Oben AC-1461 overview

  • 1Description

The Oben AC-1461 4-Section Aluminum Tripod with BA-117 Ball Head provides reliable support for DSLRs, point-and-shoot cameras or video cameras up to 17.6 lb.

The tripod's four-section legs are fabricated from high tensile strength aluminum. It rises to a maximum height of 69" with the center column fully extended and folds down to 23.8" for transport. Flip locks on the legs facilitate rapid setup and break down. Three leg angles: normal (80°), low (55°) and extra low (24°) are available via angle adjustment tabs at the joint of each leg. You can reverse the column with a twist of the butterfly knob or split it in two and use the short column for macro and low angle shooting as low as 9.3" from the ground. Any combination of leg angles can be combined to accommodate uneven terrain, stairs or obstructions. A built-in bubble level helps you square up your compositions. For extra stability the center column employs a spring-loaded counterbalance hook.

The included BA-117 ball head features a single-action knob that controls its rotation and 360 degree panning while a robust ball-locking mechanism secures it solidly. The head's four bubble levels ensure accurate panoramas. The BA-117's built-in quick release comes with a camera plate that features a standard 1/4"-20 screw and a retractable, removable video pin to provide additional stability for camcorders. Since the head is removable, locking screws underneath the collar thwart torsion when re-attaching. The tripod comes with a carry case and shoulder strap for storage and transport.

Center column can be separated into 2 parts to give you a short column for low angle and macro work
Center column is grooved to prevent rotation
Spring-loaded counterweight hook is located at the bottom of the center column
Leg cushions on 2 legs provide a firm grip in cold or wet weather
Tripod features reversible 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 screw to fit almost any head
Angle adjustment locks keep legs at the chosen angles
Angled rubber feet for maximum contact with the ground
Two included Allen keys attach to a tripod leg, so you're always ready to tighten components
Padded carry bag provides a snug fit for the tripod/head combination and features two heavy-duty zippers, an interior pocket with a zipper, and a shoulder strap

    Oben AC-1461 reviews

AC-1461 4-Section Aluminum Tripod with BA-117 Ball Head is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great buy for the money! This combo kit is great for the money. Although the ball head isn't the greatest, smoothest head it's still well worth the money. The tripod is really sturdy and easy to use. If I had the option to change the head I would with a multi-knob more functional ball head, but again for the money this combo kit is hard to beat. Great for photography, not so smooth for video and the panning isn't great with the single knob function. Overall I would highly recommend this for photographers not so much for videography. Oh yeah it comes with a great carrying case all within a great budget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good stable tripod I mainly use this tripod for back country sports shoots. It has great stability, strong construction and not too heavy for an aluminum tripod. The ball head is very stable and has a positive lock even when I'm shooting with a 400mm lens. The jury is still out on how well it holds up over time, but for now I'm very pleased.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Oben AC-1461 with BA-117 head I bought 2 of these Tripods for use with a dynamic perception zero slider. Since I was using them to support a slider bar I only needed a simple ball head and that is what the BA-117 is. These tripods are well made and the legs lock firmly. I really like the reversible center stem, I can hang my entire slider system upside down to get my camera so that it just clears the ground , this makes for really nice slider perspective. I am only giving this combination a 3 star rating to alert photographers to the fact that you can not lock your camera down and then pan the camera on the head, not because of the quality which is very good. In order to be able to do panoramas the Oben BE-117 or similar head should be purchased. That head has separate turn screws for locking down the camera and panning. I also purchased the Oben BB-0 head which is an excellent head that has tension control for locking down the camera and still being able to move it to any position with your hands and when you lt go the camera does not move.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Plenty of Positives... A Few Negatives. The Positives: A well-made unit with first-rate construction that is easy to carry and set up, especially if the light is changing quickly -- and the flip-locks provide this capability. The weight/support numbers were primary reasons for my purchase (nice price, too). Decent support... The Negatives: ...Decent support until the camera is a Canon 5d with a supplemental battery grip and 70-200mm lens and you want to change from horizontal to vertical shooting. The problems I found started with the 1/4-20 thread mount D-ring (attachment point to the camera/tripod head) needs to be larger in order, for me anyway, to get a tighter connection. Once the camera was in vertical mode, it drooped badly. The 'load' specification may take horizontal camera placement into account only. The single lever on the head itself controls both the camera rotation (pan) and horizontal/vertical positions. Not a stellar design solution. There really should be separate knobs for each function -- if you're in 'vertical mode' and wish to pan the scene, it's difficult to maintain a constant level. Though 'okay', the tripod didn't inspire a lot of confidence when my camera was mounted and in use. I would gladly recommend this tripod IF a lighter load was used. Thankfully I purchased the tripod from B&H and have an RMA already and will be returning the thing and go back to shopping for a replacement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have Getting back into photography after sitting out most of the digital age. Everyone told me my first accessory purchase should be a tripod so here it is. Very well built and easy to set up and take down. Haven't used it on uneven ground but I can say it is rock solid in windy conditions. Not the lightest tripod out there but considering it can support over 17lb and it extends to over 6' I was expecting it to be a tank. Not so at all. So far so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quite impressed with this Oben product Although used for a brief time, based on previous experience the Oben Tripod AC-1461 with BA-117 Ball Head works very well & works as promised. The price paid is consistent with an excellent value as well. Currently used with my point&shoot but expect to upgrade (thus reason for the 17.6 lbs. support capability). Very stable, highly maneuverable & easy to carry. Appears sturdy enough to last a long time. What more can one ask for?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good, sturdy tripod Since I'm fairly new to serious amateur photography, I initially hesitated to spend this much for a tripod, but it was recommended to me by an instructor of mine. I'm glad I did. I had a cheaper tripod and managed to strip one of the adjustments while on a photo shoot. This is much more substantial and easier to manipulate while out taking pictures.
