Sony DSC-HX200V Overview

  • 1Description

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V Digital Camera puts 18.2Mp, 1080/60p video capture, and the grip and styling of a DSLR in the palm of your hand. Designed for the more active shooter with a need for a better grip than that of a traditional point-and-shoot, the HX200V goes the distance. It works hard to provide you with great looking images and the extensively functionality achieve them.

18.2Mp images just don't happen. An entire system has to come together to make it possible. The HX200V provides you with the tools needed, including Active 3-Way Optical Image Stabilization, a 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD TruBlack display, and a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T 30x optical zoom lens. The lens also utilizes a 60x Clear Image Zoom.

A number of auto modes come into play when shooting the HX200V as well. From GPS and Compass functionality for geo-tagging to iSCN for automatically adjusted camera settings, Sony gave the HX200V a host of features that take the guesswork out of shooting. Other highlights include 10 fps burst shooting, Background Defocus, and Anti-blink. And of course, no matter what you're shooting, the camera accepts Sony's Memory Stick Duo media as well as SD/SDHC and SDXC memory cards.

18.2 Megapixel Back-Illuminated Exmor R CMOS Image Sensor
The 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor captures ultra-high definition images that take full advantage of the camera's sharp Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens. The sensor enables advanced processing that reduces noise levels resulting in stunning low light images with incredible details
High Speed AF
To improve focusing speed and sensitivity, the Exmor R CMOS sensor uses its rapid throughput to deliver high-quality image signals to the camera's BIONZ processor. The result is fast, DSLR-like focusing speeds, even in low light
Optical Zoom Plus Clear Image Zoom
Most digital zooms use electronic cropping to get closer to the subject, resulting in unsharp images. With Clear Image Zoom the powerful processor compares patterns found in adjacent pixels and creates new pixels to match selected patterns, resulting in more realistic, higher-quality images. Clear Image Zoom doubles optical zoom for closer photos
Full HD 1080/60p
Record crystal clear movies at the highest resolution available with capabilities for 60p in 1080. This provides stunning, fast motion video with less distortion for playback on your HDTV. With dual record of stills and movies, you can shoot both at the same time
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization with 3-Way Active Mode
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization reduces shake and blur by countering camera movements in both horizontal and vertical directions. Active 3-Way stabilization adds digital rolling control that counters clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation, resulting in more stable videos even at long focal lengths
GPS and Compass
GPS and compass record location data and camera direction as you shoot movies and photos. GPS Log lets users track a photographic journey and later view the path and images on a map. Map View in "Play Memories Home" software, allows users to view images on a map showing where they were taken. The logged path and images can also be displayed on Google Earth
Capture the Decisive Moment with Up to 10 fps
Capture full 18.2 megapixel resolution images at up to 10 frames per second, helping to ensure that the decisive moment is captured such as the soccer ball flying into the goal. In addition, a mechanical shutter helps reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects
3D Still Image and 3D Sweep Panorama Mode
Produce awe-inspiring images with 3D still image and 3D Sweep Panorama capabilities. Photos will take on a new dimension of creative capabilities for viewing the world in a whole new way
Picture Effect for More Expressive Photos
Picture Effect adds a new level of expression to photos, making ordinary landscapes and portraits come to life by heightening mood and emphasizing certain attributes. Select camera models have up to nine different effects
Photo Creativity
Photo Creativity allows you to fine-tune your exposure settings, such as brightness, color, and vividness, and quickly choose the right enhancement for your subject. Now you can view Picture Effects and Photo Creativity effects in real time on the camera's monitor or in the viewfinder before shooting
Background Defocus
DSLR photographs are often beautiful because they blur the background, putting the emphasis on the subject. Now our point-and-shoot cameras can deliver this signature DSLR benefit. The system takes two shots, identifies the background and applies a defocused background keeping the subject crisp and clear
Intelligent Sweep Panorama HR Mode
With Intelligent Sweep Panorama HR mode just press the shutter, pan the landscape and let the camera do the rest. It automatically links together each frame to produce a high resolution panoramic image providing the ability to zoom in on small details. This model even detects faces and moving subjects to stitch intelligently different widths to help avoid subject distortion
Superior Auto Mode
Get cleaner, more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots. The camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode, then quickly shoots and combines up to six shots to produce images with greater clarity, optimum dynamic range using backlight correction HDR technology and lower image noise using 6 shots layering technology. Superior Auto intelligently detects 33 scenes for still images and movies, making it easy to get the best shot
Face Detection Technology
Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and adjusts focus, exposure, and white balance to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends
Smile Shutter Technology
Smile Shutter technology captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply press the Smile Shutter button and the camera does the rest. You can also select adult and child priority and indicate the degree of Smile Detection sensitivity. Intelligent Scene Recognition can now be used together with Smile Shutter™ mode when the Intelligent Auto mode is on. This means that beautiful smiles can be captured with settings optimized for the particular scene, even in difficult conditions such as twilight and backlighting
Anti-Blink Function
It's frustrating to capture the perfect shot, only to review it later and discover subjects blinked during the photo. The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot
Soft Skin Mode
Portrait subjects will love the results. Soft Skin mode recognizes skin tones and reduces the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles without affecting the rest of the shot
Intelligent Scene Recognition Mode
Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects 33 different types of scenes and selects the appropriate camera settings. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advanced Mode, the camera takes a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which to keep
Natural Flash
Conventional point-and-shoot camera flash shots just don't capture colors the way the eye sees them. Natural Flash controls the white balance of both the background and main subjects
Panorama Still Image Size
Sweep Panorama: HR (10,480 x 4,096) / Wide (7,152 x 1,080 / 4,912 x 1,920) / Standard (4,912 x 1,080 / 3,424 x 1,920)

    Sony DSC-HX200V Reviews

    Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V Digital Camera is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 88.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply the best action big zoom camera I take a lot of photos and videos of kitesurfers and this camera has the right size zoom, fast focus and great image stabilization that are all needed to get good shots when standing on a beach with twenty-five knot plus winds buffeting me. The image and video quality is truly astounding.Had a HX100V but it's computer went haywire after the camera was splashed on by a passing car driving through a puddle. The repair shop said that it was irreparable so that is why I am buying the HX200V. The camera really needs a way to prevent moisture and sand from getting in around the lens. However, I don't know of any camera that is better weatherproofed and this one outperforms the competition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera I bought this camera as an upgrade from previous point and shoot's, and wasn't sure if I wanted to go all in on a DSLR. I haven't had the camera for long, but so far it exceeds my expectations. It's easy to use for a neophyte like myself, including a lot of the special shooting styles. I still don't know a lot about shutter speeds and ISO so I haven't really tinkered with that yet. The quality of the pictures is great, and I've been impressed with the zoom and the ability to capture images of my kid's hockey games without any blur or image distortion. I'm looking forward to nicer weather to see how it works for nature pictures.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just in > so far Great pictures B&H's sale price couldn't be beat with a 'big stick'. :-) No other site could touch them for price/no tax/no shipping. Product received when promised. Would definitely buy from B&H again! Sony HX200V - just received and still trying to learn all the options. A quick summary. PRO - easy to use/understand - great pictures from Macro to distance - auto ev convenient to use - SteadyShot Image Stabilization REALLY works - body size just right, not too heavy or large - good quality 'zoom in' on stored pics Con - as stated in other reviews, the manual is lacking. The on-board one is helpful but hard to use because of screen size. Otional HTML manual avaialable at Sony is better than shipped manual but still doesn't give details. I would have paid extra for an optional DVD or 'Dummies Guide' for using all the options. Going on vaction soon, will submit updates if I have additional info.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A handy semi-pro Ok. You can watch the numbers on specifications (quite good, by the way), but let me tell you a little about the product experience when the HX200v is in your hands. Feels great to have a strong product and a light/portable camera at the same time. It has a great lens and a really accurate color fidelity. I'm very surprised positively about the battery life. Lasts way more than i thought a servo-assisted zoom camera would do. Feels great to hold it in my hands because of the perfect weight for a semi-pro camera, and also because of the grip material. Honestly i took so long searching and picking the best choice for my budged and now i'm really happy with this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Superzoom EVER! As good as a DSLR! I am a pro/am photographer, who has owned numerous cameras. At one time, if you ever told me that any camera other than Nikon would satisfy my needs, and be tops in image quality, I would have deemed that person insane! I also use a Nikon DSLR with several lenses, and have owned several super zooms. The super zooms were previously lacking in image quality, or aimed at an amateur market exclusively, due to lack of manual control, and poor overall design. I tried Lumix, Ninon, Canon and found all of the one lens cameras to be lacking in one way or another. This Sony Hx200V is in virtually every way the equal of my Nikon in image quality. I've read reviews of super zooms that indicate a lack of quality of image at extreme focal lengths. Do you have any idea how much a 800 or 1000 mm Nikon or Canon lens costs? Also, would you like to carry that around on a daily basis? My DSLR bag weighs 7 pounds with the body and multiple lenses. This gem from Sony weighs 1.2 pounds, and can go places optically that my SLR just can't reach, let alone do it with superb image quality. If I could, I would post images I took today , and I doubt you could tell the difference between the two. I use a 27 iMac with the best display in the industry, and find the Sony to be outstanding in every respect. In addition, it is intuitive to use, versatile, and has many manual options for advanced photographers. B and H was extremely professional, and shipped IMMEDIATELY. I cannot recommend them highly enough! BUY this superb camera, and give up on finding anything better--it does not exist!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony does super fine at super zoom This is my 3rd Sony (HX) super zoom camera and I am totally hooked. As an enthusiastic world traveler I am constantly on the road and the one thing I have learned through the years is that lighter is (almost) always better. Enter Sony's HX line. With a full 30x optical zoom and incredible color and clarity this camera does what the big boys do without the hassle of lugging a heavy weight camera and an assortment of lenses. If there is a down side it would be the less than stellar photos taken at full zoom in.low light Additionally the superb stabilization system allows me to shoot HD video like a pro. So if you are looking for a compact easy to use super zoom camera that produces spectacular photos without a lot (or any) tweaking this is definitely the camera for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First best camera I have ever seen ! This camera is the best in its class : - Quality pictures in low light conditions - ergonomic panorama pictures - The camera menu is very intuitive - Take quality video and shoot a picture the same time or extract your picture later while display a video - Camera is easy to use - Superior auto mode - Long distance flash - Big zoom with no image quality loss - Battery life is very good I tried this camera and I recommend it to everyone The only comment I have is that this camera doesn't have place to put a filter lens in, and also the shutter speed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply outstanding Bought the camera based on a friends recommendation. Opened the box the day before I left for Phoenix for my daughter's wedding. Figured I would read the instructions during the 4 hour plane ride. Left them on the kitchen table. Shot over 400 pictures. Had to delete maybe 12 because they were out of focus. Needless to say not only was I impressed but I was a hero to my daughter because I was able to download quality photos the day after with lille or no enhancing. Amazing product for this neophite photographer.
