Genaray SpectroLED 9 overview

  • 1Description

The SpectroLED-9 Light (100-240 VAC/12 VDC) by Genaray is built around a 10-100% dimming fixture with a 60° beam angle. 500 LEDs output an impressive brightness equivalent many times its nominal 35W rating.

In a field dominated by rectangular or square arrays Genaray has made the wise choice of making studio lights circular. Not only does the increased surface area have more wrap-around light characteristics but the shape renders pleasing, natural-looking catchlights in your subject's eyes. And if you're doing portraiture you can soften the SpectroLED-9's output while widening its native 60-degree coverage by slipping the included 3/4 stop diffusion sock over the reflector. Heat is never a concern since the cool-running SpectroLED-9 is barely warm to the touch.

Another way to soften the quality of light is the umbrella socket that's built into the mount. You can use reflective or translucent umbrellas for bounce or shoot-through effects. The socket accepts 7 or 8 mm shafts and the mount has a 65-degree tilting range for perfect placement.

Power is provided by the included multi-voltage power supply/adapter. The inclusion of a cigarette lighter adapter cord also gives you the option of using 12V batteries for convenience or location shooting. You can run the SpectroLED-9 for approximately 300 minutes on an average fully charged battery. Not only are you saving money every time you use the SpectroLED-9 due to its low current draw, but with a 50,000-hour lamp life the SpectroLED-9 is virtually maintenance-free.

Note: Runtime is approximate depending on battery selected

AC or DC Operation
The SpectroLED-9 comes with a 100-240 VAC power source but if you need to shoot in out of the way locations you'll find its DC (battery) capability handy. A cigarette lighter adapter cord is included. Just add your choice of optional 12V battery.
Umbrella Mount
The SpectroLED-9's stand mount has an umbrella socket built into it giving you additional creative options.
Optional Remote Dimming
Squeezing the SpectroLED-9 into tight spaces is no problem. The optional Remote Dimmer gives you the same 10-100% dimming options that you have on the light's control panel but with a 12.8' cable. Operate 1 or several remote equipped SpectroLEDs from remote or central locations. It's also great for controlling a light that's mounted overhead.

    Genaray SpectroLED 9 reviews

    SpectroLED-9 Light (100-240 VAC/12 VDC) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for run-and-gun shoots I needed a lightweight and not-too-big light that would kick out more lumens than the smaller LEDs I carry with me but still fit in our travel case. And I needed it to run for a LONG time on a not-too-heavy battery, because I already travel with 135 lbs of stuff on the road and every pound counts (especially when running up against airline luggage weight limits). This really fits the bill. It ran all night for me on a recent shoot in Miami on a small external Bescor 12v pack (the Halfpint). I couldn't be in a situation where I strung a cord across the floor as it was going to be a heavily trafficked nightclub setting... it feels suitably rugged and the included scrim provided some softness (although I'd like to see a more rugged version of that and some other scrim options.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for my needs and the right price This is part of a Genaray/Impact LED light kit that will surprise you with the quality and amount of light it generates! It did me and my videographer. I needed lights for training videos that I produce for retailers who sell my company's products. I have a very small space in the corner of a warehouse where I must shoot these videos. I've always had the videographer I hire bring his lights, but they are heavy duty, high wattage and -- while they easily lit the set -- they generate lots of heat and sometimes trip breakers. This LED kit generates no heat, uses much much less power and is lighter weight. The dimmers are a big help. No, I couldn't use this kit to light an entire studio, but shooting from a few feet away, in an area confined to the width of a 9' roll of seamless, they work great. The videographer thought he'd have to supplement with one or two of his big lights, but he didn't.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Using it for Photography I bought this Genaray LED lighting system to use it in my portable PhotoBooth and also to use as a continuous lighting source for photography. I had originally bought a fluorescent lighting kit and retuned it right away because fluorescent lights get incredibly hot instantly, it was an extreme disadvantage. Genaray has incredible reviews and it's no wonder, this lighting system is incredible, it's nicely built and doesn't weigh as much as other systems. I used this lighting system for a wedding to light up an extremely dark room, this lighting system compensated for the lack of light in the room, i still ended up using my speedlight's but my pictures wouldn't have looked as amazing as they do without this LED lighting system. I also have this system inside my Photo Booth shell case, the pictures it helps produce come out sharp and beautiful because of the cool lighting it casts. I am looking forward to purchasing a few more of these in the near future to continue to use for indoor photography. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Value This is a solid choice for budget-conscious daylight balanced lighting. It works like a big broad source, throwing light in an almost 180 pattern. If spill isn't a concern, and you're looking for some low power draw sources with minimal expense, it's a nice option. With a sensitive enough camera, it can even be used as a soft key, although I would probably typically opt for the bigger brother version of this same light instead, and reserve this for back/kicker and fill jobs. I also use them for lighting chroma screens, since they throw such an even beam. Positive notes: good CRI, built-in dimming, environmentally friendly, lightweight, inexpensive, no lamps to replace, low power draw, even intensity values, very low running temperature (you can Hollywood this light, no problem), long cable from power supply, round shape aesthetically pleasing. Negative notes: cheap plastic mount, odd shape makes crating and carrying somewhat difficult, diffusion material is odd and difficult to apply, no spill control whatsoever.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Value not as sturdy as AD75 This is not built as nice as the SP-AD75, the big brother to this product. the housing on the back is plastic and not metal. This impressed me on the larger version and was some what of a let down on this little guy. This makes no difference in the perfomence of this light. It is a great light for the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from May have quality issues Ordered 3 of these lights for a small tabletop studio setup. One of them appeared to be already used - it was clearly unpacked and repacked, parts were missing. B&H was good about sending out replacements for the missing parts. That being said, within a couple of weeks one of the lamps died altogether. Not sure if it's the one that had the initial issues or not. Other than these problems, the lights are nice, easy to work with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what we needed Recently did a newborn shoot, and this light with an unbrella helped a lot, not overly bright using the unbrella, but did the trick for keeping the shadows down and we did not have to use a flash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Product Photography I bought two of these LED lights to replace my bulky softboxes and am so happy I did. I use these two with a Porta-Trace Light Box and am getting exceptional quality pictures. I like that these don't throw off any heat so I can leave them on while photographing several products (softboxes had 300w bulbs which threw off so much heat I had to constantly turn off and on). These lights are so light I can easily lift and hold in different positions while photographing products. The dimmer is a nice treat as I can focus more light from one side by dimming the other. If I had a larger budget I would have liked to get the larger version of these lights since they have a dimmer and I can always turn down if they're too bright. If I add anymore lights I'll go with the larger version.Construction quality is very good. Well designed for easy holding, switch location is designed well as I can turn on and off without looking for it. Overall very sturdy and well designed.I was surprised at how effective the Diffusion Sock worked. Although the light is pretty even without the sock, adding the sock improved the diffusion. Overall, very good diffusion with the sock.
