high-performance manual focusing lens with close focus capabilities, first introduced in 1961. The Distagon T* 25mm f/2.0 ZF.2 is a recalculation of this design, with an exceptionally fast f/2.0 maximum aperture, for use with modern SLRs and DSLRs using either full-frame or smaller sensors.

The ZF.2 lenses feature an electronic interface (CPU) which supports all important operating modes such as shutter priority, aperture priority and programmed auto exposure or manual exposure. Manual settings are available on non-AI compatible camera housings. On camera models without an electronic interface, the aperture is manually set on the lens aperture ring.

Increasing the versatility of this 25mm f/2.0 lens is its close focusing distance of only 9.8", providing a wider perspective than usual. Combined with a digital SLR with a 1.5x crop factor, the lens has an effective focal length of 38mm and becomes a moderate wide angle lens.

This precision lens delivers breathtaking images. It is ideally suited for nature and landscapes, but you can get amazing perspectives on almost any subject from portraits to products...all you need is your creativity.

Exceptionally fast f2.0 maximum aperture provides superb low-light capabilities
Chromatic aberrations on this lens have been virtually eliminated, thanks to a special optical construction and selection of optical glass.
Two aspheric lens surfaces correct distortion and image field curvature, and the floating elements design creates high imaging performance, regardless of the distance of the subject.
The almost circular design of the aperture produces an exceptional "bokeh", beautifully reproducing the out-of-focus areas of the image.
The ZF.2 lenses are an enhanced version of the ZF lenses. They feature an electronic interface (CPU) which enables the ZF.2 lenses to support all important operating modes such as shutter priority, aperture priority and programmed auto exposure or manual exposure settings even on non-AI compatible camera housings.
Photographers no longer have to set the parameters in the camera menu (as they did with earlier lenses) as the ZF.2 lenses now transmit standard data such as focal length, speed and the aperture setting to the camera. This data can then be viewed in the EXIF data of each picture.
The silver fork coupling on Nikon AI-compatible cameras is not available on ZF.2 lenses. For this reason, you cannot use light metering on older cameras (F, F2, Nikkormat, etc.).
This lens features a precise focusing mechanism with a large rotation angle. Operating it manually means controlling the picture with your fingertips.
ZEISS lenses are famous for the exceptional quality of the pictures they provide. They boast optimum control of glare and stray light to ensure brilliant images. No matter how demanding the subject, perspectives, colors, and lighting situations are reproduced perfectly - over the entire full-frame image field.

    ZEISS 25mm f/2.0 reviews

    Distagon T* 25mm f/2.0 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F Mount is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Lens to Love This lens is sharp and captures incredible detail, especially in the near and middle distances. Color and contrast are wonderful and the files straight from the camera are the best. There is some vignetting wide open but I have not found that to be an issue. A very compact design that has a nice heft, it balances well on my D610. I did have some concerns when I selected this lens since my eyesight is not as good as it once was. Not to worry, when your subject comes into focus you know it. The smooth heavy focus throw it is wonderful to work with, it makes you an integral part of the picture taking process. No lens is perfect, but this one is among the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent fast wideangle If you can live without autofocus, the 25mm/2 Distagon is one of the best wideangles ever made. It has very well corrected lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberrations, high resolution and contrast, and superb all metal build quality. Overall the optical quality is the best of the 24mm-25mm SLR lenses I have used. Unlike the Nikkor 24mm/2, the Distagon 25mm/2 is quite easily manually focused, probably due to better aberration correction at f/2. It does have mild field curvature, with the focus being not a plane but a spherical section arcing slightly toward the camera away from the center of the frame. This means if the center is focussed at a certain distance, the edges and corners will be focused a bit short of the center's focus point. While this may be a disadvantage for some subjects, like flat walls, its an advantage for landscapes with foreground close to the camera and distant objects closer to the center of the frame, which will be rendered better with the 25mm/2 than with a flatfield lens. This is particularly helpful with vertically framed landscapes, emulating the Scheimpflug effect of a tilted lens. The curvature also becomes less as the 25mm/2 is stopped down, so it's barely noticeable at f/8 and f/11. The included bayonet mounting lens hood is terrific, but the front lens cap is fiddly, and has the tendency to pop off if it's not perfectly placed. You may want to replace it with a Nikon or Sony 67mm cap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible piece of glass! Although is a little heavier than what I expected it is an amazing piece of glass. When properly focus sharpness is incredible across the frame. A little too much vignettiing for my taste but easy to fix in post. A keeper for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Optices After being spoiled with auto focus, it takes awhile to get used to focusing with a manual focus lens agian, but the efforts are well worth it. This lens is smooth and crisp with superb tonality and microcontrast. I doubt I will ever purchase other than Zeiss optics again for my Nikons.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Of My Three Lenses in 24/25mm Range This is my third lens in the 24/25 range and definitely the best. One nice feature is the aperture ring. I can use it on both my FM2 and D800. Center sharpness is outstanding. Chromatic aberration is well controlled and this alone makes it my best lens in this focal range. The only weakness is the corners are a little soft but better than most lenses in this range on my D800.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect match for 24MP & 36MP FX Sensors Prior to acquiring my Zeiss 100mm f/2 ZF.2 I had yet to find a lens that could match the resolving power of my Nikon D800 FX sensor and based on that experience I decided to field test the Zeiss 25mm f/2 ZF.2 to see if it would provide similar results and the short answer is, yes it does. The 25mm Zeiss renders excellent color, contrast and sharpness with virtually no distortion or color aberrations that have any field relevance. The build quality is outstanding and the focus ring is precise in a way my Nikon lenses are not. The Zeiss 25mm is picture sharp across the frame, even wide open. Brokeh is pleasing and the shutter design produces very nice stars when shooting into the sun or moon with little to no flare which is not the case with my Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8. The manual focus design is actually a blessing in disguise since the ZF.2 lenses have a 'hard stop' Infinity focus setting so you can be confident that your focus is really at Infinity. No more frustration with sloppy focus rings on my Nikon lenses. This really helps on Aerial Photography projects and allows me to concentrate on capturing the moment without having to constantly worry about focus on every individual image. As I mentioned in my Zeiss 100mm lens review, the D800 FX sensor requires that the photographer use proper technique and to realize the resolution potential of the 36MP FX sensor you need to put good glass in front of it and IMHO the Zeiss ZF.2 series lenses are that glass.
