Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing a versatile focal length range with a bright constant maximum aperture, the Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. from Panasonic is a 24-70mm equivalent zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives, this lens's f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for selective focus control. The optical design makes use of four aspherical elements, one UHR element, and one UED element to suppress spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. A Nano Surface Coating has also been used to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast when shooting in bright, backlit conditions.

Complementing the optical attributes, this lens is also characterized by its POWER O.I.S. system, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit working handheld in difficult lighting conditions. A stepping AF motor and internal focusing mechanism are also used for quick, quiet focusing performance to benefit both still and video applications. Additionally, the lens is sealed against moisture and dust to better enable its use in harsh environmental conditions.

Standard wide-angle to portrait-length zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 24-70mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture provides consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Four aspherical elements and one Ultra High Refractive Index (UHR) element reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and rendering.
One Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion element (UED) minimizes chromatic aberrations and color fringing for greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Nano Surface Coating has been applied to individual elements to noticeably reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Stepping AF motor and internal focus design provides smooth and quiet focusing performance that is well-suited to both photo and video use.
POWER Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) minimizes the appearance of camera shake to realize sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Weather-sealed construction, including a rubber seal around the mount, benefits working in trying environmental conditions.

    Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 reviews

    Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 213.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from As good as its gets I've had this lens for a few months and it is truly a perfect match for the GH3. The photos I have taken with this lens/GH3 combo match anything I have taken with Canon or Sony. The zoom is so very smooth not tight, not loose it is just right. Auto focus is fast and silent for video and if you like to pull focus manually this lens will not disappoint. OIS is very good probably as good as any canon lens I have used, I can't say it's as good as the OIS in the tamron 24-70 but in my experience so far image quality is equal. People complain about the price but any lens of this quality is equal to double in price. This is a must have lens for the M43 system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING LENS This lens has blown me away. I'm using it with a BMPCC video camera and I couldn't be happier. It produces sharp crisp images with beautiful bokeh and reliable depth of focus. The only minor complaints I have is that the O.I.S. which is a must for handheld/shoulder mount shots could be a little better, and the infinite focus which is fantastic could be a bit faster. However, both are still darn good at the price point. I might be picky as I'm used to using much higher end glass on better cameras for some projects, but this is my own run and gun rig so for the cost/purposes I'm willing to accept some sacrifice and so I think it's perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens! After reading all reviews I jumped on this lens to match my new OM-D. I was shockingly surprised by the sharpness, the colors and the contrast. I never thought such a small piece of glass could produce such quality pictures as my Canon L primes and zooms! The only thing missing, I believe is a focus scale. This lens might be the only lens you need for your travel or everyday lens on a micro four thirds...But I am going for the 35-100 f/2.8 as well to match the quality and cover all focal lengths.. Great buy, don't think a second, I highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This maybe the only lens you will need. Build quality on this lens is top notch, it's fast and very good for low light. Picture quality matches the primes and it's weather sealed. I use it on the Olympus om-d along with the Panny pz 14-42mm and the 20mm and the 100-300mm . They way it looks the 14-42 may only be used when I want to keep the camera in my pocket along with the 20mm the rest of the time the 12-35mm will stay on the camera it's that good. I have already sold a few of my primes as I will not be using them now that I have this lens. I highly recommend this one, tad pricey but it is worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, bright and beautiful This zoom lens is just amazing. It's relatively fast with a constant f2.8 and has a very useable zoom range (it's equivalent to a 24mm-70mm field of view) - it covers wide and short telephoto shots. The focus and zoom rings are buttery smooth in their operation. The built in image stabilization works well and really helps smooth out handheld work (I use this primarily for a video lens). The bokah this lens creates with it's wide open aperture @ 2.8 is exceptional in my opinion. The only negative I would mention, is that the aperture motor is a bit noisy (there is a very audible sound when changing f/stops) - but this is a nit-pick. Overall, this is a must-have lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not perfect I've own this lens for a couple of months now and I'm comfortable leaving it on my OM-D as my main lens. But I just want to mention the only negative I've seen so far and that's a kind of halo or magenta-green ring that can be seen in the middle of the frame if you try to push the raw files 1EV or more. I've seen it in two different situations: long duration night shots and in foggy conditions with the sun in the frame. Panasonic cameras may be able to deal with this phenomenon better than my Olympus since they use lens data for chromatic aberration correction. The workaround for this is to bracket the exposure to make sure you have the right one. Other than this I'm very pleased with the lens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Don't use for follow focus Great lens for photo work, but if you want to mount a follow focus system it won't work. The focus ring is electronically based. This means that if you turn the ring a quarter turn to place your subject in focus, it won't necessary be a quarter turn back to the original starting location. I purchased a follow focus system for this lens and immediately ran into problems trying to mark off focus locations on the focus ring. they kept changing. If you want to use a follow focus system, buy an older mechanically based lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love This Lens I looked at both version 1 and version 2 of this lens and with a $300.00 difference I decided to go with the older Version 1. I love this lens. It does everything I want it to do. It works great on my Ronin-M. The auto focus is better than I expected for my needs and the dual stabilizer is pretty smooth for hand held. But the sharpness and color are amazing. I have been shooting with older Nikon primes and I can't believe the difference. I have control over how much DoF that I want even at 12mm. This lens pretty much stays on my Gh5 all the time. I am getting rid of the primes and am planning on getting the 35-100mm Lumix lens to go with this one.
