Canon 600EX-RT Overview

  • 1Description

Complete with built-in radio transmission wireless functionality, the Speedlite 600EX-RT sits at the top of Canon's on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II compatible flash lineup with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and 200mm. This two-way 2.4 GHz radio system provides added reliability and a range up to 98.4' among up to 5 groups with a total of 15 individual Speedlites. This system also does not need direct line-of-site like traditional optical-based transmission and will work through obstacles.

For added coverage and functionality, the flash's zoom head can reach from 20-200mm, with the option for wide 14mm coverage when the built-in diffusion panel is used. Also, the unit can tilt from -7 to +90° and rotate 180° either left or right for complete bounce capabilities. On the back of the 600EX-RT is a backlit dot-matrix LCD panel that displays the status and allows users to easily access and change settings. Additionally, the flash is durable with a redesigned contact construction and improved dust and water resistant sealing.

Other capabilities of the 600EX-RT include a stroboscopic mode as well as high-speed, first and second curtain sync settings for more control over your image's final look. The flash is powered by 4 AA batteries which provide a recycle time of 0.1-5.5 seconds, though it does have a port for an optional external power pack. It comes with a color filter holder with case, a light orange filter, a dark orange filter, a mini stand, and a Speedlite case.

    Canon 600EX-RT Reviews

Speedlite 600EX-RT is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 1028.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest flash ever used worth the cost I used a non Canon Flash for the last couple of years. I always had issues controlling the flash and the image was to dark or blown out. When the opportunity arose to purchase the 600 ex-rt at a real good price I figured why not what do I have to loose. I used it this past weekend for a wedding shoot. The match up was perfect to my 1dx. It synced without missing a step. The images came out perfect on the screen, they were even better on the computer. SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY ON THIS FLASH !!!! you won't be sorry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT I recently purchased 5-Canon Speedlites 600EX-RT’s to replace all my 5- 580EXII’s and I sold all my pocket radios receivers. Just as a measure for those who are contemplating to purchase the 600EX-RT’s I still have my first Canon 10D though all the 5D’s- 60D-1DMk 2n-1DKk III & IV. All of them sync at HHS and work flawlessly in all modes “except” the Group feature, & I have a way around that, but will post my findings’ as I have not had the time to-do so at the moment. Hopefully Canon might release a firmware to the existing models to add the group feature in use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Multi Flash Set-up overexpozure This is a reaction to the previous review below by njw1224 from Wheeling, WV. It seems that there is an over exposure problem when using multiple flash set-ups with the 600EX Rt/600EX. This can happen if there are three firing groups - A, B, and C. If a firing group C has been added and an over exposure results, avoid firing group C toward the main subject as this will likely cause the said overexposure. Alternatively, eliminate firing group C, and lump the extra slaves (from the now defunct firng group C) to firing group B or A. This works 99% of the time even if you point all flashes to the main subject. The phenomenon of over exposure in multi flash set-ups has been mentioned in pages 87 and 112 of the 600EX RT manual.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Flash Everything has been well thought-out about this system. The new group functionality is great. I never really tried to figure out the old ratio system used for previous speedlights. The usability of the RT system is perfect. I use a 2.4 GHz radio trigger for my studio strobes that has a ttl pass-through shoe on the transmitter. With this, mixing the manual and RT-TTL system works perfectly. There's no radio interference. If the 600 or ST-E3-RT could do 2nd curtain wireless sync and control the zoom-head wirelessly it would be 100% perfect. In any case this is the best speedlight Canon has ever made and the best wireless TTL system I've ever used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best canon speedlite to date I have most of the speedlites by Canon. I also have several other brands. This one was bought for my 5 D mk III, and qickly has become the favorite. The built quality is the best that I have seen, and the easy menu is a pleasure to work with. As far as performance goes, it is flawless and is also very good on batteris (even with some pretty heavy use). Fast recycling and consistant output is the best that I have had with self contained powered speedlite. Very, very happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Radio Controlled Flash Best flash for Canon users. Only drawback is the price but if you figure in the cost of pocket wizards it is a far better system at a lower price that even does full off camera ETTL and hi-speed sync. I found it here on sale for $$($$off the normal price). An even better deal is the B&H 2 x 600ET-RTs and 1 x ST-E3-RT package I found on sale for $$. You can control everything from your camera (2012 or newer camera is required), use the 600 flash as a master, or with the ST-E3-RT controller. Does everything off camera except 2nd curtain sync. I really like the zoom range of 14mm - 200mm. Still waiting for a 430EX-RT as a smaller radio flash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT I am adding this flash unit to an existing 580EX. Comparing them side by side I can say that the 600EX-RT is significantly better with regard to features, evenness of light, and versatility. I really like the features of this flash unit. I have owned many different flash units over the years...Quantum, Vivitar, Nikon, and Sunpak to name a few. The advances of this unit is remarkable. I also purchased a Canon 6D and have enjoyed the manipulation of features through the camera setting. I did not have this with my 5D. I am pleased with the results from this flash--also using the Vello modifier for an even light situation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Flash This flash is absolutely amazing. I owned a 580EX prior to purchasing this flash. It was an upgrade that was well worth it. The flash is very powerful and having the wireless capabilities built into the flash has changed the way I shoot. I consider myself an advanced amateur and flash photography has been a bit intimidating at times. I took some classes with Canon and I am no longer intimidated with flash. When I couple this flash with the remote transmitter, I have been able to get so much more creative with my shooting. The only real downside I have is that the flash is a bit expensive. However, when considering the fact that you don't need to buy remote triggers such as Pocket Wizards, the overall value of this flash makes sense. I just purchased a refurbished 600EX-RT through Canon's online store. I'm excited about the options I'll have with two flash units now.

    question

Does the Canon 600EX-RT come with a battery and charger?
    Asked by: Anonymous
The Canon 600EX-RT does not come with batteries or a charger, as this flash runs off of four AA alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable Ni-MH batteries. A great option for this battery type that will last a considerable amount of time are the Panasonic Eneloop Rechargeable AA Ni-MH Batteries with Charger: http://bhpho.to/XhVEXH

    question

do these work with the pocket wizards or do i need to by something else so I can use the flash off camera?
    Asked by: Anonymous
To add to Heather S's reply, there are several ways to use the flash off-camera, depending on which camera you have. The Pocket Wizards are one approach. If you own a 7D, or a few other supported Canon cameras, you can use the built-in flash to optically trigger the off-camera flash. You have the option of also firing the built-in flash, or not. In other words, the built-in flash can trigger the external flash without adding light to the picture if you want. On cameras like the 5D, where there is no built-in flash to trigger the 600EX, you need to have some way to trigger it. In addition to the options Heather mentioned (a pair of Pocket Wizards or the Canon ST-E3-RT), a cheaper option to start with is a short flash cable. You can buy these in lengths of a few feet to 10's of feet. Another option is to buy a 2nd 600EX-RT and put that on your camera. The on-camera 600EX-RT can trigger with the off-camera flash, or can trigger the off-camera flash without adding it's own light to the picture.

    question

Will this flash work with my EOS 1DS mark II? Also will the speedlite transmitter ST-E2 trigger it off camera?
    Asked by: laura s.
Yes, the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT will work on the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II DSLR camera. The Canon ST-E2 Transmitter will also trigger the flash off-camera with your setup (however, though not asked, do note the ST-E3-RT Wireless Radio Transmitter will not work with this setup; only optical wireless transmission will be compatible due to the age of your camera).
