SxS Transfer at Thunderbolt Speeds

By Trevor

My company has several of these adapter/readers as we use SxS cards in several Sony cameras. The best part about this adapter is the price. The average for a Sony version that does either USB 3 or Thunderbolt is almost $$. It transfers fast and easy. You may need to update your SxS drivers to make sure you can see it. I love that it doesn't need external power making it great for transfers in the field.Cons are that there is no Thunderbolt cable provided and, truth be told, this time I bought one of these because the last one died on us with no reason why.

Some assembly required

Depending on your Mac, you'll need to download the required drivers. Scared me for a minute when I tried to plug the reader in having not installed them and nothing happened...once I installed them, A+ in terms of speed and usefulness.

QUICK

It just works. can't be better than that, right? plug. play. shooting more and more XAVC at 100mbps and files are getting bigger....this really cuts down transfer times when coupled with Thunderbolt offload drives.

USB 2.0 to Thunderbolt - with every dollar

Load footage on the fly, with a client, or back at home. I've put off buying something like this for a couple of years, and I'm glad I have one now. It loads the SxS Pro cards so fast, that I can edit with the client minutes after shooting, and it looks a lot more professional than connecting the camera to my laptop. This is a solid piece of gear for a great price.

question

Will a P2 card reader with a S x S card adapter work!
Asked by: David
I've never heard of that; Panasonic's P2 format is different than Sony's SxS (XDCAM) format, of course, and although P2 was a good format, it's very old now; probably considered legacy however SxS is still used in more recently manufactured Sony and also JVC cameras. Bottom line, haven't seen such a device, but if you're still using P2, I would search for a dedicated P2 card reader, or use the Panasonic acquisition tool, (camera), as the reader via USB
