    Seagate STAE121 Reviews

GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wicked fast but a bit quirky The Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter (STAE121) is the most cost-effective product on the market for adding an external drive to your Mac via Thunderbolt. It works well (and fast!) with a few issues. You DO need Apple's Thunderbolt cable which is another $50. I have tried this adapter with a 1TB Seagate GoFlex 2 1/2 drive and a Crucial m4 SSD 2.5 drive. One nice feature is that you can physically attach a bare 2.5 drive to the SATA connector that is exposed on the Seagate adapter One issue I had was attaching the thunderbolt cable to the adapter. It *seems* to connect snugly with a solid click BUT sometimes just moving the drive or touching the cable causes the drive to disconnect - with an OS error :( If you disconnect and connect several times and are very careful with alignment, eventually the cable is well mated and the adapter & drive work fine - even when bumped or moved. Another issue I had was the drive not waking from sleep on occasion. I use Time Machine to backup to the drive and found the drive unresponsive on several occasions after the drive had spun-down. I changed my System Preferences to never let the drive sleep and have had no problems since. The speed of the adapter & external drive is fantastic - especially with an SSD drive! I ran some benchmarks with the Seagate GoFlex 1TB 2.5 drive and a Crucial m4 SSD 2.5 drive (64GB). Performance results with both Black Magic drive test and XBench test: Seagate GoFlex 1TB R/W BM: 77 MB/s -- 78 MB/s XB: 73 MB/s -- 67 MB/s Crucial m4 SSD 2.5 R/W BM: 377 MB/s -- 105 MB/s XB: 259 MB/s -- 98 MB/s So, I give this product 4 stars as it is wicked fast but took a while to determine the right system configuration and best cable connection method.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is what you need for speed!! I have plenty of Seagate GoFlex external harddrives which are connected to the Firewire 800 Adapter. I used these primarily as an external scratch disk for my video editing software. However I have not been able to find any affordable product in the market that would support the Thunderbolt feature on my iMac. The Pegasus is extremely expensive (can't find any value in here), the next best option was the Lacie, which was half the price of the Pegasus but reviews mentioned about the extremely loud fan noise for the case, so that was out of the window. Then I found this, a simple Thunderbolt adaptor that fits straight onto your existing Seagate GoFlex harddrive. This is godsend to be honest, it cost less (if you buy with the GoFlex hdd) than half the price of the Lacie. Now I can enjoy the speed of Thunderbolt without spending a lot of money. If you have Apple laptop or iMac that supports Thunderbolt and need a fast external drive, this is your best option at the moment. The only downfall (no big deal for me though), is the lack of additional Thunderbolt port for the daisy chain setup. My iMac has 2 Thunderbolt ports, so I can always use the other one if I have to.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quality Control??? Adapter worked well - for about 10 minutes! It failed and appeared to be overloading the power supply on my MacBook Air. I returned it and, knowing that this is a version 1.0 product from Seagate, decided not to risk trying it again. Instead I have purchased a fast Network Attached Storage (NAS) by Synology.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact and Very Fast Upgrading from a good Dell system to a MacBookPro (Retina) with two Thunderbolt ports. Bought this to convert an existing Mobile USB2 FeeAgent drive to Thunderbolt. Installed in minutes. Speed is truly impressive. Only shortcoming is that it doesn't come with a short (3 foot or less) Thunderbolt cable for traveling. Only T'bolt cables from this vendor are 6.6 - too long for mobile use. Runs in daisy-chain with companion 3TB GoFlex disk purchased with adapter, and a T'bolt adapter for a pre-existing 3TB GoFlex Desk drive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Blazing fast! I use it on my MBA 13, and I gotta say it works amazingly fast. Although it won't tell me my transfer rate like Windows would otherwise show, it can transfer my stuff from my hard drive to my external GoFlex (60GB worth of data, mostly movies) in just 30 mins. However, I wouldn't recommend using this baby with Time Machine and watching movies at once, somehow the Time Machine robs up all speed and your movie gets choppy while it backs up, otherwise for dowloading and data transfers, it pays itself in no time, literally.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding performance I recently replaced my Mac Pro by a Mac mini with a solid state drive and was totally blown away by how fast and completely silent it is for the price. I was antsy about paying for a Pegasus or LaCie external thunderbolt drive and this has been a great alternative: its barely noticeable when the disk spins up and takes around 10 seconds to transfer 1 GB - perhaps not 10 GB per second but still way faster than I'm used to and music and film editing software run without hiccup. Only real con is it can't be chained.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SSD Adapter for BMC Camera on Macbook I bought this as my SSD adapter for my macbook pro 2012 with Blackmagic design Cinema Camera. I have tested Sandisk and Kingston SSDs. Getting 360MB/s R/W with BM Disk tester. Works well.
