The powerful AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II Lens from Nikon is a super telephoto zoom that delivers images with superior image quality. Effective for sports, wildlife, and aviation photography, this is very versatile super telephoto lens with a constant maximum aperture compatible with FX and DX format DSLRs. On DX format cameras it provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 300-600mm.

The lens features the innovative Vibration Reduction (VRII) system that allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. The VRII system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed approximately three shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible. The lens is built with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) which provides swift autofocusing with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation. And the lens can be switched quickly from AF to manual focus.

There are four switches conveniently positioned on the rear of the lens barrel used to engage different focusing modes. While autofocusing, the focus can be locked by engaging the AF-L switch; the AF-ON switch allows quick autofocusing on and off. When you engage the Memory Set switch you can focus on a subject and store the focused distance in the lens' memory; it stores the information even if the camera is turned off. By switching to Memory Recall the lens will automatically return to the stored focal length. For example, if you are shooting a baseball game you can pre-set the focus from the camera to second base, shoot action at another area of the field, then engage Memory Recall to quickly capture the action at second base without having to refocus.

This lens features a 20-elements/17-groups construction with Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat lens coating and four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens elements which help to yield color-corrected images with minimal distortion and aberrations. Wide zoom and focus rings enable comfortable lens control and an integrated, rotatable tripod foot is supported. With magnesium die-cast barrel construction, enhanced dust and moisture resistance and a protective meniscus front element, this lens can be confidently used in inclement weather.

AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great lens for my purpose. I need a long lens to shoot wildlife, birds etc, however as I have some disability as a result of a stroke, lenses of 500mm and bigger are physically unmanageable. Although bordering on too bulky for me, the 200-400mm zoom with a 1.7X converter fits the bill. With typical Nikon high quality definition, fast enough in all but really poor light and very effective VR. From my pespective, the best feature is the huge zoom range from 200mm on it's own to up to 650mm with converter (plus crop factor) means less lens carrying and changing with my fumbling hands and provides me with ample range when teamed with a D300. Very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb I put off buying a long lens for a year because I was not sure how much use it would get. I also debated between 200-40mm and the 400mm. I am no longer working and so it seemed the right time to buy this lens, before I waste my hard earned money on something less important, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are as good as steak. My first time using this lens produced stunning results; I thought it would be a challenge to get a sharp image; with good support, this lanes takes sharp images and every focal length. The zoom feature is great to have to fine tune the compositions. I have no intention of handholding this lens and I use the best support system available.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good option First of all, sorry for my English, its basic. I bought this lens in order to replace my lovely Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 HSM. At this days, I use it mounted in a Nikon D800, and I can note the following aspects: - Autofocus speed: its a bit fasther than the Sigma 120-300. - Sharpness: its in the same level of the Sigma, maybe a bit better. - Construction: its a beatifull lens, very strong, a great improve over the Sigma 120-300. Sumarizing, its a good option aggainst the fixed focal lens. Im not sure if the price difference betwen this lens and the Sigma 120-300 is justified. Is better than Sigma, but is not two times better... (USD 6500 vs USD 3500).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New favorite . . . Bought this lens for a trip to Africa to pair with my Nikon D5 for wildlife photography (my hobby now that retired). Fast and sharp is all I can say. Sure . . . some people think it's heavy, but I'm 57 and I hung the D5 with the 200-400mm on 1 leather crossbody strap and my other D5 with my 70-200mm on another crossbody strap and had my backpack on my back. We were traveling in land rovers . . . so tripods weren't possible. People can complain about hand holding this set up as heavy, but so worth it (plus a great workout for your arms). When i can, I pair it with my RRS titanium tall tripod (stretches to 6'2 without a middle support). Worth every single penny!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A useful lens - easy to like I really like this lens. It is sharp, has great contrast and color, and suits my shooting style better than the long primes Nikon offers. I use the lens primarily for birds and other wildlife in Florida and use those images to make 30X40 (and larger) prints to hang in my house. I am a retired professional shooting for myself and enjoying some of the equipment that I could never justify when I was working. I found my percentage of keepers went up when I replaced the tripod foot and added a long lens support system. The lens is heavy and difficult for me to hand-hold, but I knew that before buying. A gimbal head on a very good tripod makes this lens much easier to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely no regrets, great lens I recently purchased this lens for another option (longer range) to my 70-200 2.8. Man,,, this is pretty much the sharpest lens that I own!! Minimum focus distance even at 400mm is still really short, I believe 9 feet or so. I was skeptical about the f/4 but under daylight conditions or coupled with a high ISo camera like the D4, this lens is incredible. I'll use this lens for wildlife and sports. This lens is so versatile, that a portrait head and shoulders shot will be incredibly sharp also. I have no problem handholding it with the VR that works great. Only drawback is the weight, I just have to get used to picking it up by the lens and not the camera body, it'll probably damage your camera lens mount if you do so

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes it focuses with the TC 20 III I just wanted to update on the many old reviews here. With the D800 and the TC20 III, this lens focuses perfectly under any light condition. Furthermore, IQ with said converter is excellent thus making this lens a more than viable 800mm alternative. If even more magnification is desired simply crop the D800 to DX for an astounding 1200mm f8 with no reduction in IQ while still maintaining 16 mp. NICE!!!! Autofocus speed is similar with good lighting and slightly slower under dim conditions given the VR you can shoot handheld, indoors at speeds of 1/64 perfectly. The performance of this lens with the D800 is stellar even with the TC20. My guess the same would be true with the D4 since they share focusing systems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish I would have bought it sooner I have had this lens for a couple of weeks now.I think it is every bit as sharp as my 300/2.8 It is great for landscapes and works great at the zoo as well.I can hardly wait for the summer activities outdoor concerts, rodeos, baseball games and such. I know it will perform flawless on all occasions. Being from a town of about 700 people it really turns heads. I use it mostly on a monopod with a ball head and it balances real well. I would definitely recommend this lens to anyone looking for a super telephoto. Well worth the money.
