Polaroid PLPS overview

  • 1Description

What looks like a briefcase, travels in carry-on and weighs only 6.0 pounds? Believe it or not the answer is - a photo studio. The Polaroid Photo Studio Kit comes in a case measuring 17 x 16 x 3.5" with an ingenious design feature - the case is the studio.

It goes like this. The outside of the case has 3 pockets containing two 20W daylight-balanced quartz flood lights with built-in 10" stands concealing nifty legs that pop out of the stand column. Remove them and set them up - it takes seconds. Remove the camera base. It has a 10-17" range and is topped with a mini ball head with a 1/4"-20 camera mounting screw. You're now ready to open the portfolio-type case and lay it flat. Three captive 16 x 16" diffusion panels pop up from back of the case which now serves as your shooting base. Black, royal blue, red and white 16 x30" backdrops are included in the kit. Choose one, place the lights a few inches from the diffusion material and you're ready to shoot. It literally takes a minute to set up or break down the Photo Studio, so you can be on your way to photograph another item while others are still fiddling with their equipment.

The Photo Studio Kit is ideal for ecommerce, insurance or appraisal shots or jewelry and other objects d'art

    Polaroid PLPS reviews

Photo Studio Kit is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 89.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great value I got the photo studio kit when I was asked to photograph some antique miniatures for a nearby nonprofit consignment shop. With the included lights, it did a good job, but using a Nikon D700 required a separate tripod. The included camera stand is ONLY good for holding a compact camera, certainly no bigger than an ILC. OTOH, the kit is well designed for its purpose and nicely portable, so with the addition of a tripod, it did its intended job perfectly. If you are using a point-and-shoot, this item should be ideal for shooting items for on-line auctions or household inventories. Be careful: the lights are halogens and run hot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact and Fast Setup Nothing Spectacular about this item but it does what it says it will do. One of my concerns that wasn't stated int he ad was how much weight will the camera stand hold. I still don't the answer but I bought a table top tri-pod that will hold more thna 3 lbs to be on the safe side. Another word to the wise are the lights. Yes they do get hot and common sense says to give them time to cool down, however I had one of these lights years ago and the bulbs were difficult to replace at that time. I don't know if they still are or not. It would be nice if B&H offered the bulbs in their accessories listing as a help.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's ok. I am using this to take product photography. I am a artisan who makes small things so I always need to have something set up for photos. What I like about this setup is that it folds down into a case and the case is actually a part of the structure. It is also very easy to set up. The negatives of this kit is that the backdrops are creased where they are folded and I am not sure if the fabric can be ironed.... The lights are a little weak and a bit yellow, this can be fixed with white balance but would be better if they were nice pure white.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It would be OK if not terrible quality Just another tabletop studio product. Please do not let Polaroid name fool you - this is cheap Chinese made product of the worst kind. While box itself is of very reasonable quality, the parts which matter the most - camera mount and lights are not up to any standards. Lights are small and weak, camera mount is so weak, that it cannot mount small sony rx100 camera securely, so it won't move on its own... Just a shame that what used to be a great company lended their name to such a low quality product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No complaints for the price At only $, this is a great product. Sure, it could be better, but then it's going to cost more. Though one minor note, the backgrounds are just a hair too wide so that they wrinkle against the sides. They also ship folded, so it takes some careful ironing to get rid of the creases. Storing them rolled has solved that problem. The side lights are a little weak, and the camera support can't quite handle the weight of my DSLR, but a smaller camera would be fine. I just use my regular tripod and boost the light levels with some CFs in a clamp-on right from the hardware store. I use this for shooting product shots like microphones, and it works GREAT in this application

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Tabletop light box Shopping around, Polaroid does offer the same kit but without the lights for $10 less in other stores online. For us, this was the deal-maker and very excited to use it for macro product photography. Pros: -inexpensive and good value. -Simple set-up and it also comes with four backdrops. Everything folds up cleanly in portable carry case. So here are the borderline issues: -the lights run extremely hot and give off that heated electrical odor over time. It's a little unsettling and I may use ordinary full-spectrum spot lights instead. -the camera stand or more specifically, the camera stand ball-joint, is absolutely useless and cannot support the full weight of a DSLR. Only good for a small point & shoot. I would jerry-rig it with a more sturdy ball joint because the base is quite solid. -of course, the backdrops are folded and the creases show up in the photos. Recommend to steam iron them out before use. Overall, would recommend this to folks who want the convenience of a turn-key light box. I suspect that handy/DIY photographers will find the minuses a deal-breaker. More likely over time, folks could see themselves returning this. I'm on the fence so I can't fully recommend it yay or nay until I use it for a couple of weeks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Get out of it what you put in I use this kit for taking product shots for a small online store. The brightness of the lights leaves something to be desired, but if you're willing to play around and do some finagling, you can produce solid photos. I was initially disappointed by the evenness of the lighting because of their dimness, they need to be positioned very close to the diffuser but once I started adding additional lights (desk lamps and other fixtures from around the house), the quality jumped significantly, and I'm now very very satisfied with the results I'm getting. This isn't a pro kit, and its price reflects that, but if you're willing to put in some time and effort, the results are far better than what you'd get from building a kit from scratch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value I purchased this for a last minute jewelry shoot. I didn't want to drop a ton of cash and took a chance on it. I was not disappointed. Given the low price this kit is surprisingly nice. The pros: The outer case is very sturdy and quickly folds up for easy transport. The velcro backgrounds swap out with ease. It comes with blue, red, white and black backgrounds. I liked that the front is completely open and the sides swivel away easily allowing me to swap out products from the front rather than top.The cons: The included light stand is unusable for professional cameras. I tossed it in the trash and used my standard tripod. The empty space from the tossed stand in the carry case was handy for extra bulbs and an extension cord. The lights get VERY hot and are hard to adjust without getting burned. There was no information included about the bulbs. I had to pull one out to discover they are GU10 50 watt halogen bulbs that can be purchased inexpensively. The light output was less than I expected but easily remedied with the right camera settings. This kit should work well for most products. For jewelry shoots I recommend adding a diamond dazzler bulb in front to give the jewels extra sparkle but I didn't have time to get one and made due with just this kit. I used a clear acylic scrapbooking sheet (purchased at craft store) on top of the background to add a reflection to the product.Overall, a good product.
