If you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella (Black/White).

First of all it's a really huge, broad light source that wraps light around your subject yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors. Put another way, if you combined a beauty dish with a softbox, you'd have a parabolic umbrella.

This umbrella has a unique design structurally as well. Instead of bendable metal the 16 inner ribs are made of durable fiberglass. The fixed black backing ensures that all of the light output is on your subject instead of through the umbrella. You can also vary the light-to-umbrella distance along the shaft for a harder or softer look or for longer throw capability. With the Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella less is definitely more.

    7' Parabolic Umbrella (84" - White/Black) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I love it, but it isn't a true parabolic The shaft is a bit too weak to support the full weight of the umbrella at full extension. If I need to use this with the shaft nearly horizontal to the ground, I typically mount the umbrella on one light stand (in close) and the light source on another. It's a bit of a bodge, but it works well and remains stable. I've been shooting with this unit for roughly 18 months. It's holding up well. But, if you need a true parabolic, this isn't for you. This is just a really large umbrella with a misleading name. I will be purchasing a couple more of these, soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Construction The 7' parabolic umbrella is well built and performs great for blocking unwanted glare or directing light around a subject. Great for portraits, still-life and environmental photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great big umbrella I use this umbrella outside with two speed lights. It's wonderful and gives perfect soft light that replicates sunlight. I have to use an assistant to hold it otherwise it would be lost to the Oregon wind. It is much to large to use indoors with 8 foot ceilings. The umbrella sturdy though it sags a bit due to it's own weight in the mount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sturdy construction This product is great for portrait, still life and other forms of indoor photography. Also great outdoors for blocking or controlling the level of lighting on the subject. Very well constructed and is easily attached to existing light sources or stands containing umbrella mounts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Produces great quality light Love the light quality and the construction overal feels good. Fiberglas ribbing and a good quality fabric. The main monting stem could be stronger as it bows under its own weight when mounted on the heads.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Umbrella, But Hardly 7 Feet! Let's get this outta the way right up front...this thing is a wonderful umbrella, very well made, and a great bargain at the current price of only 80 bucks, but it is only a 6' umbrella! I'm 6'1 and when I open this it's barely as tall as me. That's not hyperbole...unless I'm actually 7 feet tall! I opened it next to my79Rime LiteGrand Box and guess what...it's smaller! So unless I got a six footer instead of the advertised seven, let's call it like it is. That said, for 80 bucks it still gets the job done. 3 Stars for size, 5 stars for everything else...4 stars overall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for lighting the hole set I bought this umbrella to use when shooting portraits. I place it behind me to evenly light the hole set. I usually put a beauty dish or softbox closer to the subject. this creates a really nice look.
