Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 overview

  • 1Description

The 7.5mm f/3.5 UMC Fisheye MFT Lens from Samyang - Black is the first model in a new series of Samyang lenses designed specifically for the Micro Four Thirds system of cameras. Compact and with superior optics it is compatible with any micro four thirds mount. Providing a 180º angle of view, this lens is ideal for shooting panoramic vistas and for stitching together sweeping full 360º views. It is perfect for exploring the creativity of wide-angle lenses by distorting and exaggerating normal perspectives and with its large depth of field, it's a great lens for close-up shots and fun portraits. The built-in petal shaped lens hood provides some protection for the lens but more so, assures that glare and flare stay out of your photographs. Samyang will be introducing more lenses for micro four thirds cameras, but this simple, affordable lens offers a great option for MFT users to explore their world from a fisheye perspective.

    Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 reviews

7.5mm f/3.5 UMC Fisheye MFT Lens - Black is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for m4/3 Great lens. If you are looking for a high quality fisheye look no further. This thing is sharp, well built, and delivers beautiful high contrast images. Don't worry that its only manual focus and aperture. Just shoot in A or M modes. I also program a fn. button on my OMD to zoom in on a selected area so manual focus is painless. Most shots are at infinity anyways. One negative to mention, I do not like the lens cap. It's tough to find correct position for it to click on and it's leaves permanent marks on the silver finish of the built in lens hood. Otherwise, this lens is pretty flawless. For the price it's a great buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3rd fisheye I've used, and maybe best I have been using fisheye lenses for over 10 years, starting with a 16mm full-frame one for film Nikons. I have taken thousands of shots with a 10.5mm Nikon DX fisheye lens, and added this lens as my 3rd MFT lens. So far I have used it for landscapes and architectural shots. Since it is a fully manual lens, I use aperture priority mode, set the lens on f5.6 and focus it at where I guess the hyperfocus distance is just below infinity. It is very sharp and color rendering seems excellent. Matrix metering does not work well due to the large angle of view (I use center-weight or spot). My only complaint is that indicated focal distance jumps from 0.25 meters to infinity, which makes setting hyperfocus distance a guess.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth it at full retail. I bought this from B&H about a month ago and couldn't be happier. The lens is a real gem given it's dimunitive size and IQ. Build Quality: I recommend getting the black and not the silver. I have the silver, but within a week scratches started showing up around the front from sliding the cap on and off. I'm not all that upset as every silver Olympus lens I own (the plastic ones) tend to be prone to surface scratches. It's just worth mentioning if color is a deciding factor. The silver is painted over the black (a thin layer). The metal base is really nice and has a slight heft to it. The plastic in general is quite robust and can't find any fault with the exterior build quality. One thing to note- the aperture ring turns clockwise from wide open to stopped down. I kept getting it confused as most MF lenses rotate the other way. Because there is so much DOF I found myself shooting at F22 instead of 3.5 a few times! No big deal though, the focusing and aperature ring are a pleasure to use with a nice amount of resistance. Optical Quality: It's sharp in the center. I was kind of taken back by how sharp it was on my E-P5. There isn't much fall off in the mid area either. I don't scrutinize the corners given the distortion affect, but they look really good to me. Few other things. I've owned the 9-18mm and was about to buy it again (long story). Anyhow, after much research- I found that this lens can be easily de-fished. Yes, it's true. I've been able thusfar to squeeze some nice 14mm equivelant photo's out of it..decent corners as well. Still having hundreds of shots on my hard drive to compare it to the 9-18mm...this is better. It also has better contrast and very noticeably so. I have no regrets except I should have gotten it in black. I don't consider that a deal breaker for what it can deliver. The size is crazy small compared to other fisheye's I've had. I own quite a bit of M43 glass and can say- I should have bought this two years ago. I really dig this lens. If you like fisheye- then buy it. If you want to de-fish the lens for landscapes but don't want to shell out 3 times more for a 7-14mm zoom ..yes, you should buy this lens. It's just a heck of a lot of fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome on the OM-D EM-5! This lens is awesome. Period. If you have been considering getting a fisheye on MFT, just get this lens. It is SO amazing for the money. If you are nervous about manual focus, do not fret! With such a wide angle lens, you get a huge depth of field without trying. I set mine around f/5.6 and pull the focus just a tiny bit before infinity and everything from a meter or two away to infinity is sharp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value for m43rds fisheye lenses I have been looking at the following Fisheye lens in the m43rds format: Pany Fisheye Pany Fisheye converter for 14mm Samyang Fisheye The converter makes the 14mm about an 11mm, which isn't as wide as the Samyang at 7.5mm, and the Samyang is much cheaper than the Pany Fisheye (nearly half the cost), so in terms of performance to cost, this Samyang is easily the best value for the m43rds format so far. Immediate impression upon getting the lens is that it's extremely well made and solid for such a tiny lens. Comes with a lens pouch which is nice (hello Olympus...). Pics taken so far have been terrific and this lens is a lot of fun. Set it at about f5.6 and everything is sharp. It can be used for shooting in low/dim light conditions, but I recommend setting it up on a tripod to get the very best out of it. Furthermore, this fisheye helps to fill a gap in my lens kit. I have been looking for an ultra-wide angle lens, and all of the current ones available are really pricy (but worth it too I think). By getting this lens and defishing the pics (Hugin Freeware), I have by all accounts a pretty inexpensive ultra-wide angle lens for landscape photography (I would still prefer the Pany 7-14mm, but that's nearly 3 times the cost of this lens...) The only drawback that I can see for people getting this lens is that it's a manual focus lens (much like the Canon FD legacy lenses that I use so you have to shoot in manual mode without lens), but I don't have any issues with that and I find it a pleasure to be able to manually adjust my aperature where I want it anyways.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value My first fisheye lens- always wanted one but didn't want to spend the money on a novelty. However I wanted to get interiors of old churches and missions and this is the lens that can do that. Sharp, vibrant color and contrast, easy to use although it is a manual lens. Able to enhance the fisheye distortion or decrease it depending on how you level your camera. Good value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun, capable, manual control I'm very happy with this lens. (My first fisheye - micro four thirds mount.) Solid, inexpensive, and tiny. I find it complements my Olympus M.Zuiko 9-18mm quite well. De-fished, it can approximate a field of view well under 7mm, maybe even <5mm. I plan to use it in quite a variety of situations, especially indoors. A few observations:- This lens can be difficult to adjust. Its smallness means the two control rings (aperture and focus) are close together and close to the camera body. They are also quite stiff. Thankfully, I have small hands.- Focused to infinity, sharpness is lacking at f/3.5 and best at f/5.6. Diffraction seems to set in at smaller apertures.- Close focusing seems quite good. Lowest setting is 9 cm. Sharpness at 0.8 ft. seems excellent in the range f/3.5-f/8.- I have noticed only very slight chromatic aberration and lens flare with my Olympus E-M10. There can be some ghosting of bright lights toward the edges (a double image).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good glass for the price I bought this fisheye for fun, had a great time taking photos with a new perspective. The price is very reasonable. It is not the sharpest lens but very respectable. F stop of 3.5 is slow for inside a building or with movement. Size wise, it is perfect for micro 43, does not add much weight at all.
