Zacuto Z-FIND-PRO232 Overview

  • 1Description

The Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2" Screens from Zacuto is an optical viewfinder that videographers may find necessary for shooting sharp, stable video on DSLR cameras like the Canon 5D MkIII, Nikon D800, or others with the same size LCD display. Whether shooting handheld or on a tripod, the Z-Finder Pro turns your camera's 3.2" LCD screen into a clear, easy-to-focus viewfinder that lets you see your image in magnified detail, even under the brightest sunlight. Just as crucially, the Z-Finder Pro provides an extra degree of handling comfort and a crucial point of contact--between camera and eye--that adds stability to any handheld video.

The Pro 2.5x version offers an adjustable diopter for near or far sighted users, and the LCD image is enlarged by a factor of 2.5x, so you can see every detail for pinpoint focus. The diopter's extended range of -4.75 and up makes it especially useful for those who are nearsighted. The Z-Finder attaches to your camera via the included Gorilla Baseplate and mounting frame, which mount to the bottom of your camera using a standard 1/4"-20 screw. A non-stick rubber backing ensures a tight fit and prevents scratching of the LCD screen, so that the entire Z-Finder snaps off easily when not in use. Once detached, the unit can hang conveniently around your neck from the included lanyard.

Note: If you already have a Z-Finder, you can purchase just the Z-Finder 3.2" Frame for small body cameras.

2.5x magnification.
40mm diameter lens for excellent light throughput.
Allows 3.2" DSLR camera displays to have correct form factor for video.
Field of view perfectly matches 3.2" LCD screen size.
The diopter's extended range of -4.75 and up makes it especially useful for those who are nearsighted. 1

    Zacuto Z-FIND-PRO232 Reviews

    Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2- Screens is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keep screen cover on with d800 The viewfinder is key for doing serious video work with the d800 and it is great product. One word of caution: The control button on the back is impeded if the Nikon d800 screen cover is removed when attaching the mounting frame. This can lead to the camera not recording video which I discovered the hard way and missed some key moments in a shoot.Keep the cover on and the problem is fixed.Zacuto makes this clear on the website when it comes to the adhesive mounting frame but I wish they had said something in the documentation with the finder.Hope this helps any other d800 users out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Precision is professional The zacuto z-finder is a must for dslr video. Not being able to look through the viewfinder when shooting video makes it difficult to determine precise focus especially when outdoors. The z-finder fixes this issue by enlarging the screen for your eye through the viewfinder and cutting out most light. The 2.5x magnification is perfect I think 3x would be a little overkill. With 2.5x you get to see the whole screen without having to scan your eyes around too much to take everything in. It does what it's supposed to do and that's allowing you to see what your frame looks like with no question of focus or exposure. Get it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not Great Bought this Z-Finder to assist my focus, there are good sides about this gadget, as well as bad sides. The magnified glass made it easier to get the exact focus even in bright sunny days. It is very similar to looking at a EVF.The bad thing of having the Z-finder on is it limited the height range. With the Z-Finder on I can no longer shoot low/high shots, so most of the time I had to remove it to achieve such shots. On top of that, the base plate is a bit disturbing. The secure screw came with it extends out from the back, making it hard to pack the camera into smaller bags with the plate on.Finally, after I put a layer of protection screen on the LCD, the view through the Z-Finder is less sharp.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tool for great HDDSLR shoots We're using the Canon 5D Mark III for a variety of web videos. The camera produces some amazing footage. However, the screen proves exceptionally difficult to make certain you hit focus. Short of buying an external monitor (+ rig, plus additional bags) this is a great tool. You're still at the mercy of the monitor resolution, but with the eye cup and magnification it's much easier to guarantee a good crisp shot. I did have some difficulty assembling and attaching the eye cup. The printed instructions are not great. Fortunately, an instructional video on the Zacuto site solved my problems.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Impossibly frustrating The Z-Finder has clear glass and looks and feels like a quality product, but its flaws make it aggravating.? I bought it to use for still photography with my Zeiss manual focus lenses, and once everything is in place and adjusted properly, it does its job making focusing of landscapes or micro work easier and more accurate than the camera's ground glass viewfinder. However, even after following the directions on the Zacuto video, the spacers are impossible to separate, without great force (more force than my arthritic hands can manage).? I have broken tabs off of three spacers.? Two more are in questionable shape after being forced.? The adhesive mounting frames which are supposed to stick over the camera's screen did not stay stuck.? If the plastic bits fit less aggressively, perhaps the glue would stick.? The tabs used to attach the mounting frame are too short to be of use with my "tall" camera body, so that isn't a good option when the glue fails.? The rubber bands work with a small camera, but are too short for the tall one.? Finally, the focusing ring barely changes the diopter.? It might as well not be there for all the good it does. I should have returned this device, but after one evening's struggle with it, it looks like it's ten years old. In my more than 50 years of photo work, I have not disliked a piece of equipment as much as I do this.? I will use it to check the focus of shots I have already taken, but it's unlikely I will use it as intended. If I were willing to dedicate one camera body with the Z-Finder permanently affixed, then I'd have no complaints except for the inadequate? diopter adjuster. I have never written a negative review before, but I am disappointed enough in this product to suggest that others not purchase it until there have been some changes made in the design.? I realize that it is a delicate balance between fitting too tightly and not tightly enough.? In this case there's ample room for improvement.? It's a fine idea that is not executed as well as it should be considering the cost.? If I do permanently mount it to my D800, it will be a fine gadget, but I am unwilling to tie up a camera in this way.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for Nikon D800 The build quality is superb as is its functionality. The only gripe I have is that it is supposed to fit the 3.2 screen on the Nikon D800 and although it covers the screen it does restrict the use of the 5 rear buttons on the left menu, lock, zoom, thumbnail and ok. It restricts because the bracket slightly overlaps these buttons and if you have large fingers you will just find you will need to work your fingers to get in and depress these. It also restricts the use of the multi selector on the right same deal here the bracket slightly comes too close to the selector and using the up, down and right navigation is just fine but when you need to use the left navigation you will be restricted. Can it be improved? After examining this bracket design I say yes. Recess the button areas by including 5 half moon cutouts on the left and 1 half moon cutout on the upper right to allow more room for fingers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Going to the movies view-finder Used this on a trip to Guatemala. Keeps the sun out and the magnification is magnificent! It's literally like you're watching a movie. It creates a space that gives the feeling that your in a large room. I kinda wanted to put little cut outs of the Mystery Science Theatre guys there at the bottom of my LCD. Everything mounts nice and snug and the eye piece itself can be used as extra stabilization, whether it's against your eye or your stomach or chest or whatever. For my trip, it stayed on my camera 90% of the time. High quality build. Durable plastic, metal and glass. Only complain was that I couldn't light a fire with it when I tried to use the magnifying glass on a piece of wood.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Overpriced and difficult to use at times I've tried to use this several times on different friends cameras. The sales people at B&H keep telling me its the best or one of the best. So I bought it and returned it after trying to use it again. It is clunky, hard to get on and off to the point that I feel like I'm about to break it. You have to add extenders to make the diopter work properly which obscures the screen. And it is way over priced for what it is. And the plastic housing just feels really cheap. The Hoodman viewfinders do the job for have the money and their construction, in some aspects, is much better.

Will this Zacuto Z finder fit on top of a Manfrotto 410 with a Canon 5dMk4?Would it still be able to flip down so you could access the Canon LCD or would it crash into the gear head before completing the flip?

Is this the right size for the canon 5d mk ii screen?
    Asked by: Anonymous
No, it is not. The Zacuto Z-Finder Compatibility Charts indicates the Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR camera would require either the Z-Finder Pro 2.5x (B&H # ZAZFINDPRO2), the Z-Finder Pro 3x (B&H # ZAZFINDPRO3), or the Z-Finder Jr (B&H # ZAZFINDJR) for use with the 5D Mark II. The Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2 screens is not listed as recommended for the 5D Mark II.

Does this and the 3.0x version work with the Fuji XT2?
    Asked by: Shree L.
The 2.5x and 3.0x magnification options are a personal preference and will work either way. However, the 3.0 and 3.2 sizes may not be perfectly compatible with the Fujifilm X-T2 camera. It is recommended to use the 3.0 sized Zacuto for the camera for a more proper fit. The larger 3.2 size will cover more of the rear of the camera and possibly some buttons.

Hi, do you know if exists a viewfinder with cockpit like GGS - Swivi S5 loupe? I need to see the image from above for shots from below. Thanks
    Asked by: Alvaro M.
We used to sell that or a similar product. I do not know why we no longer do. Here is one possibility. Dot Line SWIVI External Monitor for DSLR B&H # DOCSSWIVI. Here is another. I think it limited but may do what you need. Flipbac Angle Viewfinder (Black) B&H # FLAV3B. You may consider a monitor like this: SmallHD FOCUS 5 On-Camera Monitor B&H # SMMONFOCUS.

Does it work with canon 6D?
    Asked by: Anonymous
As the 6D has a 3 LCD, the Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2 Screens would not be the correct option for the 6D. According to Zacuto, the Z-Finder Pro 2.5x (ZAZFINDPRO2) would be the way to go with the Canon 6D.
