Sony NEX-FS700UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens
Key Features
  • 4K Exmor Super 35mm CMOS Sensor
  • Capture 1920 x 1080/60p Video
  • Includes 18-200mm Lens
  • NXCAM Recording Format (AVCHD)
The Sony NEX-FS700UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens is a fully professional large-sensor video camera. Hot on the heels of the FS100, this compact, highly modular camera uses a very similar-sized Super 35 CMOS sensor as the FS100. But as a marked improvement over that earlier model's sensor, the FS700 features a native 4K resolution sensor.

Unlike smaller, broadcast-style sensors or the larger "full-frame" sensors of some DSLRs, the NEX-FS700's imaging area matches that of standard Hollywood film cameras, providing complete compatibility with cine-style film lenses (sold separately), as well as the Sony 18 - 200mm lens included with the camera (that's 27 - 300mm in terms of 35mm equivalence). The sensor's large size offers a variety of other advantages, including increased control over depth of field, higher sensitivity in low light, lower image noise, and an exceptional dynamic range.

Able to shoot full 1080p video in a range of frame rates up to 60p, the FS700 provides the option of recording AVCHD footage onto SD card/MemoryStick or via the FMU (flash memory unit) port, or it can output 4:2:2 video (with embedded timecode) via HDMI 1.4 or 3G/HD-SDI to an external recording unit. Simultaneous recording to both is also possible when instant backup is called for. There's no stinting on audio, either, as the camera includes not only a shotgun microphone with mount/carrying handle, but dual XLR inputs for recording uncompressed, professional-level sound from an external source.

One unique feature for a camcorder of this class is the FS700's ability to record bursts of super-slow motion video at rates up to a whopping 960 fps. (These bursts range from 8 to 16 seconds, depending of the frame rate). Full-resolution recording is possible at up to 240 fps; at 480 and 960 fps, resolution is reduced.

The 3G/HD-SDI port will get expanded capability when a future firmware upgrade is available (not included). This will allow 4K output via the BNC as a data stream, which can be recorded to an optional Sony 4K recorder.

Other included features--such as a 3.5" LCD panel with detachable with viewfinder attachment, super sensitivity, a built-in ND filter and up to 960 fps super slow motion, all help to set this model in a class truly by itself. Not only will it intercut perfectly as a 2nd unit or B camera, it can stand on its own in applications as diverse as indie film, commercials, music promos and education.

Sony NEX-FS700U Reviews

This camera is awesome.

This camera has tremendous value. We've used it for both commercials, as well as documentaries. We use it with nikon prime lines by using a nikon adaptor. The large sensor give a great look and does a pretty good job in low light with little added noise.Would make a great pairing with a Atoms Samurai with I plan to upgrade to soon. The over crank option is just beautiful 240 frames at full 2k. It's limited to under 10 seconds, but at 240 frames, this stretches the shot out to a family long glorious shot. The screen is a tad small and I'd recommend an external mounted screen, but it'll make due in a pinch.

For the price, this camera is fantastic with its capabilities for interchangeable lenses, super-slow-motion, professional sound, and large sensor. The images are crisp and the camera is easy to use. For me, it's a bit too heavy for handheld work and I'll need to get a 3rd party rig/shoulder mount in order to better distribute the weight. My wrist is not strong enough to support the camera with the grip mount alone. The ND filters are a blessing and the eye piece serves it's purpose and I'm glad they both came with the camera.

Fantastic Camera, Terrible Rebate

The title pretty much says it all. I've been waiting for my Odyssey 7Q to come and even though it hasn't made it in the camera still outperforms many other's I have used. It has better more reliable audio than any of the Red line and it's image is comparable. I would argue that it's image is actually better than the Red because it's saturation levels are much nicer before color correction. This gives my clients a better idea of what the footage will look like after color correction. Both the Red and this camera have fantastic flexibility from the editor's standpoint, but the ND filters on this bad boy are a life saver. Also the XLR imports are a clear must for professional video. Yes technically it would be great to always have a sound guy, as the red requires, but lets be real. Crews are constantly shrinking and there's no end in sight. This camera makes it possible to grab what you need. The camera is a joy, but don't get sucked in by the rebate. I submitted for this as soon as I could and it took 3 months and 14 days to receive the metabones adapter after I received the camera. In the mean time I had to spend an extra $400 to attach my lenses to the camera so I could actually work. It infuriates me that I spent so much on the camera and I couldn't use it because something that was supposed to come with the camera took so long to get to me. Especially when the issue was a lack of stocking the item on the rebate company's side. Arrrg! Now that I have that off my chest let me just say once again that this is a great camera.

Best camera for independent filmakers

When Sony announce this 4K ready camera I had FS-100 model and decide to step up to 4K RAW option immediately, even most of people was skeptical about its quality. Now I'm happy to see, that I was right! Combination of 4K, 12-bits RAW with hi-speed recording in 60fps, 120fps and 240fps in 2K Mode work well for the cost of it... $$ for the body, plus $$ for HXR-IFR5 interface unit, AXR-R5 RAW Recorder, AXS-512 Memory card, with Card Reader and V-lock battery give us a total cost of $18K-$20K (with two memory cards)which is more than twice less then RED Epic package! Who don't need 4K RAW are able to get Odyssey monitor-recorder for about $$ and be happy! :) One of the best option with this camera is E-mount - it's give us to use almost ANY lenses on it, with adapters... for the 4K filming I would recommend to use THE BEST available lenses, such as Zeiss Compact Primes and Zooms...
