Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Tamron's SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras delivers a very useful range from 24mm true wide-angle to 70mm short telephoto, useful for landscapes, interiors, portraits, street photography and much more. The continuous maximum aperture of f/2.8 combined with built-in Vibration Compensation image stabilization make it possible to achieve stellar results in low-light situations, while the Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) gives you very quiet autofocus capabilities that are ideal for shooting video.

The 24-70mm lens uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, for excellent image quality. Using a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, the lens delivers fine bokeh--the out-of-focus area in a photo. Moisture-resistant construction helps protect the lens from any water that comes near it. And all of this is in a compact (3.5 x 4.6"), lightweight (29.1 oz) package that won't wear you out, even carrying it all day.

High-Speed Standard Zoom With Built-In VC (Vibration Compensation)

World's first full-size, high-speed standard zoom with built-in VC (Vibration Compensation). Even when shooting in low-light conditions with a slow shutter speed to render sharpness, Tamron's acclaimed VC allows for stable handheld camera work, to more fully enjoy the benefits of this high-speed zoom lens.
Uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, delivering top-of-the-class quality images suited to this high-grade lens. Using a rounded diaphragm, the lens achieves gorgeous blur effects.
Features USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) to power a speedy AF drive together with a continuous manual mechanism.
This high-speed standard zoom lens has a wide-end focal length of 24mm that expands the photographic area.
The lens adopts the new technology including the latest optical design, VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), all in a lighter and more compact package.
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent water from penetrating the lens.

VC (Vibration Compensation)

VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.

New VC System (Moving Coil Method)

Tamron's original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens's overall light weight and compact size. Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the Ultrasonic Motor

In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

    Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 reviews

SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 231.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from great lens great value better than canon I've bought this lens to replace my Canon 24-70. And I'm really happy with the lens. Its sharpness and contrast are very similar to canons. Its USD focus speed is very fast, but little slow in dark environment. The no.1 aspect of this lens is its VC. With it on I can handhold and get sharp pictures at very low shutter speed which has opened new door to my photography. Only minor thing is its vignetting when shot wide open. Its little stronger than canons however its very easily fixable in the post. Oh and last thing is its lighter than canons so its better for me as a wedding photographer because I have to carry it for approximately 10 hrs

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stop look & listen This is a fantastic lens & I'm generally a canon L lens type of guy. That been said I believe in using the best tool that gets the job done. I was so impressed with this lens that I sold my 24-105 f4 L, as this lens is so much better. Its so much lighter than the canon 24-70mm f2.8 L & it has VC. I shot a very low light church function & the VC & auto focus worked great. When I reviewed my images I was blown away by the color rendition & sharpness this lens captured. So If your a wedding or portrait photographer, or want an extremely versatile lens than this one rock hard ; )

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All in one lens perfection! I bought this after watching Dave Dugdale's comparission review of 24-70mm lenses (he is sponsored by B&H) I must say I could not be more pleased with my purchase, the picture is crystal clear and the very very tiny vingetting doesn't really matter to me because I use mine for 100% video. I've done a ton of video and have a couple L Lenses but they can't compare to this as far as image stabilization and fantastic focal legnth, I use 24 for wide angle shots, and 70 for my close up interview style. My only dislike is the front element sits barely inside the filter ring, GET a filter on this thing as soon as you buy it! (not a cheap one or you will regret it)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from now this is a lens !!! I use this lens for multiple purposes, having just bought it three days ago I already have shot with it f 11 with strobe in the studio and also wide open daylight for beauty .. the 2.8 end drop off for the out of focus is phenominal .. a very character making vision . I originally went to B and H to back order the Canon conterpart when they advised be to try this.. the leans is $1k less than Canon , its in stock.. and it has the added bonus of the image stabiliser.. I was shooting wide open at 1/6 of a second... pin sharp beauty, you could not have it any sharper !!!! Anthony Horth

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good I borrowed a co-worker's Canon 24-70 F/2.8L version 1 prior to buying this lens. This is much better. VC makes a huge difference when shooting low light. I've used it with a Canon 7D and Canon 5D MK3. Make sure you disable lens corrections on the 5D and it works great. I knew to do this at the start so don't know if some other people's problems are from not doing this, also in Lightroom 4 it sometimes wants to come in as a Sigma instead of the Tamron - set your correction profile to Default instead of auto and it picks the right one every time. It's been awesome as a macro lens too, I've been using it to shoot a lot of fish in aquariums using only ambient light. Considering it's half the price of the current Canon version (without stabilization), it's hard to beat it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some issues I had this lens for about 3 years now IIRC and used it with Canon 6D and 5d Mark III. It is a good lens, slightly slower to focus than the Canon version, but this one has image stabilization. I am concerned about durability as twice it got stuck at 60mm and would not zoom out more. First time it got fixed under warranty and second time, 5 months after the first time, same thing happened and they charged me for it though it was still under warranty. Tamron's warranty is way pickier than others IMHO. It is a bit soft as well. I am planning on selling and buying the Canon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really nice for videography with a single big caveat The 24-70mm zoom platform is amazing for documentary and live event videography and the vibration control helps out a bit on Canon cameras that lack IBS. The bokeh is nice and creamy and f/2.8 as well. However, if you're a videographer, particularly a Canon videographer, you're probably focusing manually, and this lens's zoom and focus are reversed from what pretty much every single other lens has trained you to expect. If you swap lenses a lot during a shoot, this is going to throw you off. However, the vibration control setting, image quality, and sweet price more than makes up for it in my opinion. Just know what you're getting yourself into!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tamron SP 24-70 f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens I have used this lens on a Canon 5D Mark II for Landscape, Portraits, and an Event (wedding). It's perfect. Image quality is great with no noticeable distortion at any focal length. The image stabilization is wonderful. The color and bokeh are fabulous. Other reviewers have noticed problems in light fall-off... to them I say get a life. If there is any, it's easily remedied with current photo processors. This lens is the best available, and great price, and it puts the Canon variant at a distinct disadvantage for most photography situations.
