Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Cover all your bases with the extremely versatile E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens from Sony for your APS-C-format E-mount camera. By providing a 27-300mm equivalent zoom range, users can capture subjects both near and far without needing to swap out their lenses, making it ideal for travel. It also benefits from the use of two extra-low dispersion and four aspherical elements to minimize aberrations. Furthermore, it is equipped with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization that will reduce the impact of camera shake, especially at longer focal lengths.

For fast focusing, the 18-200mm uses a linear autofocus motor with an internal focus design that permits focusing as close as 1.6'. It also has a zoom lock switch on the lens barrel to prevent zoom creep when the lens is not in use. Additionally, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm to produce smooth, rounded bokeh.

Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 18-200mm offers users a vast wide-angle to super telephoto range equivalent to 27-300mm.
A variable f/3.5-6.3 maximum aperture helps keep the lens' overall size and weight to a minimum.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Four aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
A linear autofocus motor and internal focus mechanism contribute to faster, more responsive focusing in both stills and video. Also, the lens features a minimum focus distance of 1.6' and it does not change in length when changing focus.
A zoom lock switch prevents the lens barrel from accidentally extending when not in use.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

    E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent travel lens I have used this lens on an NEX-7 body for almost two years. It is an ideal all-purpose lens for a traveler who prefers to carry a single lens to cover most shooting situations. In my opinion, carrying a lens bag with multiple lenses negates the advantage of traveling with a small mirrorless camera. Image quality is surprisingly good for a zoom lens with an 11x zoom factor. I use this lens for outdoor daytime photography of mostly stationary subjects (predominantly cityscapes and landscapes), and have not noticed the slow focusing described in other reviews; the lens I have used acquires sharp focus quickly. I cannot address its performance for action photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Wide-range Zoom Discussion in the TalkEMount photo forum had me a little worried about this lens and its possibility of being soft at the extreme end (200mm). I was pleasantly surprised however that it is crystal clear in this case with my Sony a6000. Its zoom lock is very useful, and the zoom is smooth and easy when unlocked. It is a little large for a small camera like the ILCE E-mounts, but given its wide range (18 - 200mm) in good light it dispences the need for other lenses to be carried. Its focusing after major focal length changes can be slow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Travel Star I wanted a lightweight, compact, versatile, good quality camera and lens to use when I didn't want to lug around my big system. I found the camera in the Sony NEX 5N and I found the lens in the new 18-200mm. Is it super sharp? No, but pretty darn good. Is it blazing fast? No, but it is adequate. Fits on-camera in a small case light enough to wear on a belt and have with you all the time. If you find yourself not taking your gear because of the size/weight/hassle, take a look at this combination (although I'm sure this lens will be a great addition to any e-mount camera).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality, slow focusing I bought this lens for my new little take everywhere Sony A6000, which has been quite impressive as a camera you can throw in the car, a backpack, or your purse, and pull it out to shoot at a moments notice. The quality of the images taken with this lens is great, but it tends to search a lot, and sometimes won't even focus. I've just started using it, so maybe it's just me, but the lag time doesn't make me happy. When Sony finally makes a Zeiss lens to go with this camera, specifically one that will go from wide angle to super telephoto, I'm in. Because there's nothing else available in this size, I would recommend it to someone who needs a travel camera, and doesn't want to carry more than one lens.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OK lens I bought this lens thinking it would be a good all-in-one travel lens. 2 days later, after testing it out around my house, I returned it. It's not a great lens. It's not a terrible lens. It's an OK lens. Colors do not pop, images are not sharp, contract is on the low side, and it's a bit washed out looking in low light. True - it's more versatile than a point-and-shoot or smart phone camera, but if you won't be happy with just OK, then this is not the lens for you. If you're willing to pay a bit more, and don't mind a narrower zoom range, check out Sony's 16-70mm f/4 OSS Lens. THIS is a great lens. And with the extra digital zoom available on Sony cameras, you'll more than make up for what you lose by not getting the 18-200.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Pleased With This Purchase :-) We're planning a long trip overseas. I'm planning to take my a6000 for packing and space considerations. I have several of the f/2.8 Sigma prime e-mount lenses (small and quite good!), but wanted a versatile zoom as well. Found a like-new lens at B&H which was delivered on time and very well packed (!) today. Have been out and about shooting at all focal lengths. Great color, detail, focus. Just the smallest bit of loss of focus at the edges out at 200mm. But really, that's a nit-pick.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as good as the original. This lens is not close to the original Sony in performance. The AF is slower and at times non existing with low light. Tried both side by side for three days. Worst part is the softness at the 200 end. Very soft in the center. Did not run any tests with corner sharpness for either. Size wise is so close to the original that can't see how it would make a difference getting this one over the other. About same price, two ounces heavier and same length. Hope this helps with your decision Regards al

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worthy Addition In the world of super zoom this is better than most. Yes it grows to absurd lengths and yes it is slow but no worse that the other comparable on the market. Images are crisp, sharp (relative to what the limitations of this type of lens are) and the IS works well. It also is amazingly light and well balanced.
