ZEISS Distagon T* 15mm f/2.8 ZE Reviews

My New Favorite Lens

This is by far the sharpest prime glass I have in my collection and it is worth every penny. I have this one married to my 50 Meg Canon 5DSR. The clarity, sharpness and color are beyond belief. Ninety percent of my work is landscape and this 15mm Zeiss lens is a huge asset. I waited to do this review until I used this lens in various situations and saw the images. All my shots are extremely sharp from the center to the corners.  I did read a review saying to focus more towards the edges instead of dead center. Yes, that works well. I’ve also read about the lens cap not staying on, well I’ve hiked all over and mine stays on tight. My problem is finding a clean place to store the cap when shooting . . . I just stick it in my shirt. I can’t wait to use this in slot canyons for a few “do-overs”. Love it!

I would buy this lens again!

Pay attention to the lense cap

It is not the usual one. It is 3D in shape and you can't put it in your pocket while shooting. I do have the lens a week only so can't review it yet.

Sharpest lens in my stable

Not only is this the sharpest lens but it has the lowest distortion of all 15mm on the planet. I use it on a Sony 7AR II and because it focuses so easy, manual focus is a dream

My favorite ultra wide angle of all time.

I purchased this lens about 6 months. It replaced my Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 Version 3. I realized I was shooting my Canon at almost exclusively the 16mm end, so I was basically treating it like a prime. So I tested out the Zeiss, and found it to be sharper, and wider obviously. Also far lens vignetting, while that is fixable in post, it definitely introduced a lot of noise in the corners doing that. The fact that I could still use filters sealed it for me. I sold me Canon, and bought this the same day. It's been 6 months, and I still feel the same way.

A mate for my 18mm Distagon

I've done lots of architectural photography with the 18mm Distagon and I love it--the optics, the handling, the mount, the feel, the finish (except unfortunately the lens shade which has a reputation for jamming on the lens due to a design flaw--I carry two lens shades now and tiny screwdrivers to repair one when it breaks down in the field). All really first class except as noted. This 15mm has a built-in lens shade so the jamming problem is solved and, except for that, feels and operates as superbly as the 18mm when you need some extra room around the frame.

The most fun you'll ever have with a lens!

This lens is amazing! My husband bought one for me years ago. While shooting at night i dropped and broke it into little tiny pieces. It was like losing the love of my life. I lost my joy of photography after that. Luckily my husband realized my pain and bought me another one. This lens is amazing for night shooting, landscapes, play shooting.

Zeiss is second to none.

This is my sixth Zeiss lens. The micro contrast, the color saturation, color fidelity, low distortion and build quality are what make a Zeiss lenses unique. For my serious work I exclusively use Zeiss lenses. I highly recommend it.

What is the diameter of the focus ring? I would like to put a gear ring to use a follow focus, but I need to know the diameter to buy an exact ring.
Asked by: bamk
The diameter of the focus ring on the Milvus 2.8/15 ZE and Classic Distagon 2.8/15 ZE lens is 80mm / 3.15", as shown on the website: https://www.zeiss.com/consumer-products/int/photography/milvus/milvus-2815.html#data or https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/consumer-products/downloads/historical-products/photography/classic-lenses/en/datasheet-zeiss-classic-distagon-2815.pdf. We recommend the ZEISS Lens Gear Medium for use with this lens: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1248178-REG/zeiss_2174_300_lens_gear_medium.html.

question

Are there any issues with the Metabones Speedbooster (i.e. focusing to infinity)?
Asked by: NICHOLAS
When using adapters to mount lenses on cameras for which the lenses were not designed, the accuracy of focusing at infinity is completely dependent on the qualify of the adapter and not the lens itself.

question

Is this lens the same optically as the new Zeiss 15mm milvus lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Milvus version of the Distagon 2.8/15 ZE uses the same optical design, but offers improved anti-reflection coatings, a longer focus rotation, removable lens shade and a weather sealed barrel.

question

Does this lens actually accept filters or is the lens convex?
Asked by: Zach A.
The lens is convex but the lens housing extends beyond the apex of the glass and allows for regular filters (95mm). The filters are harder to find because of their size and a little hard to use polarizers because of the flange but they work.

question

My understanding is this lens can now be special ordered from Zeiss with the integrated lens hood removed. Is that available through B&H?
Asked by: John
You are correct that it can be modified by Zeiss for a (hefty) price. I imagine you first need to purchase the lens and then have it modified by Zeiss. Whether you can have B&H do it for you would be a question for B&H. I would call them and ask.
