Rollei Retro 80s overview

  • 1Description

Rollei's Retro 80S is a slow-speed panchromatic black and white negative film with extended near-infrared sensitivity to 775nm. This additional red sensitivity helps to cut through haze or fog and also smooth skin tones and blemishes, making it ideal for portraiture. It has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 80/20° and is characterized by a fine grain structure and broad tonal range. It is coated onto a transparent polyester base, with anti-static coatings, that makes it well-suited to scanning applications.

This item contains five rolls of 120-format roll film.

Rollei Retro 80s reviews

Retro 80S Black and White Negative Film (120 Roll Film, 5 Pack) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rich tones I have used this film for portraiture, architecture, landscapes & seascapes, and sailing regattas using 6x9 & 6x6 folding cameras. It has a rich tonal range and contrast & sharpness that renders photos that are both warm & crisp. Whether shooting in bright sunlight or subdued, flat light, I've had excellent results with this film. It scans beautifully too. For me it's an ideal B&W film -- and I shoot predominantly film. Avoid using filters with this film, as filtration turns the lovely tones as stark as ortho copying film. The photo below was shot at box speed in moderately bright sunlight (EV 13 or 14) using a Hasselblad 500CM and 80/2.8 Planar.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One of the few film I love I live in Vancouver, Canada and most of the time it is overcast ( fellas living in Pacific NW, especially Seattle and up know what I mean), and this slight contrasty film is great for shooting under this kind of outdoor ambient light. I rate it mostly as ASA 80 but once in a while as 100 and use it to shoot outdoor portrait and nude. The red sensitivity of this film makes the skin tone about 1/3 to 1/2 stop brighter. I don't rate this with 5 stars because, in my opinion, it would be a bit too contrasty to use for outdoor in a sunny day, not versatile enough; however, it is more than great for dull or flat light situations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing film. This film is incredible. The grain is so unbelievably fine. But the contrast is what got me. Finally I have a film that renders lovely skin tones and can handle both high and low key lighting without effort. I shot my first roll at ISO 100 and pushed it rather hard in ID-11. And was thrilled with the results. Second roll at 60, same excellent results. In summary, it is well worth the cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vintage look and feel I love this film. It's great in Diafine when exposed at EI40. It's also fantastic in Rodinal. Be sure to expose properly. Don't guess with this film, but sure to use your meter and watch your light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE this film I use this product with a 2.8d Rolleiflex camera, because i'm always shooting outside and I love shooting wide open the low iso is perfect. I developed the film with Rollei developer, and it came out with great contrast and still good details in blacks and whites. I will be stocking up on this film! Really hope they don't discontinue it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok but... I tried this film based on the incredible reviews and was hoping for some sweet contrast. I shot this film at box speed without a filter based on the recommendation of several reviewers. What didn't work for me was the lack of shadow detail. Some of my shots that had shadow almost looked like I used a green filter. In researching the issue after the fact, I found this information to be insightful >> http://www.martinzimelka.com/pages/Rollei_Retro80s.html I think the next roll I shoot will be pulled to ISO 20. I will also be trying filters with this film at some point. Right now I am intrigued by what this film is/offers however I don't think it is as versatile as I was led to believe by other reviews. I have only shot one roll therefore my opinion might change over time as I get to know this product better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great film This film is great. Much sharper and more contrasty than say, FP4 (which I love), and so it's a nice change of pace. Slightly glowy, which makes portraits nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Retro 80s 120 Black and White I don't use much film but I found that I like the sharpness of this film
