Oben AC-2361L overview

  • 1Description

The AC-2361L 3-Section Aluminum Lateral Tripod from Oben is a sturdy, professional support for any DSLR, point-and-shoot camera, or a compact camcorder. With a load capacity of 17.6 lb and a generous maximum height of 68.2", the lateral tripod features a tilting, swiveling center column that enables infinitely flexible positioning for macro photography and other uses.

Engaging the lateral adjustment lever frees the tilting of the center column once it's been extended past the chassis, which becomes possible by pressing the button at the column's bottom to disengage the safety bolt. Once extended, the column can tilt, with no ratcheting, from its original 0°, straight-up-and-down orientation, to a 180° upside-down orientation – with possible stops everywhere in between, including a 90° lateral position. Twisting a knob on the chassis locks and unlocks the 360° swiveling of the center column and its upper collar.

The tripod's flip locks, which enable the extension and securing of the leg stages, are user-adjustable. By using a supplied Allen key, the user can tighten two points on each spring-loaded flip lock to safeguard their continued reliable performance.

With its anodized aluminum construction, the AC-2361L is ready to survive the rigors of professional work. The tripod chassis is cast aluminum for further durability.

When it's not being used in its lateral mode, the AC-2361L's rapid center column functions like any professional tripod, extending after a twist of the knob on the upper collar. The tripod's center column can also be removed from both the chassis and the upper collar so that it can be reversed. For protecting your camera when the column is retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper under the center-post collar. Steel locking screws underneath the center-post collar enable you to fasten a camera head more securely.

Pull-in/push-out positive leg locks allow you to set the positions of the three legs independently at three different angles. This allows you to shoot from low angles or on uneven terrain. For stability on softer terrain, the AC-2361L features metal spikes that retract and emerge by twisting the foot's rubber portion.

Center column adjusts throughout a complete sphere of possible positions, so you can take steady shots from virtually any angle
Leg warmers on two legs mitigate the effects of extreme heat & cold and provide grip
The two included Allen keys attach to a tripod leg, so you're always ready to tighten components
Reversible 1/4"-20 & 3/8"-16 screw fits almost any head
Bubble level on tripod chassis
Center column is grooved to prevent its rotation within the upper collar
Integrated aluminum loop for attaching the optional shoulder strap
Rugged rubber tips with retractable spikes for shooting both indoors and outdoors on any terrain
Included padded carry bag features dual heavy-duty zippers, an interior pocket, and extra room to accommodate a head

    Oben AC-2361L reviews

    AC-2361L 3-Section Aluminum Tripod is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good tripod Overall the tripod is a good tripod. My only problem with it is the lateral bar sits to loose when not being used in the lateral position. It cannot be tightened down for a snug fit; making it a bit of a problem when panning up and down or panning right and left if you need a quick shot. Since the bar moves around you have to slow down to get the proper position which caused me to miss shots concerning wildlife. For the price of the tripod, I would expect the lateral bar to seat firmly when not being used in the lateral position. If you are not in a hurry, you will like it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Used primarily in-studio. Great controls and with the ability to move the center column up in to a horizontal position makes this trip-pod wonderful. This tripod is a little on the heavy side... but that is what I wanted to be able to support my DSLR with battery-grip and a long lens. I also wanted something that would allow me to use a long lens in a horizontal position without tipping over. The controls for locking the bullhead are great, smooth and well positioned. The flip locks on the legs are great as well. Very happy with it. Has a great bag and strap including. It folds up well keeping it snug and compact considering its bulk.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sturdy Tripod I bought this tripod in July 2015 and the only reason I bought it is because I needed a second tripod to photograph still life subjects. I opted for the swiveling center column to get some extra reach which I haven't had any need for until recently. I generally will use a Manfrotto 410 Junior Gear Head which usually give enough reach but on one subject I had to use the center column and it didn't hold (my DSLR was not mounted). The clamp obviously will not close tightly, I also noticed some metal shavings. The rosettes sheared under under a relatively light load. Fortunately I have a Gitzo Explorer tripod and I was able to finish what I was doing. Other than this problem, which I fixed partly by inserting a shim, the tripod is sturdy enough to handle my DSLR with battery pack, the Manfrotto 410 head and sometimes one or two Kirk FR1 focusing rails.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Versatile I do a lot of product shots, ingredient shots, and stop-motion animation with this tripod. It's extremely versatile and easy to manipulate, especially since you don't need to tighten or loosen any joints to move the legs around. The only downside to that, is that if you want to put the legs WAY out, the tripod will slowly descend under the weight of the camera. The arm that extends out is probably the most useful thing for me about this camera, paired with the fact that the legs aren't tied together so you can spread them out of the way. This is an incredible item for the price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage Horrible, please do not buy, I've ordered this tripod and out of the box the design and the construction failed to operate as it should. No it was not a faulty item it was pure bad design.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not happy When I extend the center support it keeps sliding dowm no matter how tight i tighten the lock screw! I have to use a c clamp on the square tubing in order to stop it from coming down. Also the supplied storage bag is too short to hold the tripod and gimble head. Other than that it is ok but would not purchase it again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Faulty tightener -- enormous frustration! I often use this tripod with dSLR on a ball head, and turn the main post at 90 degrees to shoot straight down (like a copy stand). The tightening knob to keep the post from drooping does not work at all well, and must be tightened with superhuman strength to keep the post from sagging when the camera is attached. It would be a useful product except for that huge flaw!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All-in-one = superior versatility Weither in the studio or on location, if I could only take one tripod with me, this would be it. The Oben lateral tripod must have undergone rigorous development by professionals before being released to consumers. Versitle positions allow macro shots of ants (the bug's eye view) to full verticle extension (the God's eye view) very quickly; all adjustments can be made using only one hand ! Quite heavy when hiking but it's weight makes for stability which is good especially for long exposures. May take a few years to find any flaws.
