The Teradek Bond HD-SDI Broadcast Bundle is an ingenious little HD video transmission system that employs up to five USB cellular modems (not included) to send high-quality H.264 files over the Internet – from anywhere with cellular coverage and to anywhere with a high-speed Internet connection. The key to the system is the Bond device's ability to split an encoded H.264 stream into pieces, and the system's Adaptive Internet Streaming technology, which adjusts bit rates and buffering on the fly based on changing network conditions.
The HD-SDI Broadcast Bundle starts with the Cube 150 encoder, which has an HD-SDI input that accepts a compatible signal from your camcorder's output. The encoder sends the encoded H.264 video to the Bond device via USB. Bond works its magic in conjunction with the 3G/4G USB cellular modems that you've attached to the device like antennae. Even with all those elements combined, this is remains a low-power, lightweight system – Bond and the Cube 150 together weigh only 13 oz.
For broadcasters and freelance camera operators, this setup means that even with mediocre network coverage, delivery of a high-definition video stream is ensured. How do these cellular streams get recombined into a usable video signal? Teradek supplies Sputnik software, which can exist either on a Linux server or in a cloud computing environment, such as Amazon EC2 or Rackspace. Sputnik puts out an MPEG-TS stream that's compatible with most H.264 IP decoders, including the Cube 350 decoder that's included in this bundle. The Cube 350 has an Ethernet connection and an HD-SDI output to enable the signal's easy integration with your video system.
Alternatively, Sputnik can be set to send the recombined stream directly to Livestream or another web video streaming service, which presents a supremely simple way to live-stream a newsworthy event.
The Bond HD-SDI Broadcast Bundle also comes with 30 days of premium support from Teradek, as well as an MPEG-TS license. The support contract covers initial system integration, configuration, testing, and unlimited phone support for the 30-day period.
