Sonnet ECHOPRO-E34 overview

  • 1Description

The Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter from Sonnet connects with Thunderbolt technology equipped computers. The Thunderbolt technology speeds up to 10 Gbps and it supports high-resolution displays as well as high-performance data devices through a single, compact port. This adapter expands Thunderbolt connectivity to support more than just storage systems and monitors. You can add an ExpressCard/34 slot to any computer through this adapter. This enables you to use a wide variety of ExpressCard/34 cards to add a range of interfaces and capabilities to your system.

The adapter allows you to add FireWire ports or an eSATA interface to your setup. This supports hot-swapping which helps you to select and change the ExpressCard as per your need. Most Sonnet ExpressCard/34 cards (with a PCIe interface), such as Sonnet FireWire interfaces, CompactFlash and SDXC card readers, select eSATA controllers, interface cards for Qio CF4 and Qio E3 pro media readers and ExpressCard 2.0 are also supported.

The adapter boosts specialty adapters like RME's HDSPe ExpressCard and interface cards for the AJA io Express as well as the Matrox MX02 family. Install Sony's latest SxS driver* thus enabling support for Sony SxS memory card. This card is used in Sony's popular XDCAM EX line of professional HD camcorders and the ARRI ALEXA line of digital cameras. With the added capability to read SxS, SxS Pro and SxS-1 cards, it is the high speed SxS memory card reader. It enables Thunderbolt technology equipped Mac computers to read SxS cards at over 400 MB/s.

Note: * Sony's Thunderbolt technology-compatible SxS driver for Mac OS X may be downloaded from this Sonnet support link.

The Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter enables you to use ExpressCard/34 adapters with Thunderbolt technology equipped computers to expand your computer's connectivity and capabilities.
This adapter ingests footage from SxS memory cards at up to 400 MB/s.
It features high-performance 10 Gbps Thunderbolt technology, 5.0 Gbps ExpressCard 2.0 or 2.5 Gbps ExpressCard interface.
The adapter supports common ExpressCard/34 adapters as well as Sonnet Pro CompactFlash and SDXC readers; FireWire and selected eSATA adapters.
It also enables use of Qio CF4 and Qio E3 pro media readers in computers which are Thunderbolt technology enabled.
The Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter supports ExpressCard adapters for specialty devices such as AJA io Express and Prism Sound ADA-8XR and Orpheus.

    Sonnet ECHOPRO-E34 reviews

Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful It is as described. I needed something to utilize the thunderbolt on my laptop with eSATA RAIDs and dock to back up footage while in the field. This gives much better throughput than FW800. Uses it with the dual eSATA ExpressCard/34 Expansion Card. Only one gripe, and not sure if its this adapter or the Expansion Card, but the insertion is a push in to lock, then push in again to unlock and pull out. However, the lock doesn't work very well, and you don't even have to push it in to unlock it, you can very easily just pull it out. Be careful! To be safe, I gaff tape it all together to avoid accidentally ejection of the expansion card.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from works for Sony SxS cards, but not for Hoodman cards ? I have a new MacBook Pro with thunderbolt input. I bought this Sonnet Echo Pro to read a Sony SxS card and Hoodman adapted SxS cards. After finding a software driver and installing it, my Sonnet Echo Pro works well with the Sony SxS card. However, I cannot even get my Hoodman cards to appear as an available drive on the screen. What to do ? These SxS cards were written by a Sony EX3 about two years back. They have been read successfully on my old MacBook Pro and by the camera itself. So, my opinion on the Sonnet Echo Pro is not good. John Woods

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great option for me. I am a video editor and I have 4 12TB ESATA G Drives that I have been filling up with video and graphic files for the past 3 years. I absolutely had to upgrade my editing rig and these adapters have allowed me to keep editing with my G Drives with no hiccups. The adapter card that you must pair with these does not sit as tightly and securely as I may have hoped. My advice is to find as permanent a location in your work area as you can, connect everything and then try not to nudge them. ESATA cables are a bit stiff so it may take some time to find the sweet spot as far as positioning. Also, my iMac only has a few thunderbolt slots on the back, so I do have one of these daisy chained with a Lacie 10TB thunderbolt drive, and I've not had problems with drives being recognized as of yet.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Compatibility problems Works great for SxS cards but I haven't been able to get it to work with My Sonnet eSata Express Card adaptor, which is primarily why I bought it. I was in touch with Sonnet tech support and ran all the diagnostics and power calibrations they recommended for my MBPr but to no avail. The tech support rep became unresponsive after that. Disappointing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! ...but two wishes Amazing speed! I use two of these for offloading Sony SxS cards to RAID drives via my Retina Macbook Pro. My first wish would be a second Thunderbolt port so they can be daisy chained (I'm using Thunderbolt drives too and the MBP has only two ports). My second, more important wish (and the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars), is that there is no cover of any kind for the slot opening. I use these in the field not in an office and am very concerned about the amount of dust that might get into the device. I use paper tape to cover and seal the front of the unit when it's not in use. A spring loaded flap like on laptop ExpressCard slots would be best, but even a manual flap or rubber plug for the front would be helpful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from SxS Transfer at Thunderbolt Speeds My company has several of these adapter/readers as we use SxS cards in several Sony cameras. The best part about this adapter is the price. The average for a Sony version that does either USB 3 or Thunderbolt is almost $$. It transfers fast and easy. You may need to update your SxS drivers to make sure you can see it. I love that it doesn't need external power making it great for transfers in the field.Cons are that there is no Thunderbolt cable provided and, truth be told, this time I bought one of these because the last one died on us with no reason why.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality, read the fine print! This adapter works great and as advertised by Sonnet. It works seamlessly with thunderbolt. I bought the Pro version of this product thinking it is backwards compatible with the non pro versions of eSATA express cards, reading the fine print made me realize it is not compatible with every non pro cards, only some. Not going to ding it a star for my ignorance although would of been nice to make that more noticeable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast and a great value For a long, long, long time, my options for ingesting Sony XDCAM SxS media was always USB 2, so it was slow. Recently Sony came out with a newer USB3 bus-powered SxS card reader, however it is much more expensive than the Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt reader. It's super fast; as fast as the SxS media can go, and it's also bus-powered. A perfect solution for editing on my MBPR at a very reasonable price. In order for my MBPR to see the SxS media card, I had to download the Sony XDCAM driver for Mac, and it was easy and solid.
