Samyang 35mm f/1.4 Overview

The Canon EF mount Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens is a prime standard wide-angle lens designed for both full-frame and APS-C sized sensors; when used with an APS-C sensor the 35mm-equivalent focal length is 56mm. It is well-suited to working in a variety of situations ranging from landscape to portraiture. Its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is further beneficial to working in low-light conditions and for greater control over selective focus and shallow depth of field effects.

Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element have been incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations in order to produce sharper images. A UMC coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved light transmission and more contrast-rich imagery.

When used with full-frame image sensors, this lens' wide-angle perspective is well-suited to use in a broad array of conditions. When used with APS-C-sized sensors, this 56mm equivalent standard prime lens provides a similar field of view to normal vision.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and provides greater control over focus placement for shallow depth of field applications.
Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element reduce chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and clarity.
UMC coating improves light transmission and suppresses lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich, color-neutral images.

Samyang 35mm f/1.4 Reviews

Exactly what I was missing

This lens is very nice. It is sharp from F1.4 and all the way up. It is definitely heavy. It balances nicely on my K1 though, and while it is a little front heavy on my K3 it works very nicely on APSC. I bought it specifically to fill that gap of not having anything like a real fast 50 on APSC and it does not disappoint. But also because 35mm is my go to FL for landscapes with my K1 and this is very sharp, and I can use it on my Pentax film SLRs as well. Manual focusing through the OVF is made easy by going through the steps to do AF Fine Adjustment just like you would for an AF lens only you use the Apply All setting so you have to remember to set it for this lens when you put it on, and set it back to Apply One for your AF lenses when you put them on. Once tuned in the focus indicator in the OVF is just as reliably as for your AF lenses. Of course live view focusing also works and is great with focus peaking when super fine focusing is required. Overall I am quite happy. Build quality is good, focus ring is nice and smooth.

Best lense for video and pictures

I use this for video and I film in low lighting and it is absolutely perfect.

Unbeatable for the price, but...

In 2014, I bought the AE version of this lens as the first 35mm pairing for my Canon 6D. It quickly became my go-to lens for anything that didn't absolutely require AF. The bokeh quality, vignetting, and color rendition of this lens are unbelievable for such an affordable piece of glass. If this is near the top of your budget, buy this lens right now. Even with the manual focus and no stabilization, I'd rather shoot this lens over the plasticy, chromatic aberration-ridden Canon 35mm f/2 IS USM. Of course your own shooting conditions may make the Canon a better value with IS and AF, but for me, just walking around town or shooting posable scenes, this lens rocked. For a while that is.. A few weeks ago, I booked a trip for which I knew I wouldn't be able to comfortably hack it with my B+ manual focusing accuracy. Enter the champion, the legend, the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art. This Samyang blew me away two years ago, but the Sigma is in a league of it's own. I still have to tip my hat to Samyang for delivering such wonderful optics at such low prices. Not to mention the build quality feels better than lenses that cost twice as much. Samyang / Sigma Art sharpness, and chromatic aberration comparison image attached. The image speaks for itself. In the time that I've owned the Samyang, I'd guess I've taken around 16k-18k different photos through it. Different meaning re-focusing, so not including any exposure bracketing. 18k rotations of the focus ring is a lot I suppose, but I'd expect any decently made lens to be able to handle such a task without issue. The focus ring grip still looks brand new, and hasn't loosened on the barrel at all. I'm quite happy with that. However, the dampening mechanism has developed a crunch to it when focusing with any kind of speed. It's not a foreign debris issue either, it feels like the tolerances of the focus ring have loosened over time, resulting in a dampening slip. Unfortunately I can comment of the cost to repair this issue. I haven't had it repaired since the issue didn't affect focusing accuracy. The only other (superfluous) con to this lens I can think of is the omission of the red alignment dot on the barrel's exterior. Instead of the dot on the exterior of the lens, Samyang decided to imprint it into the face of the metal mount surface. Not a huge deal, but it's a bit awkward to look at the face of the mount and creep it toward the camera like you're looking for the remote under a couch or something. Coincidentally, one of three barrel screws in the exact spot the alignment dot would be on a Canon lens, I'm not sure if that gives any insight into why Samyang chose to move it from the normal position.

Great lens but

This is a great lens. I find that I love using it because of its 1.4 maximum aperture that allows me to use it for low-light situations. However, at 1.4, you have to be very calculating about the area you want in focus, because that depth of field is indeed shallow. I can't even compute how much but less than a pinky finger's thickness is right, probably a fraction of that. I purchased it because of its affordable price-point. However, I am returning it because it has opened my eyes to other f1.4 lenses that offer autofocus. Thank you, Samyang, for this opportunity - your product is a gateway for me to the world of fast lenses. I love the professional look this lens has offered me (shallow DoF, high-level detail from having a low maximum aperture, and overall excellent image-making quality). Only cons would be the manual-only focusing ability and the fact that the plastic rear end cap scratched easily, making me question the quality of the lens barrel.

I ordered this lens primarily for night and low light photography. My tests indicate that it is very well suited for those uses in addition to being a good lens for full-frame daytime work.

Great value lens - great image qualify

Really great lens as far as image quality is concerned, and a great value. This is my first fully manual lens, and I enjoy the novelty of setting the aperture and focus manually. The focus ring is a joy to use - it's very smooth and has a long range of movement. The lens body comes painted with a random textured pattern of small droplet-like bumps that I wasn't fond of at first, but maybe it will increase grip and be useful. The lens is a little large. I'd prefer a 35mm that had a flatter profile, but not if it means sacrificing image quality.

Great lens after focus adjust

I have had this lens for about at year. In the beginning I was disappionted with sharpness. Then I realizsed that even a manual fouuc lens needs AF-fine tune. After fine tuning it, it is a stunning change. Marvellous sharpness and great bokeh. Great for night-shots too. Yes, it is heavy but is worth it.

advice for manual lovers and bokeh maniacs (!!!)

I used this lens on 5d mark III for test.. And results were impressive... Especially chip set helps measurement perfectly and everything is much easier on get desired result on sharpness, vignetting and bokeh... Especially After 2.0 great sharpness and less vignetting, and very good bokeh... Amazing result I received and definetly advice that manual lens for different experience... Please my test shoots... ( no post production, just original, no extra light nor speedlight )

question

is it compatible with canon eos500N ( film camera / not digital ) ?
Asked by: mariela i.
Yes, the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Canon EF should be compatible for use on the Canon EOS 500N 35mm Film DSLR camera. Do note that this is a fully manual focus lens, so you will have to set the focus and aperture manually on the lens. You would have to use the camera in either Aperture-Priority or full Manual mode, as the Full Automatic, Time Value (Shutter-Priority) mode, and the Scene Modes will not work with a manual lens.

The focus throw is quite long on this lens. The benefit of the Cine version would be its follow focus gears, but we find both lens to be acceptable for versatile use.
