Pentax WG-2 Overview

  • 1Description

The Pentax Optio WG-2 Digital Camera Red is the company's 13th generation of the "rugged", life-proof camera line. You don't have to be an extreme adventure enthusiast to appreciate the features of the WG-2 though. These include the fact that the camera is waterproof down to 40', it can survive a drop of up to 5', it is crushproof to 220 lbf (pound-force), it's coldproof down to 14°F, and that it's dustproof. Phew! That's a lot of safety built-into one little point-and-shoot.

More than being a tough camera that can stand up to intentional or unintentional abuses, the Optio WG-2 is also one great image-maker. You of course want to come away from your adventures with awesome photos. The Optio has a number of respectable specs in that department, to help you capture the decisive moment with clarity, and ease. The backlit 16MP CMOS sensor provides high-res stills and full HD 1080p video at 30 fps. A wide-angle 5x internal optical zoom lens with a 28-140mm (35mm equivalent) focal length lets you capture subjects near and far, and features like image stabilization help to do so as well. Additional tools for impressive image-capture include the generous 3.0" LCD display, the ring of 6 LED lights on the lens for even lighting of macro shots, a built-in flash, and a bevy of auto shooting modes.

Pentax WG-2 Reviews

Optio WG-2 Digital Camera (Red) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this camera I have been a fan of Pentax since 1994 when I purchased my first film camera and then graduated to their digital cameras. Although I don't intend to do underwater shooting (even though I am an occasional snorkeler), I travel a lot and need a waterproof camera because it always seems to be raining where ever I go. Last July I purchased the Optio WG-1 which unfortunately turned out to be a disappointment, especially for indoor photos in museums, which were coming out too dark and not sharp enough compared to my previous, non-waterproof Pentax, the now obsolete Optio S55. Thus exactly 10 months after date of purchase, I traded the WG-1 in for the brand new Pentax Optio WG-2, which is a significant improvement. The new image sensor is much better for indoor and night shootings than the previous model. I used the WG-2 on a recent tour to Romania from May 16-24 with the primary purpose of visiting sites of Jewish heritage. My new camera took such amazing pictures of synagogue interiors that I think it must be ... Jewish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and Rugged I use a Pentax Kx for most everything but as I was going on vacation to Belize in the fall, I wanted something more portable and that could take a beating. Considering how happy I was with my Kx, I figured I'd give Pentax another shot. I'm extremely glad I did. The camera performed beautifully. Whether I was climbing Mayan temples, cave tubing or hiking through the rain forest, I got beautiful pictures. It got dropped a bunch of times and spent a lot of time in the water and handled it like a champ. It is a point and shoot so image quality isn't quite a great as my DSLR but then again, I wouldn't take my DSLR rock climbing. I highly recommend this camera. Great job Pentax!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pentax Optio WG-2 Pretty good camera for the price. Some things I liked: Startup time is lightning fast. The camera feels very solid, and durable. The build quality is great. The menu system is self-explanatory and easy to navigate. The Video and Photo quality and size options are great. The ISO ranges are good. Some things I didn't like: The battery life for video is not the greatest. The tripod mount is not in the center, it's located over to one side, throwing off balance. The video quality could be better. Overall I'm happy with the purchase, the camera was fairly inexpensive, provided good options, and it's fantastic for outdoor use (as it should be). If you plan to buy this camera to use for outdoor filming (video) - you might want to spring for an extra battery or two.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent rugged point and shoot I was tired of hauling around a Canon 60d when out adventuring in Colorado, so I picked up this camera to fill that void. Of course it's not going to take pictures as well as an SLR, but as for a point and shoot that's rugged it's great! I've had it up snowboarding a couple times, also took some video on the motorcycle. Autofocus isn't as quick as I'd like, but I haven't owned a point and shoot for quite a while so maybe that's normal. It's rugged, gets lots of comments, and the caribeener strap is ingenius. Makes it easy to clip it to a backpack, belt loop, anything really. It's already survived snow, couple shots in the fish tank, fall down a rock, tripod in the road, and it just keeps impressing me. I'm glad I picked this over the GoPro I was thinking of as it will work better for all the hiking/biking/motorcycling/snowboarding/(adventuring) that I do. Pictures have been a little fuzzy when zoomed in 5x and following someone snowboarding, but that's to be expected. High speed shots are fun (smaller MP) and I'm still tinkering with what can make those come out better. The battery is also relatively short, but again maybe I'm just used to going through 1000 shots on my 60d before needing to charge it. Overall I'm very pleased and an excellent choice for a rugged camera!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite camera Microscope mode is just incredible. Night still handheld is also just great. Love the look and feel. Love the pictures. Slo motion and time lapse also really great. Just a fun and smart camera that can do just about everything except 3d.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disapointed quality image Took it for a sunny day at sea kayaking. Photos are poor color and quality. In video mode it reduced 25% the screen, so dont record anything less than 3 meters away. Video of fast moving persons is all blurred. Then tested it indoors and the quality of photos is really bad. Also when finishes recording it takes time to give back control. The only reason for 2 stars are the macro feature (which takes some work to get into focus), the time lapse and the number of setting to shoot, otherwise it would be 1 stars. I compared the quality of the images and video agaist Nidon AW100 (fogs visor), Sony TX10 (useless and anoying touch screen) and Gopro (no visor and more expensive), all better than the Pentax wg2. Going to return to the shop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great outdoors camera for the amateur I snowshoe and backpack. The camera is shockproof, waterproof, coldproof, and crushproof. The perfect camera for bashing against the rocks or taking out in the snow. It is easy to do panorama shoot, self portraits, time-lapse movies, and extreme close-up of wild flowers. I finally have a camera that will survive my abuse and very easy to use for any amateur like me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rough and Ready We are going on a river rafting/hiking trip and was afriad to bring my Nikon D300. Thi scamera is the perfect choice. The wide angle is great for panoramics and the waterproof/rugged feature with 16 mp resolution make this a perfect choice at a perfact price. And full 1080p video what a bonus. Microscope feature with LEDS is a fun feature.
