Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a popular and versatile range of focal lengths, the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is a Canon L-series zoom commonly thought of as the workhorse of lenses. Ranging from wide-angle to portrait length, this lens is also distinguished by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions and to afford greater control over depth of field. The lens is also characterized by its sophisticated optical design, which includes one Super UD element and two UD elements, which reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to realize a high degree of color accuracy and clarity. Three aspherical elements are also featured, and minimize distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness. Additionally, a Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to control flare and ghosting for high contrast and neutral color fidelity.

Balancing the refined optics, this 24-70mm f/2.8 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 38.4-112mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
One Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Zoom lock lever secures the zoom position at the wide end to maintain a compact form factor and protect the lens when not in use.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Reviews

WoW! What a Wonderful Lens!

'I was quite disappointed when my original Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM croaked unexpectedly. And although it took me a couple of years to really appreciate this lens, it has since become my favorite go to lens especially when I do test photoshoots requiring multiple focal lengths for differing perspectives - 24mm, 35mm, 50mm & 70mm. So when it croaked - I was sad, I took a deep breathe, I jumped onto my bookmarked B&H Photo website & ordered my new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. Within two days (all the way out here in California), I had my new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens. I put it through its paces on my 5D Mark IV & was immediately grinning from ear to ear. As the sun was setting quite fast, my initial shots were in low light. I was impressed w/how quickly & accurately the auto focus performed. I was also pleasantly surprised w/ the sharpness of these impromptu shots. The next morning I did a quick walkabout around the neighborhood & took a few random shots. As anticipated, the auto focus performed efficiently & very well in daylight. Upon returning home, I wrote some notes down in my photography journal. I commented on how solid the build was yet discretely lighter than my old 24-70mm lens. I also noticed the new lens was slightly less than half an inch shorter. The biggest thing I was impressed with was the standard zoom out direction from 24mm to 70mm - my old lens zoom out direction was reversed from 70mm to 24mm. And although the filter size is 82mm (instead of the usual 77mm), I am convinced the larger optics lends itself to its excellent performance. I have already done several test photoshoots up & down Hwy 111 of several vintage iconic signs & buildings. I have only uploaded them onto my external hard drive hopper for review. However, my initial cursory reaction was - WoW! I can't wait to get hopping when it starts warming up! So, my overall impression of the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens so far - although I am still grieving over the loss of my old lens, I know this new lens will be my new fav field lens for test shots. In fact, maybe I will steam line my process & eliminate the step to do final shots w/my prime lenses! Thanks B&H for yet another excellent shopping experience!

Great everyday lens

Great everyday lens. I bought this to replace my original lens (Mark I) with this second generation version when a problem developed on the original lens after 20 years and thousands of shots. The second generation appears to be as sharp and a little bit lighter (which is nice).

Bought this to replace Canon 24-70mm f2.8L Ver 1. Head and shoulders above older lens, which I used a LOT. It was my go to lens 80% of the time. Never disappointed me until it quit. However, the new version is so much better. Shots seem to be sharper and the overall performance is improved. I haven't had time to do a lot of testing on the lens, but have shot a lot of pictures with it and am not at all sorry I bought it.

I ordered two of these. The first was rated a 9 and it arrived with a scratch on front of the glass. The second one was rated a 9,and it had several scratches on the front glass, and the lens hood was missing.

I have a way of telling myself nothing new unless I use everything I old. I have an canon 70D, 6D, & also a 7D. I love all of them. I had. Them for some years now & haven't upgraded. Honestly stop being serious about it. But I tried to video my son basketball game & the lights was terrible. Hopefully it' helps so far I have gave it a test run & I love it. Of course the pictures are more sharp for me

I needed this lens as quickly as possible, everywhere else there was a wait time or came with a hefty price for shipping. B&H allowed me to order it and have same time day pick in as little as an hour! The staff within the store was super helpful and made sure everything was correct and I was leaving with the right product. Amazing company that offers really good prices and products. This company really cares about their equipment and customers. My product came wrapped up and in really good condition I did not have a problem with anything. I Highly recommend going here because of their staff and their amazing products!

question

I'm doing event photography and mostly shoot large group shots. I have read and heard so many good reviews on this lens and i'm really tempted to make a purchase, but my question would be if i really need the F2.8 since i won't be able to use such a shallow DOF apart from taking portraits. Another question would be if shooting hand held under low light conditions using a relatively lower shutter speed(1/60-1/100) will my pictures start to show camera shake due to the lack of Canon's Image Stabilisation feature?
Asked by: Gates L.
The lens is superb. I also had the prior version and the MKII is noticeably better. I don't shoot at f/2.8 very often myself but I consider it a necessity in any event to sometimes isolate a subject from the background. I used to shoot at f/2.8 hand held on my 70-200mm first generation with stabilization for night football. I was shooting with a 7D at ISO 6400, With a little noise reduction in Lightroom, I got files suitable for printing in our local, weekly newspaper. I now shoot a 5D MKIII and I love the results that I get with the 24-70 MKIIYou seem to know the normal rule for camera shake. The rule of thumb is a shutter speed of 1/focal length or faster. In other words at 70mm you need 1/70 or faster. At 24mm you need 1/24 or faster. That is with a full frame camera. If you have a crop body use the effective focal length. I also don't hand hold very often, I shoot principally landscape and nature off a tripod. The lens is big and heavy. I think Canon did not want to make it heavier with stabilization. I don't know anything about the EF 24-70 f/4L. That may be an option if you don't need the extra stop.
