The Hoya 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing an exposure reduction of about 1.5 to 9 stops. The 0.45 to 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than would normally be required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter is constructed from optical glass to maintain image clarity and is set within a slim profile aluminum ring, which helps to reduce the likelihood of vignetting when used on wide-angle lenses, and does not feature front threads.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from ND Filter I have yet to use for the purpose I had bought it for which was seascapes. When I tried some test shots it preforms well at the low end but towards the max stop the picture can gain a purple tone on highlight areas

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Vari ND Works great! I don't notice any color cast and the images still look sharp. It's just what I was looking for to get a shallow depth of field at high noon with my strobes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm in heaven! I use this filter on my 18-200mm zoom lens in shooting landscapes. I have a limited use so far, but it meets my expectations. The high end is ineffective, but I still am very satisfied. Solid construction.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Its okay, wouldnt get a variable one I would get a non variable filter instead of a variable grade one, someitmes there is an inconsistent effect, it workds you just have to be mindful of it

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wow Not Impressed I purchased this item for one reason I needed a 10 stop ND filter to do some long exposures with. I thought the variable density would be cool, it is like several filters in one. But not so much. at the minimum end of the ND there is a butter fly shaped vignette right in the middle of the filter. what a let down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well priced must-have for serious amateur photographer. The ND filter is something I'd read lots about but never bothered to buy, since Ithought really that my polarizing filter could duplicate the effect. Not so. This filter, which is variable, allows much longer exposures, and allows for a wider f-Stop than a polarizer. Think about the following scenes: An interesting room, say in a museum, with lots of people you'd rather not have in your image A pretty natural sky on a clear day. Sunset A night scene with a full moon Taking a close up with your favorite Macro lens, with a sweet focus spot at f4 in sunlight If you've encountered any of these scenarios the ND filter will be your friend. And, if you have one already, a second can't hurt; they're stackable. So, just do it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vari Density filter I use this for landscapes primarily. I've been using a Singh-Ray 77mm filter on my Nikon stuff and as I transitioned to a Fujifilm system, there were few 77mm lenses. After using a reducer for my old filter and borrowing friend's stuff, I realized that this filter had no draw backs when compared to the Singh-Ray (that cost twice as much!! I continue to have zero issues with the photo quality or the clarity of the Hoya.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Save your moner. I had great expectations but found it wouldn't block as much light as I had hoped. At the darker end I ended up with 'X' ghosting which reduced the effective range. I no longer use this filter and have replaced it with a 10 stop solid ND filter and have a 16 stop on backorder.
