Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera overview

The Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera features a 2.5K image sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, and a Canon EF lens mount. It is capable of recording 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW files at full 2.5K (2432 x 1366) resolution, as well as 10-bit Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD formats at 1080p. The camera records to removable 2.5" SSDs, which enable the high data rates required for RAW and ProRes HQ recording.

The camera is housed in an elegant, minimalist enclosure, crafted from a single block of aluminum. The Canon EF lens mount offers compatibility with Canon EF, Zeiss ZE, and other third party EF mount lenses. Footage is monitored and settings are adjusted using the large 5" rear LCD touchscreen. The touchsreen also lets you easily add metadata to your shots, such as shot number, filenames, and keywords, which can save time and money in the post-production process.

To handle the high data video output, Blackmagic includes a full version of DaVinci Resolve, its premier color correcting software for Mac and Windows. Also included is a copy of UltraScope. When connected to a computer via Thunderbolt, the software provides technically accurate waveform monitoring, displaying six live scope views on a single monitor.


PLEASE NOTE: The camera cannot format SSD drives. SSD drives have to be formatted (via an external 2.5" compatible dock) as HFS+ or exFAT on a Mac or Windows PC.

Dynamic Range
Captures a super wide dynamic range of 13 stops into 12-bit DNG files for a true "filmic" look, offering more flexibility in your shooting locations. Also it preserves detail in both shadows and highlights, and even handles indoor shots while keeping the details of any images captured through windows, and allows for keeping all sensor data and enhancing the creative decisions during DaVinci Resolve color grading.
EF Lens Mount
The Canon EF compatible lens mount lets you use Canon's extensive line of EF lenses, Zeiss ZE lenses, as well as third party EF mount lenses. The active mount enables full electronic control with compatible EF mount lenses.
Capacitive Touchscreen Display
The five-inch touchscreen allows for setting up a shot, as well as playback from the SSD using the transport control buttons below the screen. You can enter shot data and update the camera's settings using the capacitive touchscreen display. Also control the camera's operating functions with a simple touch of the screen, just double tap to zoom the image for fast and accurate focus. Additionally a data strip provides you valuable information including record status, shutter angle, ISO, battery level, record time and more.
Metadata Entry
The Blackmagic also features built-in metadata entry so that files include information compatible with popular editing software. This dramatically speeds up the whole post production process, and can save a production valuable time and money. Entering metadata is easy - simply tap the capacitive LCD touchscreen to display the slate where information can be entered including shot number, search tags, scene number, Timecode, and more. You can set shot number and other data to increment automatically, allowing for quicker setups while shooting. And the Metadata is compatible with leading editing software and is fully searchable, bypassing the time consuming task of searching for specific shots when editing a project.
SSD Recorder
A Built-in SSD recorder uses low cost 2.5" SSDs and allows for 2.5K uncompressed CinemaDNG RAW 12-bit capture, as well as Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD compressed video formats. You can play back directly from the camera, mount the disk to any computer, or use Blackmagic Design's HyperDeck Studio deck. Also with Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD video formats, you can record for more than five hours on a single 480 GB SSD, allowing you to shoot longer and give yourself more footage to play with in the editing process. All file formats conform to open standards used by most professional NLE software, allowing for seamless integration into most post workflows. When finished shooting, simply connect the SSD to a computer and edit or color shots straight from the disc.
Connectors
The Blackmagic uses only standard connections, no custom cable required, providing great versatility for most productions. Dual balanced microphone/line audio inputs for recording high quality uncompressed audio is also available. A 3 Gb/s SDI out for on set monitoring or for sending to live production switchers is provided as well. The Blackmagic includes 12 to 30 VDC input for power and battery charging, a stereo mini (3.5mm) headphone output, a LANC remote control, and high speed Thunderbolt port for computer capture.
Open File Formats
The Blackmagic camera also uses standard file formats. The recording of native 2.5K resolution uses the open CinemaDNG format, delivering full 12-bit RAW recording quality, so it provides HD quality images. Additionally, you can choose 1080HD recording into ProRes and DNxHD compressed video formats for even greater compatibility.
Included Software
The Blackmagic Camera also comes with Full DaVinci Resolve software including Resolve USB dongle for Mac and Windows. You can shoot wide dynamic range images and then make color correction decisions in post production with this industry standard software. Additionally, Media Express software for video capture from the camera's Thunderbolt port is provided, and UltraScope provides technically accurate waveform monitoring. You can also connect the camera to any computer using Thunderbolt to display six live scope views on a single monitor.

    Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Technical Support!!! We purchased a BlackMagic Cinema Camera EF Mount from B & H Photo in 11/2013, and recently started having problems with it. There are dots on the screen, possibly dead pixels. BlackMagic Technical Support has informed us that without a warranty, there is nothing they can do! They said eventually they will have potential plans available to help customers in cases like this for recalibration of their sensor and to keep checking back with them. Prior to this problem, the camera was great, but knowing that you can't fix this camera outside of the warranty is disturbing. We are willing to pay to have the camera repaired, but they won't help us! Beware!!!

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great image with a cheap price When I first got the camera it had the original firmware. So I used the camera and it was awful!! Then once I upgraded to the firmware everything was perfect. The camera is great for many things. I've used it on events, interviews, short films, etc. Before you purchase this camera just research the limitations and understand what you need to make this camera work. For example the batter lasts no more than 30 minutes, its noisy at 800 iso or higher, the lcd screen is useless in sunlight. I knew these work arounds before I purchased and it was everything I was expecting. When used correctly/lit properly, this camera is golden when it comes to image quality for this price.

    Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mehhh, overhyped Not impressed, The worst: clunky, no audio meters, Iso 1600 limit, the absolute worst lcd screen I have ever seen. Honestly if you outside you will not be able to see the screen, the shade is useless. The audio inputs obviously require some sort of adapter but why even get those when you cant see the audio meters. So many shortcomings that were suppose to be worth it for the image quality but I honestly think a tiny sony nex-7 blows this thing away. This camera is for a tentative, slow, post reliant shooter with a huge budget for buying the $5000 worth of add-ons to make this thing usable. The best: Nice neck strap included.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera - Not for beginners The picture quality that this camera can produce is absolutely magical. Having a camera that is designed and paired with Blackmagic Design software allows artists the opportunity to create stunning footage. As a marketer, I feel that brands are going to latch onto this idea of pairing their own cameras with their own software. This pairing allows for the best possible image. The one important factor that I stress with this camera is that it is not for beginners. One has to have a good comprehension of ISO, flange distance, 2.5k raw workflow, shutter angles and color grading. However, I am very pleased with this camera and its abilities.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome if you know what you're getting! I work with motion graphics and post production for the past 14 years. I already own a SONY HVR-Z1 and the BMCC just blows everything away! The quality of the picture is amazing! Of course people who buy this need to have at least a basic knowledge around post production, because this isn't a shoot and edit camera! You get the most out of it if you are able to color grade the footage properly, and of course you need a pretty decent workstation for that! (no iMacs, macbooks etc.) Overall it's exactly what I was expecting. Also the build quality is amazing!!!

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleased This camera was worth the wait. The low light performance with a fast lens is reason enough to buy it. It basically sees what my eyes see. Love the time lapse feature with the latest firmware upgrade. Got some weird flickering on the monitor right after the firmware upgrade, but it went away after I rebooted. It's awkward for a DSLR shape, so you definitely need some add-ons to make it viable as a hand-held camera. You'll also want a separate monitor so you don't always have to be right behind the camera. The raw footage (DNG) is pretty easy to work with if your system meets the minimum specs for working with raw in DaVinci Resolve 9, which comes with the camera. Very pleased with the camera so far.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding camera, but hidden costs Am VERY happy with this purchase. I use this camera for projects ranging from documentary to commercial advertising. The image quality, dynamic range, color depth, and RAW ability make this camera an outstanding device for any form of motion picture capture. The faults (more like warnings) I have with the camera is the ergonomics of it and its more of an investment than it appears at first. You will not be able to properly shoot with this camera without a cinema kit. At least a Matte box and focus pull knob at bare minimum. The RAW format also eats up a lot of space, aprox. 250 gigs per 30 minutes of footage, so have spare SSDs. The camera also has a set internal battery, that has about 1 hour of life in it, with over an hour charge time, so a battery solution is a must in most environments. With that, a good lens for the camera can set you back the cost of the camera or more. If you are serious about production, and willing to shell out the hidden costs, then this is a great camera! Also, be aware you are taking on a much more extensive work flow than with typical digital capture devices, especially when in the RAW format. The controls while shooting, on the other hand, are very simple and easy to understand.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely A Game Changer Put down your DSLR and pick up a BMCC. The resolution, dynamic range, and the color are way ahead of any DSLR including the 5D???. I have found it very easy to use, but there is a learning curve involved. It's not a run and gun right from the box. You will need an external battery and possibly some monitoring options. However, this is a cinema camera designed for well planned scenes. If you approach your situation with that mindset, I think you will be more than pleased. It has been great to see what RAW can do, but the ProRes very adequate in many of the same situations.
