Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a popular and versatile range of focal lengths, the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is a Canon L-series zoom commonly thought of as the workhorse of lenses. Ranging from wide-angle to portrait length, this lens is also distinguished by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions and to afford greater control over depth of field. The lens is also characterized by its sophisticated optical design, which includes one Super UD element and two UD elements, which reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to realize a high degree of color accuracy and clarity. Three aspherical elements are also featured, and minimize distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness. Additionally, a Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to control flare and ghosting for high contrast and neutral color fidelity.

Balancing the refined optics, this 24-70mm f/2.8 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 38.4-112mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
One Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Zoom lock lever secures the zoom position at the wide end to maintain a compact form factor and protect the lens when not in use.

It's a very convenient lens. Even though it's a heavy one, it's really versatile and useful for weddings and portraits.

My original first gen version of this lens finally crashed and burned. I had to have the 24-70 in my kit so I purchased the last gen made og this lens in EF mount. I await the next 1-Series release before moving to RF sooooo. This lens is fast and focus is tack sharp. Caveat- can not interchange the lens cap nor the lens hood from prior version - bummer!

'I was quite disappointed when my original Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM croaked unexpectedly. And although it took me a couple of years to really appreciate this lens, it has since become my favorite go to lens especially when I do test photoshoots requiring multiple focal lengths for differing perspectives - 24mm, 35mm, 50mm & 70mm. So when it croaked - I was sad, I took a deep breathe, I jumped onto my bookmarked B&H Photo website & ordered my new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. Within two days (all the way out here in California), I had my new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens. I put it through its paces on my 5D Mark IV & was immediately grinning from ear to ear. As the sun was setting quite fast, my initial shots were in low light. I was impressed w/how quickly & accurately the auto focus performed. I was also pleasantly surprised w/ the sharpness of these impromptu shots. The next morning I did a quick walkabout around the neighborhood & took a few random shots. As anticipated, the auto focus performed efficiently & very well in daylight. Upon returning home, I wrote some notes down in my photography journal. I commented on how solid the build was yet discretely lighter than my old 24-70mm lens. I also noticed the new lens was slightly less than half an inch shorter. The biggest thing I was impressed with was the standard zoom out direction from 24mm to 70mm - my old lens zoom out direction was reversed from 70mm to 24mm. And although the filter size is 82mm (instead of the usual 77mm), I am convinced the larger optics lends itself to its excellent performance. I have already done several test photoshoots up & down Hwy 111 of several vintage iconic signs & buildings. I have only uploaded them onto my external hard drive hopper for review. However, my initial cursory reaction was - WoW! I can't wait to get hopping when it starts warming up! So, my overall impression of the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens so far - although I am still grieving over the loss of my old lens, I know this new lens will be my new fav field lens for test shots. In fact, maybe I will steam line my process & eliminate the step to do final shots w/my prime lenses! Thanks B&H for yet another excellent shopping experience!

I needed this lens as quickly as possible, everywhere else there was a wait time or came with a hefty price for shipping. B&H allowed me to order it and have same time day pick in as little as an hour! The staff within the store was super helpful and made sure everything was correct and I was leaving with the right product. Amazing company that offers really good prices and products. This company really cares about their equipment and customers. My product came wrapped up and in really good condition I did not have a problem with anything. I Highly recommend going here because of their staff and their amazing products!

Super sharp EF lens on Canon R5

The EF Canon 24-60 2.8 Mk II lens is a very sharp lens with excellent contrast and is reasonably fast. I've tried the RF version but frankly dis not see enough improvement to justify a change. The In body stabilization in the R5 works wonders with this lens. I did have a Tamron 24-70 with stabilization before buying this Canon. For whatever reason, the Tamron's stabilization did not work properly for me on the R5. Also the Tamron had a different color balance compared to my other Canon lenses. If you have both DSLR bodies and R bodies like the R5 or R6, this is a superb all around lens.

question

I'm doing event photography and mostly shoot large group shots. I have read and heard so many good reviews on this lens and i'm really tempted to make a purchase, but my question would be if i really need the F2.8 since i won't be able to use such a shallow DOF apart from taking portraits. Another question would be if shooting hand held under low light conditions using a relatively lower shutter speed(1/60-1/100) will my pictures start to show camera shake due to the lack of Canon's Image Stabilisation feature?
Asked by: Gates L.
This would be an excellent lens for the applications you wish to use it for.
