Canon GP-E2 overview

  • 1Description

Canon's GPS Receiver GP-E2 records GPS information like longitude, latitude, elevation, direction and Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) as EXIF data on photo files using a compatible EOS camera. This lightweight, compact unit can also serve as an electronic compass or a stand-alone GPS recorder. It was designed specifically for the EOS system, and offers USB and hot-shoe connections with the EOS 5D Mark III and the EOS-1D X (USB connection-only with the EOS 7D). It's also compatible with the Rebel T5i via USB, and with the EOS Rebel T4i and Rebel SL1 via the Digital terminal on each camera.

The GP-E2 offers the same level of dust- and weather-resistance as the EOS 5D Mark III camera when connected to the camera's hot-shoe. Dust- and weather-resistance decreases when it's connected to the camera via the USB cable. For simple and accurate recording of time and location information, the GP-E2 is an ideal complement to the EOS System.

The EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 7D require a firmware upgrade to be compatible with the GPS Receiver GP-E2.

When the EOS 7D is used with the GP-E2 the following restrictions will apply: a) geotagging function will not work for movies while recording; b) geotagging features will not work for movies when using the Map Utility; c) electronic compass information and automatic time setting is not available; d) transmission via the hot shoe is not possible.

    Canon GP-E2 reviews

GPS Receiver GP-E2 is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 134.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Stuff If you're checking out these reviews, you're probably on the fence whether or not you should buy it. Honestly, if you've come this far--keep going. This GPS device does what it says it's supposed to do. Are there cheaper alternatives? Yep. Are the systems this good or better? Perhaps. Am I satisfied I got this? You bet. If you own the 5D Mark III or 7D like myself, it's a great addition especially when you want to tag the information directly to your images. Great product, does what it claims to do and it's easy to use. I'm not sure why it even came with a booklet--that easy. Recommend this item.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to Goodies: Quick lock on signal, Holds signal (even in an all aluminum boat in southeast Alaska)and Records information seamlessly in the EXIF with my only role to remember to turn it on. Standard battery a real plus! Gripes: *Should be smaller! It is MUCH larger than the Nikon competition. Why? *No gps indicator on LCD panel on my 7D. This seems like an oversight on the programmers part. Why? *Straight cord precludes the use of my L bracket for quick verticals on the tripod. Why? My remote cord has a nice 90 degree turn that works with my L bracket, but not the gps. Why?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good device, wish it was built in though Overall works as advertised, light, smallish and long battery life. I like the overall size but I wish the feature was built into the camera. Phone makers seem to be able to fit it in a much smaller device. An even smaller external device that didn't have to use the hot shoe would be better. Functions well if no obstruction overhead. There is a significant lag before the first GPS connection is made but once found, the subsequent attempts are shorter (less than a min). It does help to angle the device toward the sky as per the manual when first syncing. Use caution with all GPS devices. Some places should remain sacred :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product! Canon made a GPS receiver that has good functionality and excellent accuracy. In addition to GPS lat, long, and elevation, it also has a digital compass to add the direction that you took the photograph. The unit can also be configured to keep the clock in your 5DMk3 to within 1sec. While all this is great, why did Canon have to make it so large? and expensive? We already know that GPS functionality is built into phones, point-and-shoot cameras, and other devices. A single chip that does all this could have been included in the 5DMk3 camera body.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just got it and pleased so far I purchased this GPS for a trip to Angkor Wat and I want to document the location and direction of all the shots. That is most important to me. I fully researched this item prior to purchase. When it arrived it was on my camera and in test within minutes. Setup was a snap. I took several shots to see how well this GPS would do. I must say I was quite impressed. The locations of the shot on the maps were accurate within a couple feet! The pros: - Reasonable size and profile when mounted on camera. - Easy to get started and use - Very accurate on the location The cons: - The cost - I would have had this a long time but man that's a lot of money

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to track Picture Locations Well I know the price is a lot but you get what you pay for when you buy quality name brand products... This GPS Receiver works great on My Canon 5D Mark III and it's a solid pice of equipment to have in your camera gear arsenal.I tested it in many different locations and downloaded the pictures with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 and it was just amazing how it records your location as a EXIF file to your picture image on each picture and you could also log your trail if you are hiking in the mountains or wherever you travel...Synchronize the date and time on your camera with a built-in atomic clock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly recommend it The receiver looks like a small space starship once mounted on my Canon 5D Mark III. Works nicely and easily. Sometimes connecting to the GPS takes 2-3 minutes, but cannot indicate in which conditions it is much slower than the norm. Having pictures tagged with all coordinates is a very nice feature to have, primarily went in urban areas or in the wilderness. Actually, it is useful everywhere. Always travel with spare batteries just in case. Forgot to turn it off only the first time: lesson learnt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great GPS Solution I use the GP-E2 primarily for geotagging my photos when I shoot with my Canon 5D Mk III. I am very happy with the solution that the GP-E2 provides, particularly because it communicates directly with my camera via the hot shoe, without needing a USB connection to the camera (5D3 and 1DX only I believe). I love the fact that the GPS has its own battery and isn't a drain on the camera battery (to me a BIG problem with the 6D's built in receiver). It's expensive of course (because it has a Canon logo on it) but the quality is great and overall I am very happy with my purchase.
