Behringer FCA1616 overview

  • 1Description

The Behringer Firepower FCA1616 is a 16x16 FireWire/USB 2.0 audio/MIDI interface that offers a rich feature set and plentiful I/O options for a surprisingly low price. The unit sports 4 front-panel mic/instrument combo jacks—equipped with Behringer's top-of-the-line XENYX microphone preamps—as well as 4 balanced line inputs, 8 balanced line outputs, and MIDI in and out jacks on the rear-panel.

Digital I/O includes TOSlink optical in and out connectors, which support up to 8 channels of ADAT, 4 channels of S/MUX, or 2 channels of S/PDIF. A pair of RCA jacks are also included for S/PDIF. When both analog and digital I/O are utilized, the unit is capable of streaming 16 inputs and 16 outputs simultaneously. If you want to expand the channel count, the optional Behringer ADA8000, an 8-Channel A/D and D/A converter equipped with 8 mic preamps and an ADAT interface, can be easily integrated.

Each front-panel input channel is equipped with an input-level control knob, a 48V phantom power switch, a switch for a low-cut filter (great for preventing the pickup of low-end rumble), and a Hi-Z switch with an LED indicator. When activated, the Hi-Z switch sets the input to handle high-impedance sources like guitars and basses.

The FCA1616 features direct hardware monitoring, allowing you to monitor as you record without distracting latency delay. The Direct Monitoring knob lets you smoothly crossfade between the direct signal and the one returning from the DAW. The two headphone outputs offer source-select options, and each has its own volume control.

The unit is equipped with a variety of useful LED meters and status lights to give you visual feedback during recording. A master level knob lets you control the level going to your studio monitors. The FCA1616 runs on AC power (an AC adapter is included), but can also be bus powered via a 6-pin FireWire cable, contingent upon a computer that feeds sufficient power.

Purchasers of the Firepower FCA1616 are eligible to download a huge software bundle from It includes Audacity (the most popular open-source audio editor); and a great selection of podcasting software: Podifier, Juice, Podnova, and Golden Ear.

    Behringer FCA1616 reviews

    Firepower FCA1616 - 16x16 USB/FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface with ADAT is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sounds great; Installs fast; Exceeds! Solidly made product, This is part of my video production studio, supporting stereo and 5.1 sound monitoring and voice over recording. My primary software application used is Sony Vegas 11. I attach the audio through the ASIO drivers. Sound is excellent. Design is straightforward and relatively simple. Drivers were easy to install on Windows 7. I wish that the unit had a power switch on the front panel. It would also be great if I could monitor the mic inputs directly and the internal connections were more routable. In all, a great product at a very good price point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Product Replaced another older interface with the Behringer. Wish I could have done it sooner. I have a small home studio and use the Behringer as my only interface. My latency problem is gone thanks to the firewire connection. I have enough inputs for everything I need and the two headphone outputs are a plus. The quality on this unit is very nice. Has a nice look to it. I just can't believe the features and quality for the price. Very clean sounding, no coloration, distortion or hum at all. I really can't think of anything negative about it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great piece of gear, literature lacking We had a Behringer ADA 8000 with ADAT out going into an old MOTU 828 which just didn't light up anymore one day, so we replaced it with this unit. I was tearing my hair out at first until I did a bunch of Googling and pieced this information together from a few different forums: on the FCA1616, to get ADAT signal from an external ADAT compatible device into the FCA1616 will require the use of two optical cables. 1. Connect the ADAT OUTPUT of the FCA1616 to the ADAT INPUT of the external ADAT compatible device. Have this device set to SLAVE.2. Now, connect the ADAT OUTPUT of the external ADAT compatible device to the ADAT INPUT of the FCA1616.3. You will then select ADAT using the DIGITAL SELECT BUTTON on the front of the FCA1616. Give the unit just a few seconds to sync up properly. The FCA1616 will need to be the master device in this particular configuration. Set the external ADAT compatible device to external sync, with the FCA1616 being the master clock. On the Mac, you can access its settings in the Audio/MIDI setup, found in the Utilities folder in Applications. The manual they include is pretty much just drawings with labels.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Time will tell.. Behringer 64bit Firmware update tool was unable to update which rendered the Firewire connection useless and ADAT simply would not keep the ADA8200 sync for many seconds. After having spoken with Behringer Music group support, B&H agreed to exchange both units. They recently arrived and where both configured (Win10) Watched a movie, listening to the FCA1616 through my M-Audio 3 way Studio Monitor/Sub system then went onto configuring them with Samplitude ProX2, everything works, except back in Win10's playback Device thingie it WILL not even play the Test Tone and I can clearly hear occational Pop & carckle (remember the Serial?) but I'm fairly certain it's I who need to set the NEW Behringer AISO buffer thingies better in the FCA1616 Control panel.. Thankfully I have AVID's Eleven Rack and NI's Komplete Audio 6 as backup units, and NI's Interface does NOT crackle, not even when turning the Workstation on/off.. :D

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Combo FCA1616/ADA8200 Two particular problem was solved earlier today after recieving a replacement for my FCA1616/ADA8200 (due to ADAT/FCA1616 Firmware upgrade issues). The remedy was unusually rather logical / simple unlike my NI Komplete Ultimate re install after Win 7 changed my Drive letter back from G: to H:?! Only a clean install could remedy that mess. But regarding the FCA1616 1934 driver.. First I went to Programs and Features (Control panel) where I uninstalled(!) the offending driver (which i my case was the FCA1616 1394 Fire-wire driver). After having removed it I first reinstalled the most recent 1394 driver then the lastest Firmware update from Behringer Site. The ASIO Buffer Control panel is somewhat new to me and needed a bit of mocking about with in order to remove nasty crackle & pop's etc. Works like a Charm now (even after reboot). Also i noticed that if I test the FCA 1616 ADAT I can see it's playing all Eight out's (just happens to be configured as 7.1 in Windows speaker configuration. I connected 1 XLR out from the first ADAT out to one of my Studio Monitors and it worked.. This would suggest that I might(!) be able to use 2, 4, 6 or 8 speakers in some sort of surround configuration for playback within Windows don't know about Netflix Dolby Digital etc, but I'm fair;ly certain it would work with JetAudio which happens to be my preferred Audio Video player, Period.. Hope that helped you somewhat, I know it's hard work to re-build your workstation when ever a new OS comes out. This time I keep not 1, 2, 3, or 4 but 5 restore images on separate Hard drives and I'm using the new sticky Notes on my screen to easily keep track of my progress.. :) Carl.. I've out over a week's work into my manual clean Win 10 installation and I'm near finished configuring it. Gone are all the Blue screen crashes (Win 7 / 8.1).. Let's see how well it works in regards to Windows 10 new forced update policies, I've already had to reinstall the drivers for my AMD FIREPRO W7100 GPU card etc.. But the Behringer FCA1616 / ADA8200 combo works OK now both from Windows and from within our excellent new Samplitude Pro X2 DAW..
