Rollei Redbird 400 overview

  • 1Description

Rollei/Agfa's Redbird 400 is a unique color negative film that has been reverse-rolled for exposing through the base of the film, rather than directly to the emulsion, in order to produce dramatic red, yellow, and orange toned photographs. By exposing the film through the base, the conventional top blue layer is not fully exposed and the bottom red layer filters the blue light from fully reaching the green and blue layers, resulting in a reddish appearance. The film has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 400/27°, and the amount of red coloring can be controlled by overexposure; with more overexposure pushing the coloring to a yellower palette.

This item is one 36-exposure roll of 35mm film.

Rollei Redbird 400 reviews

Redbird 400 Redscale Color Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposure) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rollei Redbird - VERY RED So I bought this film knowing it gave off strong red/orange/yellow casts...I wasn't prepared for VERY red film! Yes, the effect can be controlled by exposure, however, if you are looking for a film to capture fall foliage, this is NOT the one to use. It gives a very eerie look to images (used it partially in a cornfield near an old barn and silo), and it certainly looks like it could be used for a horror movie. Overall, it's a very interesting film and I would certainly shoot with it again, but perhaps either in a creepier location or in the city - great contrast with black tones, and would make architecture pop. I shot this entirely manual, and only pulled it for a few shots (ISO is 400, pulled it to 100), and also pushed it to 1000 for a couple shots. It did well with all changes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great effects from the film I used this in a homemade pinhole camera on a slightly overcast day for building exteriors at an abandoned plantation. The diffusion effect and red tint are beautiful, perfect for pulling off the creepy atmosphere of the location. It did well at most levels of light exposure. Overall a versatile film with a lovely effect that's too good to resist.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Film to Experiment With! I bought a roll of this too shoot a few years ago. I have just recently started to reorganize my pictures on my PC and the pictures taken with this film are some of my very favorite. The red looks great when doing buildings and cars/trucks. Nature shots look awesome as well. If I start shooting film again I will be buying more of this film.
