Oben CT-3551 overview

  • 1Description

The CT-3551 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-113T Ball Head from Oben is a sturdy yet lightweight tripod with 5-section legs that fold upward 180° to create an extremely compact package for transport – with the included head attached, folded length is only 16". For further versatility, one of the legs unscrews from the chassis and attaches to the head & center column to form a working-height monopod. With a system load capacity of 13.2 lb, the tripod and head ensure a stable base for many DSLR body/lens combinations.

With the five leg sections and the center column extended, the maximum height of the tripod with the head is 62.4". The legs are non-rotating, which enables single-handed operation of the rubber twist locks on each leg: One twist of the wrist, and the four leg stages descend. Each leg is independently adjustable, and they can be locked securely at three different angles. The tripod's feet feature rubber tips that can be removed to reveal metal spikes, allowing you to shoot both indoors and outdoors on any terrain.

To shoot in monopod mode, simply unscrew the leg that forms the base of the monopod, remove the center column from the chassis, and screw these two elements together. With the head & center column mounted on the extended leg, you have a full size monopod that's even taller than the tripod at full height.

Like the legs, the center column features a twist lock that frees up its extension and retraction. For protection when it's retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper that protects the center-post collar. At the bottom of the center column is a spring-loaded ballast hook that allows you to attach a counterweight for extra stability. The detachable hook doubles as a stopper for the center column, which can be removed and reversed for low-angle shooting.

The BE-113T head features one locking knob for the ball and a separate knob to control the 360° panning. This enables fast setup changes, and frees you to keep a finger on the shot trigger while you're making a quick adjustment to the head's orientation. The head has a 90° notch which facilitates shooting in portrait orientation. Two bull's eye bubble levels ensure your camera is level on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

The included Arca-type quick release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw. The quick release plate has two safety screws to prevent the camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft.

This tripod also includes a fitted, padded carry case with a removable shoulder strap, two heavy-duty zippers, and an interior zipper pocket. A tool clip with two hex wrenches for adjusting the center column and the leg joints is also included. It snaps onto any of the tripod legs for easy access.

Reverse-Folding Legs
The legs fold up 180° so that the ball head is concealed between them. This reduces the overall height of the folded tripod.
Short Column
The long section of the column can be removed, so that the head and short column section can be attached directly to the chassis.
Adjustable Legs
The legs are independently adjustable to 3 leg angles: 24, 55, and 80°.

    Oben CT-3551 reviews

CT-3551 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-113T Ball Head is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lightweight and compact but not sturdy I didn't want to have to drag around something heavy in tropical heat, so I wanted a compact, lightweight tripod, which this is. The rubber and spiked feet are useful on pavement and ground. The ball head works fine and tightens nicely. On the legs, I wanted to keep those twist locks tight, and one lock broke. I must have over-tightened it, but if I can do that, that's a design flaw. And there's no positive feel on tightening the lock on the rotating center column, which feels sloppy. All in all, this tripod does the job when you learn its quirks, but the manufacturing quality is a bit sketchy. I'll have to buy another one for the next tropical expedition, and for the price I didn't expect that.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Design...Good for Travel I was looking for a compact, lightweight, sturdy travel tripod that was easy to pack on my varied photo adventures and this seemed to fit the bill. I tried a few other Tripods; including 2 other Obens, during my search and found this one to meet my requirements best to date.My main camera is a Sony a6000 so weight was not huge factor, even with a 55210mm telephoto lens; but I found the Oben BE-113T (13lbs limit) ball head to work much better than the Oben 8 lb version (BE-108T). I was able to positively frame shots much easier with this one versus the 8 pounder.Features work great...legs extend smoothly, leg locks are solid, center column is solid and easy to adjust (works great reversed for macro shots), ball head has nice pan friction to it for smooth panorama shots, rubber and spiked feet are a real plus especially for softer surfaces...but not everything was so rosy.Of the 3 Oben tripods I ordered 2 had to be returned for a variety of manufacturing issues. One unit had a leg segment that consistently jammed when attempting to open or close and a weight hook on the center column that would stick and grind, another had grit in the monopod leg and flimsy locking latches; not something you would expect from a $$ item. These have a Made in China tag and them and unfortunately it showed. Even the 3rd unit (which I am keeping) does not have the best leg latches but I am hoping they hold up. These tripods come with a 5 year warranty which is my insurance policy in case not.All of 3 the Oben's I tried had carbon fiber legs; and from a stability standpoint were decent as long as you do not touch the legs during longer shutter activity. This light of a tripod tended to vibrate some (right up into the camera) when lightly tapped; but probably to be expected in this lightweight (2.5 lbs) of a model. The 4 section legs seemed to be slightly more stable than the 5 section leg models but, when tested, all held up well with 5+ second night exposures as long as a timer or remote shutter were used. The only other thing I did not like was being forced to carry and use an allen key to attach the arca quick release plate to the camera. It could not be hand tightened; so I ordered some other mini D-ring hinged screws to solve that. If you do so make sure to measure the original screw length and match that or it may be to long. So - in summation:Good size and weight for traveling, good feature set and adequate stability but:Not so good on the quality manufacturing side and being forced to order separate D- ring screws for the arca plate so tools were not necessary to mount the plate to a camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid little tripod with great bang for the buck used this tripod on a hiking trip to Joshua Tree and then in the Wilds of Las Vegas for a couple of days. It did an admirable job holding my D5 for some long exposure shots even on a windy day. I hooked my bag to the bottom of the center column for added support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality - Perfect Traveling Companion Bought this because I wanted something lightweight and compact for hiking out west. I shoot with a Canon 6D and have used the tripod with my 100-400L zoom (heavy lens). The ball head is beautifully machined and easy to lock down. I would not recommend it for video panning ... you will get some vibration from a lightweight rig with a top-heavy camera and lens (have not tried the ballast hook, however). Might work with a different head (i.e., one with a panning and tilt handle) Anyway, I've used it at night for Milky Way shots (with a remote trigger)and it's done great. My sample had no manufacturing issues -- the twist locks on the legs are positive and strong. Twist lock saves time during setup since you can loosen all four at once.As for the allen key for the arca plate - you can get D-ring plates for under $ dollars - I've bought a couple extra ... keep the Oben plate on my camera full time ... another on the support ring for the 100-400.This thing folds small - easy to pack in a suitcase or on a backpack. Nice zipper case. What's not to love?If there are manufacturing issues, then I was lucky. But my copy makes me happy every time I get to use it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed with this order and this product I'm serious photo shooter with Nikon D800, usually with 70-200mm/F2.8, or 85mm/F1.4 lenses, plus flash or remote trigger mounted on top, mostly for portrait shooting. What I'm looking is a light weight for travel, but tough enough to handle such weight. I did a lot of research, and I believe this is the one I'm looking for. When I received the package, first thing to my surprise, is that the real CT-3551 is totally different from the product photos posted on BH, or even on manufacturer's website. See the photo I uploaded. This makes me felt that I'm been cheated. The second thing to my surprise is that the leg is so slime, far more than my imagine. I put a quarter coin and one cent coin on top and at the bottom, use 100mm+ focus to take a pic for your reference, so you can imagine the diameter of each section. Especially the last section, looks like a chopstick, feels so weak that can break at any moment when the camera is mounted on it. The lock mechanism of each section is controlled by some plastic piece inside the tube. I pull it apart at first time try to extend the leg due to the poor assemble. But by a simply look, you can put it back without any problem, as long as you don't twist the lock all the way out. Other than that, it's light weight, good making quality, good for travel tripod. Even it claims can handle 13.2 lb load capacity, But I don't think this is for DSLR camera, it's not safe. In a conclusion, this is absolutely not for a full frame camera with lense, or mirrorless camera with large lense. Also, be aware that what you see is totally not what you see from the product pics on the web.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from True Lies This tripod is a hot mess, I bought in the sale and it's a total horror show. My main tripod is in for service and got this to cover for it. The main shaft has about 1 - 3 mm of "movement" and the head has no way of clamping other than a twist to screw it on. The legs DO NOT HAVE METAL SPIKES as advertised, which is the main reason I bought it, the rubber legs just seem to slide and don't grip any surface as all. Sending it back right away. TERRIBLE TRIPOD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little travel tripod Mine has Traveled! I got this before a trip of a lifetime to Yellowstone. Luckily I used it fir quite awhile before the trip. In winter, Spring, summer, then took the trip in autumn. I use it with a D7500 and 200-500 Nikon which has a Kirk Plate attached to that. This allows a Arca Swiss plate firmly attached to the heavy lens. Used with a Black Rapid Strap attached to the lens, it was a fast and solid way of using the rig. I had to use lock tight on the device in the center to keep a hook firmly in place if you want to weight the light tripod. Make absolutely sure you know the operation and maintenance of the whole set up before you use in the real field. The Black Rapid Strap and Kirk Plate were essential in carrying the camera and lens in the field. A camera and lens like this requires the Arca Swiss attached to The Lens, not the camera which is lighter. Only in panning during video did I feel like I could have used a smoother swing. Other than that I use this tripod nearly EVERY day. When I use a lighter camera rig like D7200 camera and 16-80 lens I use a Oben Plate which I believe came with the tripod. That plate attaches to the camera base. That also worked perfectly. Again the only thing I would have liked would be smoother pans during video. This is a beautiful, lightweight travel tripod. Be advised in a heavy wind you'd better guard your tripod, also use the hook to weight your rig, etc.! I have used it a lot over the last two years.
