Oben CC-2481L overview

  • 1Description

The CCC-2481L 4-Section Carbon Fiber Lateral Tripod from Oben is a sturdy, professional support for DSLRs, any point-and-shoot or mirrorless camera, or most camcorders. With a load capacity of 26.4 lb and a generous maximum height of 68", the lateral tripod features a tilting, swiveling center column that enables flexible positioning for macro photography and other uses.

Engaging the lateral adjustment lever frees the tilting of the center column once it's been extended past the chassis, which becomes possible by pressing the button at the column's bottom to disengage the safety bolt. Once extended, the column can tilt, with no ratcheting, from its original 0°, straight-up-and-down orientation, to a 180° upside-down orientation – with possible stops everywhere in between, including a 90° lateral position. Twisting a knob on the chassis locks and unlocks the 360° swiveling of the center column and its upper collar.

The tripod's flip locks, which enable the extension and securing of the leg stages, are user-adjustable. By using a supplied Allen key, the user can tighten two points on each spring-loaded flip lock to safeguard their continued reliable performance.

With its 6x carbon fiber legs and center column, the CC-2481L is relatively lightweight (3.95 lb) and extremely durable. The tripod chassis is cast aluminum alloy for further durability.

When it's not being used in its lateral mode, the CC-2481L's rapid center column functions like any professional tripod, extending after a twist of the knob on the upper collar. The tripod's center column can also be removed from both the chassis and the upper collar so that it can be reversed. For protecting your camera when the column is retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper under the center-post collar. Steel locking screws underneath the center-post collar enable you to fasten a camera head more securely.

Pull-in/push-out positive leg locks allow you to set the positions of the three legs independently at three different angles. This allows you to shoot from low angles or on uneven terrain. For stability on softer terrain, the CC-2481L features metal spikes that retract and emerge by twisting the foot's rubber portion.

Center column adjusts throughout a complete sphere of possible positions, so you can take steady shots from virtually any angle
The two included Allen keys attach to a tripod leg, so you're always ready to tighten components
Legs with four sections tend to collapse shorter for easier portability. The CC-2481L folds to 22.4".
Reversible 1/4"-20 & 3/8"-16 screw fits almost any head
Bubble level on tripod chassis
Center column is grooved to prevent rotation within the upper collar
Integrated aluminum loop for attaching an optional shoulder strap
Rugged rubber tips with retractable spikes for shooting both indoors and outdoors on any terrain
Included padded carry bag features dual heavy-duty zippers, an interior pocket, and extra room to accommodate a head

    Oben CC-2481L reviews

CC-2481L 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod is rated 1.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Utter disappintment As a professional, I have about 15 tripods - some as old as 25 years. This is the very first tripod I have ever had fail. The white plastic pieces installed to assist with the compression leg-tightening system broke and fell out (see attached cell phone pic), thus making it impossible for the affected legs to remain up in their respective receivers. I would also like to note that the compression system requires frequent adjustments - every second shoot that I use it on. This does not project a professional image. I have numerous pieces of Oben equipment that functions well, but in the future, having lost several hundred dollars on this item, I will be using other brands.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A find set of legs A good tripod. It is not quite as precise as the two smaller Gitzo pods that I have but it is very good and far less expensive. It does the job for more than 40% less. I like it a lot. It provides a solid platform and the ability to extend the center column horizontally is a cery nice addition. No regrets about this tripod. Not five a five star tripod but a solid five star value.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Center Column has issue The 90 degree joint at the center column has a play for my copy (see attached picture), causing center column has a play laterally. No matter how I tied the nobs, the play does not go away. I returned this tripod to B&H since it is useless to my astrophotography work. If there is no issue like this, I would give this tripod to 4 stars for light weight & integrated spike feet.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money I have had this tripod for three years and the center pole has never been stable. There is no way to tighten the grips to make it stable. It was a waste of money. Spend your money on a different product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good concept, flawed design details I have used a Gitzo high end tripod for years and it has been a reliable sturdy support system. Truth be told, however, I have never been a fan of the twist lock system. It is very easy to not get t joint tight when in a hurry and then the leg will creep. Or worse. I also wanted more versatility with the center column and the ability to get the camera into unusual attitudes. When in the field every subject is fair game and I was often frustrated by the Gitzo limitations. My search led to the Oben. It has the flip locks I wanted, a versatile muti-position center column, and built in spikes cleverly integrated with the rubber feet. As soon as I set up the tripod and exercised the center column I knew this tripod would not be acceptable. The center column bearing and clamp system simply does not work well. The bearing material does not slide nicely and the bearing is manufactured too small in thickness to properly clamp up the center column. The clamp when fully tightened could not prevent the center column from being twisted a few degrees back and forth. I determined that with a strip of index card sandwiched between the bearing and the clamp I could get the clamp to do its job, however I was not willing to fix a new tripod, and I returned it to B&H without a problem. For much less money it might be acceptable to shooters less fussy than me, but I consider it unacceptable for pro level work. I ended up buying a Benro GC258F. While it has a few minor negatives, I am pleased with it and it exceeds the capabilities of my old Gitzo at only a few more ounces of weight. See my review of the Benro for more details.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total garbage For what it cost at like half off I bought two and they are both junk. I had no idea that BH even sold anything this low quality.
