Okii Systems FC1 Overview

The Okii FC1 USB Focus Controller connects to a Canon DSLR by USB cable and controls focusing and common camera functions. The unit is compatible with the 1D C, 1D X, 1D Mk IV, 5D Mk III/II, 7D, 6D, 70D, 60D, T5i, T4i, T3i, T2i, and T1i, and with all Canon, Sigma, and Tamron autofocus lenses. Tokina lenses are also compatible, but can experience camera lock ups with the Canon 7D if the focus command rate is set faster than the lens is able to move the internal focus element. Manual focus lenses will not have focus control, but other functions, such as settings changes or video start/stop, will work.

The Controller is handheld and connects into Canon's USB protocol by an A to mini-B cable that can be as short as 6 inches or as long as 80 ft. The small size of the unit and the use of a USB cable connection leaves the camera's HDMI output available and accessible. Also, instead of being used handheld, the unit can alternatively be mounted onto a rig by a 1/4"-20 mount on the back of the enclosure.

The FC1 features 9 buttons and a rotating knob. It uses the autofocus motor in a lens to control focus while recording video or in any Live View modes. It also controls video recording Start/Stop, image capture, digital zoom, autofocus/metering, Live View, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, and focus zone position while not recording.

Certain characteristics of Canon's USB Protocol make the FC1 perform differently than a mechanical follow focus, and the FC1 user guide helps explain the effects. Okii also backs the FC1 with a 15-day money-back guarantee.

The good: Worked on my 6D without a problem. Works will all of my favorite lenses. The focus wheel feels nice, just the right amount of resistance. The Bad: The buttons float so when you handle the unit it rattles, I actually opened it up on the first day to find the loose piece! Using the preset focus points I always have to set them twice, not a big deal. When using the presets, it rarely hits the focus point correctly, so using this at say F:1.8 you do better racking manually, on wider lenses you may be able to use the presets more, but that's kind of the point of racking, is that you notice the rack! Like most reviewers have said, the big problem using a USB focus is the noise from the lenses. Even the USM sounds like a locomotive on the in camera audio!

Nice USB Focus

This controller is proof that you get what you pay for. It's built solid and is very reliable. I use it with my Canon 6D when it is on my jib. I would recommend this purchase for anyone who need to control their camera without actually having to touch it. The only thing it doesn't control is the zoom.

Indispensable for working with a jib

Can access almost every function in camera and focus without touching the lens

Works well - just understand the limits.

It does exactly as it specifies. I'm using as part of a steadicam/gimbal setup. Because it changes focus through software, not hardware, it makes the changes in small jumps. You can't get the perfectly smooth focus that you can on a mechanical (for 3-10 times the price). If the camera is sitting still, it's very noticeable. It works okay when you're moving and changing focus on the fly - I've been happy with it so far. I can't afford the $- mechanical follow focuses that I want, so I'll keep using that the best I can. =)

Must have for remote camera placements

If you use your Canon DSLR on jibs or other remote placements this is a must have tool. In addition to allowing you to focus, you have control of shutter, f-stop and ISO. Well built, has 3 focus ratios for fine close-up work. Only wish it would control zoom as well.

The Right Choice for Modest Gimbals

Attaching the Okii FC1 to our entry-size gimbal for a Canon 5d MkIII was the best shopping decision we could have made. The focus buttons to the left of the wheel make it similar to operating a convenient servo trigger, and setting the focus points with thumb-friendly operation is also powerful tool. The instant auto-focus is helpful before capturing but will alter your image settings as it detects the subject, so not a good idea during image capture. Remember, too, that any focus system running through the camera's AF drive will inevitably cause jumping through the focus planes and this controller is not immune. Also it's not wireless so the cable will probably affect your gimbal balance. A hyper-thin cable is highly recommended. The size makes it perfect for attaching to the gimbal handle, but this focus controller shines even brighter on a tripod system where the operator has the most control. For the price this Okii is definitely a superior product to comparable USB controllers with fewer tools.

Does the trick!

We picked this up in a rush delivery b/c our broadcast camera went down & had to use our Canon 5D on our Jib. It worked great! It did everything we needed it to do - a must have if you'll be using a Jib. Only thing I wish it did (which is not a product limitation - rather a camera) is zoom. We still had to swing it down from the Jib to manually zoom in/out, then swing the arm back up. The product mentions it zooms, but it's really just a digital zoom to get in super close to obtain sharp focus.
