FEISOL CB-40D Ballhead with QP-144750 Release Plate
Key Features
  • Ballhead with 33 lb Capacity
  • Dual-Caliper Lock for Stability
  • Integrated Panning Base
  • Seamless Friction Controlled Movement
The CB-40D Ballhead with QP-144750 Release Plate from Feisol is a lighter weight ballhead that inherits the two-locking-system design of previous Fiesol ballhead models. There's one system to lock the ballhead sphere, and a second to lock the base plate for even greater stability. This allows for the added capability of rotating the base plate while maintaining a locked sphere. And the CB-40D is lighter and more compact than its predecessors. It also includes an integrated Panning Base. The CB-40D can be used as a lightweight alternative for heavy-duty tripods, or as a more heavy-duty ballhead option for lighter traveler's tripods. The quick release system is Arca-Swiss compatible.

FEISOL CB-40D Reviews

Sturdy

This ball head is very sturdy. Can easily handle a full frame DSLR and any of my lenses. It is still small enough to allow tripod legs to fold back over it although they are not folded all the way in as far as they could be. A great head.

Not for panorama!

Be careful before you purchase this. There's no bubble level. That's sold separately. Also there's no accessory for panoramic photos to eliminate parallax effect from this company. Hence, I now regret buying this brand's products. Other than that, built quality is sturdy enough. Handled my abuse pretty well (Beaches, rock climbings, extreme hikings..etc). I use it with CT-3342. People say it's light but I disagree. (BTW this tripod will not fit in your backpack). Overall if you are an average photographer I can suggest it. However if you are thinking to use it for real estate, panoramas..etc, look somewhere else.

I combined this ballhead with a FEISOL CT-3441T to create a perfect travel tripod.

I am a travelling Photographer hobbiest who is always looking for a lighter weight edge to my travel kit. This CB-40D Ballhead with QP-144750 Release Plate from Feisol is a great light weight and very effective addition to my Feisol Tripod. The two have quickly replaced my RRS tripod and ballhead. This ballhead is light, easy to manage and easily handles my Nikon DSLR and its range of lenses.

Feisol head and legs

This company hardly gets mentioned in the usual web reviews. I guess I should be happy to have the gear before it gets discovered and the prices rise. I have the tripod and head both. The legs are the CT3441T mated to the CB-40 ball head. This is the right combination for travel. The platform sits beneath a Canon with the new 100-400 lens, and an old Speedgraphic. I went ahead and sprung for the slightly longer legs with the single piece center column. It is a solid setup. I came to this from a wooden Reis. The Reis is arguably the finest still camera support ever made, and can be drug through mud, snow, saltwater, dropped on rocks, etcetera, and not phase the thing. The problem is weight. The Fesisol is 1/3 of the Reis, but care must be taken not to do any of the above to it, as is the case with any CF unit. This Feisol combination is a well engineered, finely crafted minimalist support system. Everything is there that needs to be and not a lick more. Over the years I have had the chance to sample many CF's and this one is as good as anything out there in terms of stability. It will hold quite a bit more weight than specified. Twist locks on both head and legs require little effort to solidly lock. The thing just feels right. How will it be a year from now? Scuffed no doubt, but still high functioning for a long time I think. Comes with a three year warranty, and customer service there is impeccable, as often comes with a small company. One can spend more, but why?

Nicely made ball head that holds medium weight gear. The ball friction knob adjustment interacts with the ball locking adjustment so that is finicky. It has an Arca-style mount but is has a Feisol proprietary safety lock (the shiny push button on the base's side), not the Arca standard that uses two overtravel screw heads on the plate's bottom. Arca bases have a machined recess to trap the plate's overtravel screw heads. To use an Arca plate, you would have to remove the two screws but then there are no safety locks. Not really Arca standard.

Is the FEISOL QR system compatible with the Kirk collar for the Nikon 80-400 mm ED lens and the Sunwayfoto L-bracket for the Nikon D600/610? This may seem to be a trivial question, but not all Arca-Swiss-compatible systems are truly compatible. Many thanks.
