Designed compact and robust, and affording a workflow beyond just capture and output, Ninja can serve companion-like on and off the set. Also noteworthy is the Atomos history. Atomos recorders were used, for example, in James Cameron's Deep Sea Challenge.

Ninja comes packaged in a tough carrying case with a bunch of accessories including two batteries and two SDD/HDD enclosures.

10-bit 4:2:2 / 220Mbps / 2.5" HDD or SSD
The Ninja-2 takes any uncompressed HD or SD source and encodes it in real-time to 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD at up to 220Mbps.

Because Ninja is portable, it can record from the ultimate image source, the sensor of the camera.

Recording is always in 10-bit, even from an 8-bit source. Color registries are added for integration into higher bit-depth graphics from CG, animation and special effects. This avoids banding and makes editing and grading, in fact any precision effect, more accurate.

question

Connecting this to the Roland V1-HD with 4 cameras as a preview monitor showing all 4 inputs. Will this capture only the live shot, or if it is setup displaying all 4 will it only capture the 1 live shot?
Asked by: Stephen
Hi Stephen, We will record up to 1080p30/1080i60 coming from a HDMI source. Looking at the Specs for the V1-HD it outputs 1080i60 or 1080p60. We will only be able to display and record the 1080i60 signal. -Ian

question

I see the ninja 2 is compatible with a Canon 5d mark III. Does that mean it is also compatible with the mark ll?
Asked by: Anonymous
It is essentially compatable with any camera that has an HDMI out port. You run your HDMI cable from the camera into the recorder. I don't know what the video specifications on the 5d MK II are, but it will only record at the maximum resolution that the camera will output (up to 1080p) at a maximum of 30 FPS.

question

Hi, Do you know why there is no 1080p29.97 in almost all Ninja, in the Supported formats (in/out) , only 1080i60, 1080i59.94, 1080i50, 1080p30, 1080p25, 1080p24, 1080p23.98, 1080pSF23.98, 1080pSF24, 1080pSF25, 1080pSF30, 720p60, 720p59.94, 720p50, SD 480i, 576i ?Thank You!
Asked by: Bob S.
1080i 59.94 is drop frame so it is 29.97, just not progressive. You would have to deinterlace in post.

question

Black magic is 200 dollars more expensive than this. is this a good purchase or is BM price justifiable?
Asked by: ELAINE S.
Both units are good and will do the job. If you need SDI, you need the Blackmagic Design Video Assist since the Atomos Ninja is HDMI only. If you want a want a Full HD screen, get the BM. If you want to save money and do not need Full HD and SDI, get the Atomos.

question

If my input is in 1080 60, can i record in 720 60?
Asked by: Jeffrey H.
Sorry, no. The camera and the recorder must be matched in their settings. The recorder cannot do conversions.
