Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Overview

A practical and versatile prime, the EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens from Canon pairs the wide-angle focal length with sophisticated autofocus capabilities as well as image stabilization. The optical design utilizes one aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. Wide-angle 28mm f/2.8 lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 44.8mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also permits working with shallow depth of field techniques.
One aspherical element helps to suppress spherical aberrations and distortion for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Sharp and fast

This is the sharpest lens I have ever owned, not just from Canon but also compared to other prime lenses from Pentax, Nikon, and Fuji. It focuses fast too but that's expected of a wide angle lens. It fits perfectly when you cradle the camera in your left hand unlike many flimsy zoom lenses that feel like there are a million small plastic parts about to break at any moment. The image stabilization works well, keeps you out of trouble down to about 1/8 second, very handy for indoor shots or after sunset shots.

May Be The Best Lens I Have

I was a little concerned about the lens being only f2.8, but this lens is nothing short of fabulous. Beautiful color, sharp as a scalpel, IS, and able to capture it all indoors, as well as out. This is the prime I've been looking for, and has taken first place in my kit from my 35mm f2.0.

Great lens for the money.

I'm very pleasantly surprised with this lens. Produces beautiful colors, crisp images and a shallow DOF I would expect from a faster lens. I wanted this lens for street shooting and I'm very happy I went with this one. I'm using this on my 5D Mk2 and so far am very happy with it. My favorite lens had been my 50mm f/1.4 L prime but I think I'm beginning to favor this one.

I bought this lens to use with a Sony a7R II and a Canon 5D Mark III. It works great for both cameras! It's especially nice to use with the Sony mirrorless on a gimbal.

I have had this lens about a year. It is very light, yet produces clear, crisp images. I use on both my 5D III and on 7D II where it functions as a normal lens. The f/2.8 + IS makes it great for low light situations. It's great for street photography, also for landscapes. I use it more than my L lenses.

High quality versatile lens

Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM - For the past 20 years I have been using the Canon EF 28-105 as my primary moderate wide angle lens. While this zoom is a great lens I was in need of something a little faster. I spent a great deal of time considering all my options, reading reviews and assessing what I was going to use the lens for and the quality of the optics I wanted. My selection of an upgrade to my zoom was the Canon EF 28mm f2.8 IS USM. This lens has been absolutely phenomenal! This wide angle lens is fast, optically sharp and light weight. The Image Stabilization has increased its versatility and has made it great for evening and indoor photography without flash. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War I took a tour of several battlefields and museums in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. I matched the EF 28mm f2.8m IS with my Canon EF 70-300mm IS DO zoom lens for a fast versatile and light weight kit. The EF 28mm f2.8 IS was great for landscapes, monuments and late evening shots on the battlefields. The Image stabilization came in handy shooting inside buildings, historic displays and late night pictures in the Gettysburg National Park. While it might lack an L-series designation the Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM provides a quality build, fast and quiet Auto-focusing, image stabilization, excellent optics, image sharpness and an f2.8 lens speed w/ IS. This lens has been great for travel, reenactments, interior shooting, architectural and general photography. After more than a year of use I know I made the right decision! I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a fast, versatile and high quality wide angle lens.

question

Will this work on rebel t6s?
Asked by: Mike
Yes, and it's a very nice lens for a cop sensor Canon, though if I had it to do over I might go with the 24mm, 2.8, which is a few bucks more. The wife and I went to Europe last year and I used the 28mm for inside photos where flash was not allowed. My walk around lens is the Canon 15-85mm, 3.5-5.6 which is worth every penny. When on foot this two lenses proved to be very useful and are very nice lenses. the 28mm is very sharp with nice colors. The 24 is supposed to be a tad less sharp but not by much.

question

Hi there! Is this lens compatible with a canon 20d?
Asked by: Anonymous
I love this lens. I've used it mostly for landscape photos with my Canon 6D (full frame). I looked online and found this quote..... It's a moderate wide angle on film and full-frame cameras like my Canon 5D, a normal lens on 1.6x cameras like the Rebel and 30D, and a wide-normal on 1.3x cameras like the Canon 1D Mk III. It appears that this lens is compatible with any Canon camera.
