Bolt VX-760 overview

  • 1Description

The VX-760N Wireless TTL Flash for Nikon from Bolt is a dedicated flash for use with Nikon cameras that support shoe mount flash. The VX-760N features a guide number of 164' at ISO 100 and an adjustable tilt head with six positions: -7 to 90°. The -7° downward tilt allows you to fully illuminate your subject when shooting close-up. You can also twist it to the left up to 90° and to the right up to 180°. It covers a 24-180mm range (in 35mm full frame format) and extends to 18-180mm with the diffuser panel in place. In auto mode the zoom range is stepless, it does not set at 24mm, 35mm, etc, but matches the exact focal length of the zoom lens for optimal lighting. The flash supports rear curtain synchronization for shooting at slower shutter speeds. The VX-760N is equipped with wireless (optical pulse) manual and full TTL master and slave functions. It can operate on 4 distinct channels and in up to 3 wireless groups.

The VX-760N has an autofocus assist for low-light photography and an automatic power-saving function that turns the flash off when it's inactive. It is powered by four AA batteries (not included), with a flash duration between 1/800 and 1/20,000 of a second. A convenient HV port allows you to connect the flash to an external power source, such as the Bolt Cyclone, for extended usage and faster recycling. The included stand allows you to set the flash up on a flat surface or to attach it to a tripod head, light stand, or clamp that has a standard 1/4"-20 mount.

This on-camera flash is fully compatible with Nikon i-TTL.
The VX-760N features full manual and full TTL wireless remote master and slave functions via wireless optical pulse transmission. Up to four channels (1, 2, 3 and 4) can be utilized so that master transmits only to designated slaves on the same channel. As slaves and masters, the VX-760N can be assigned to any one of three groups (A, B or C) and the mode and power set separately for each group.
Multi (stroboscopic) mode allows the flash to fire multiple times during one single exposure. This is useful to capture fast moving subjects or can provide multiple images of the subject moving through the frame.
The guide number for this flash is 164' (50 m) at 50mm and ISO 100.
The adjustable six-position flash head can be tilted up -7-90°, left 0-90° and right 0-180°. It has an automatic and manual 24-180mm zoom head.
FV Lock, Red-eye Reduction and Flash Exposure Bracketing are supported if your specific Nikon camera has those functions.
The 2.0" rear backlit LCD Display allows you to easily make adjustments in low light and clearly see what your flash is set to for accurate readings.
With eight different manual power levels you can easily change from full to 1/128 power and fine tune your levels in increments of 1/3.
With a built-in autofocus-assist beam you can shoot in low-light conditions, using the beam to aid your camera's AF modes.
A PC sync terminal and included 12" cable allows you to easily shoot with the VX-760N off of the camera for increased versatility.
An HV port on the side of the flash allows you to connect the VX-760N to an external power source for extended use and for faster recycling time. The connection for the HV port is a Canon CZ-type.
This flash supports rear-curtain sync
A built-in reflector allows you to enhance the light coming from your flash and the diffuser panel, which extends the flash range to wide-angle 18mm, also softens the light for more flattering shadows and images.
Lock mode prevents inadvertent operation of the flash unit and overheating protection mode offers warnings when the flash is operating continuously with a chance of overheating and will temporarily disable the flash if temperatures are too high.
The automatic power-saving function turns the flash off to conserve power, allowing you to shoot longer

    Bolt VX-760 reviews

VX-760N Wireless TTL Flash for Nikon Cameras is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value I have two Nikon SB-600 flash units but decided to try out this unit by Bolt. I've now used it twice with my Nikon D800 and it has worked just like a Nikon unit on TTL. The wide range of settings this unit allows should please any photographer at every level. The manual that comes with the unit describes all the various settings in great detail. The construction of the unit is solid and I expect it will last a long time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent...but I've had this flash for years and it's been an excellent and trusted piece of gear for almost all that time. It is powerful and has lot's of modifications for a wide variety of shooting situations. The i-TTL works great with all three of my Nikon bodies. Here's the "but." When I last tried to use it, the plastic battery cover which is spring-loaded to hold the batteries in securely, broke. A tiny plastic flange snapped. Now, I have to hold the battery cover closed with electrical tape. I'm sad that this is how my VX-760N is going to experience the end of its life. Without this problem, I would have rated it five stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Doesn't have to be name brand to perform Purchased this product at last minute to ensure I had what I needed for the first wedding I photographed. I have the Nikon D7000, so I didn't need the flash in the church, but at the reception, it was the best..Takes some time to learn the settings and I still have some practicing, but from my standpoint, you get a lot of bang for the buck with this flash; especially compared to the Nikon brand flash that is comparable and cost about twice as much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Generic Bought this flash over a brand name because of other reviews and its similar specifications. Thanks to one-day shipping I was able to order at the last minute and use it for New Years Eve. It performed perfectly straight out of the box on automatic (as I really did not have time to learn all the controls). It's been a great performer on a few subsequent uses as well. I expect it to be a very useful addition to my photo equipment.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bolt should read thumb tack Thought I would try one of these. I never thought it would reach the 164 guide # but I thought, hey, if it hits 110, it would still be a great buy at 269.00. Got the flash and was very impressed with the quality of build -- sturdy. Very professionally packaged with a good instruction book. Metal foot added to the value. Out of the box I was ready to give it a 4.5 rating. Then I took the bounce head out of the box -- does not fit the flash to where it can be carried in the pouch mounted on the flash -- go to 4 out of 5. Then I tested it with my trusty Minolta IV meter -- a full two stops less power than an SB800! I tried several ways -- on auto, on full manual 1/1 -- hey, it just does not measure up. Go from 4 to 3. I was about to put it away when I thought, hey, test it against the old SB600 I have. Yep, still 1/2 stop less powerful than the SB600! Go from 3 to 2. Ok, so it can be set as a master flash and the SB600 can't, so maybe a 2 1/2. For a flash I would rate 2.5 out of 5, I would spend the extra 75.00 and go for the SB700. The SB700 comes with a filter set also and the Bolt doesn't -- ok, so maybe a 2.25 out of 5!.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just quit on me i am a weekend photographer so i really dont use my flash a lot. if in mot mistaken i have used it about 6 times since i bought it. well this week end I was trying to take pictures of some decorations at a party i was going to shoot and the flash worked twice then just stopped working. thank God i had a back up flash my trusty Nikon 600. the reason i bought this flash was because of the power pack and the need for more power. well it failed me. yes i bought the warranty but it is still under the manufacturers warranty. i called them and they want me to send it to them and told me it could take 4 to 6 weeks to get my flash back. i have a photo shoot this week. and to top it off they do not pay for the shipping. i am to threw with bolt i will save my money and deal with nikon from now on

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Done Very good flash. Not all the bells and whistles of a Nikon flash but at this price point I can't find better. Very similar to Nikon in terms of feel and build quality.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from First flash I mostly shoot landscape so I don't use flash much but picked one up maybe to expand a little into portraiture. Honestly I wish I would have spent the extra dough and got the Nikon sb700. This flash has worked for me though. Still can't figure out how to get the wireless sub commander mode to work.
