Olympus E-M5 Overview

The black Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a compact, ergonomically-designed camera featuring a 16.1MP Live MOS sensor and TruePic VI image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080i/60 video with notable low-light quality and high-speed performance. The combination of these two technologies enables a high sensitivity range from ISO 200-25600 and continuous shooting up to 9 fps. The sensor also lends itself to an enhanced FAST autofocus system that utilizes a 35-area contrast-detection focusing method to efficiently acquire focus with selectable focus targets for even greater precision. Also benefitting image sharpness is in-body 5-axis image stabilization that compensates for angular shifts, yaw, pitch, and rolling camera shake.

Both a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and tilting touchscreen monitor are available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation. The EVF features a 1.44m-dot resolution and 1.15x magnification for comfortable eye-level viewing with the ability to preview image effects in real-time. Alternatively, the 3.0" 610k-dot tilting touchscreen OLED monitor suits working from high and low angles and its touchscreen design provides an intuitive means for controlling settings and navigating through the menu system. Complementing the entire feature-set, the E-M5 also sports a magnesium and aluminum alloy body construction with dust- and splash-protection to suit working in inclement conditions.

Included with the camera body is the M.ZUIKO Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R standard zoom lens, which provides a 28-84mm equivalent focal length range. It features quiet autofocus and zooming operation to benefit recording movies and also incorporates three aspherical elements to reduce aberrations and produce high image sharpness and clarity.

16.1MP Live MOS Sensor and TruePic VI Image Processor
The 16.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic VI image processor work in concert to enable high-resolution still imagery, full HD video recording, and notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 25600. The combination of these two technologies also helps to promote high-speed performance throughout the camera system, including a top shutter speed of 1/4000 sec., a continuous shooting rate up to 9 fps in H modes, and continuous 3.5 and 4.2 fps rates in L mode.

Additionally, full HD 1080i movie recording is supported at 60 fps with stereo sound in the MOV format.
In-Camera 5-Axis Image Stabilization
In-body image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake with any lens in use and compensates for camera movements up to the equivalent of five shutter speed steps. Furthermore, this unique image stabilization system works across five axes and compensates for vertical angle rotation, horizontal angle rotation, horizontal shift, vertical shift, and rolling camera shake movements. This range of detected movements serves to benefit traditional still image shooting as well as movie recording and working with moving subjects more effectively.
Electronic Viewfinder and 3.0" Tilting Touchscreen
For eye-level viewing, a bright 1.44m-dot electronic viewfinder is integrated into the design and features 1.15x magnification for realistic, high-resolution viewing in a comfortable position that is especially beneficial when working in bright conditions.

In addition to the viewfinder, a large 3.0" 610k-dot tilting touchscreen OLED monitor is also available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation. The monitor's tilting design is well-suited to use from both high and low angles and the intuitive touchscreen control offers a range of additional functionality, including the ability to touch to release the shutter, select the focusing point, magnify the image, apply filter effects, and navigate through images and settings.
FAST Autofocus System
Benefitting the quickened shooting performance of the E-M5, a contrast-detection focusing method employs 35 AF areas to quickly and accurately acquire focus. Aptly named, FAST (Frequency Acceleration Sensor Technology) is able to home in on subjects using single-shot or continuous focusing methods, as well as AF tracking to benefit working with moving subjects.
M.ZUIKO Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R Lens
Included with the E-M5 is the versatile M.ZUIKO Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R zoom lens, which provides a 28-84mm equivalent focal length range. Three aspherical elements have been incorporated into the lens' design to help reduce chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range and also contribute to high image sharpness and clarity. The lens is designated as MSC (Movie & Still Compatible), making it ideal for video recording due to its quick and near-silent focusing performance.

There is a HDMI and a multi connector for audio/video but no mic input. You would have to use the built in mic.

question

Can my old lenses from my OM-10 be used with this body?
Asked by: Anonymous
The MkII lenses focus pretty good with this camera but the first version lenses are very slow to focus. The OMD M- E1 works very well for this.

question

How long is the battery life?
Asked by: Kris
350 - 400 photos is what I'm averaging on my M5s. Less if you use the included external flash. There are some good off market batteries available in the $10 range. I would recommend picking a couple up and check to make sure they are compatible with the Olympus charger because some are not.
