Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Reviews

Very Good but not perfect

I use it with a Fuji X-T3 and an Olympus E-M5-III. What I like: price, built quality, sharpness even at full aperture What I don't like: all manual, no chip to transmit focal and aperture to the camera, minimum distance of 1 meter, chromatic aberration at f/1.4 in high contrast situations.

I was looking for a little longer lens for night photography. This one was so inexpensive I decided to try it. It's too long for big pano Milky Way shots but for night cityscape, blue hour and day landscape shots it's superb. I found the infinity focus, taped it with gaffers tape and rarely use it for anything else. Very sharp, great color.

Incredible value

This isn't a perfect lens, but it's practically unbeatable for the price. I've had it for over a year now so I have a good idea of what works and what doesn't for me, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons, especially at the value. The elephant in the room is that it is entirely manual, so there will be a bit of a learning curve if you aren't used to that, but Fuji's focus peaking makes focusing a breeze. A lens like this is definitely geared towards portraits, and it does a great job at that. It isn't the sharpest lens in the world, but it's dang good, and it works well with post-sharpening filters. It adds a significant amount of weight to my X-T2, but with a battery grip it balances out quite nicely. It definitely has issues with CA in harsh light, but it's not a dealbreaker by any means. Stopping down to f/2 sharpens the images up quite a bit, but they look quite nice wide open. All of the included images have had some amount of post-processing, but they still represent what this lens is capable of quite well. If you need a fast portrait shooter and don't want to go all the way to the Fuji 90mm f/2, this is your next best bet!

First portrait lens

I've never owned a dedicated portrait lens before. I usually used a wide to telephoto zoom to cover portraits unless using medium format. The lens itself does everything I wanted it to and more. If you're looking for an inexpensive alternative to your brand's 85 you won't go wrong buying this.

question

will it work with a nikon d3200?
Asked by: Anonymous
This version of the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 lens has the Canon mount, so would not be compatible with the Nikon D3200. For the Nikon D3200, you would need to go with the Nikon mount 85mm f/1.4 (B&H # SA8514NAE).

question

is this compatible with the Nikon D5200?
Asked by: Anonymous
The lens on this particular link is a version for Canon which is not compatible with Nikon cameras, but they do offer a version for Nikon. Below is a link to the Nikon version of the lens. The lens is a manual focus only type of lens but is compatible with the D5200. It will confirm when the subject is in focus and will also permit the cameras auto meter to work properly. What exactly does Aspherical mean?

What exactly does Aspherical mean?
Asked by: JIM
Aspherical refers to the non-spherical, mostly flat front element of the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 lens. In technical terms, lenses that use an optical assembly without large spherical pieces of glass are known as such.

question

I shoot on the 30D camera and do a lot of portraits and also shoot for outdoor campaigns. Is this a lens you would recommend?thanks
Asked by: Anonymous
The Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Canon would be compatible with the Canon 30D, and would be a great option for portraits. As for campaigns, that would really depend on what you are shooting and the aesthetic you are going for. Do keep in mind, that this lens is a manual focus lens.
