The M3 Quick Release Camera End - XLR 7-F to Dual XLR 3-M, 3.5mm Return and Tap from Peter Engh is a breakaway cable to connect the camera audio inputs to field mixer or recorder outputs using an XLR 7-pin connector "break point." The cable system also sends a monitor return back to the mixer, and provides a monitor headphone tap for the camera operator.

The camera end features two XLR 3-pin male connectors that terminate in an XLR 7-pin female connector. The return monitor signal is available on a right-angle male 1/8" (3.5 mm) TRS connector, while the camera operator tap is a female 1/8" (3.5 mm) stereo TRS connector.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality Cables This is the camera side of a two piece breakaway cable system that I use to connect my Sound Devices 702 Recorder to my Sony NEX FS100 Camera. Cable is well made and color labeled to insure you route the correct channels between camera and recorder. On the recorder/mixer side, I use the Peter Engh M3 Quick Release Mixer End, which attaches to this cable and the camera. The cable provides for receiving line output from the recorder to the camera and also provides a headphone send back to the recorder/mixer end were you or audio person can be sure that the signal is reaching the camera as well as the recorder (note for this setup, camera needs to be setup to receive line output vs. microphone output). Setup and use of a breakaway cable is well described in Ty Ford's Audio Bootcamp Field Guide, also available from B&H. The complete setup provides for receiving the same signal at the camera as provided to the recorder and/or mixer. Setup makes syncing dual audio with camera a snap. Also provides redundancy of recorded audio (always a good idea) and provides better quality audio to the camera than what is obtained with the on camera microphone. This system is working great for me. It is another important step to bringing your audio quality to a level that your HD video deserves.
