Zacuto Z-FIND-PRO332 overview

  • 1Description

The Z-Finder Pro 3.0x for 3.2" Screens from Zacuto is an optical viewfinder that videographers may find necessary for shooting sharp, stable video on DSLR cameras like the Canon 5D MkIII, Nikon D800, or others with the same size LCD display. Whether shooting handheld or on a tripod, the Z-Finder Pro turns your camera's 3.2" LCD screen into a clear, easy-to-focus viewfinder that lets you see your image in magnified detail, even under the brightest sunlight. Just as crucially, the Z-Finder Pro provides an extra degree of handling comfort and a crucial point of contact--between camera and eye--that adds stability to any handheld video.

The Pro 3.0x version offers an adjustable diopter for near or far sighted users, and the LCD image is enlarged by a factor of 3.0x, so you can see every detail for pinpoint focus. The Z-Finder attaches to your camera via the included Gorilla Baseplate and mounting frame, which mount to the bottom of your camera using a standard 1/4"-20 screw. A non-stick rubber backing ensures a tight fit and prevents scratching of the LCD screen, so that the entire Z-Finder snaps off easily when not in use. Once detached, the unit can hang conveniently around your neck from the included lanyard.

Note: If you already have a Z-Finder, you can purchase just the Z-Finder 3.2" Frame for small body cameras.

    Z-Finder Pro 3.0x for 3.2" Screens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Doesn't fit D750 without modification I bought this for the D750 and had to return it. The screen on the D750 sits almost flush with the bottom of the camera body, and the thumbscrews for the Z frame interfere with mounting the loupe that low. It's a difference of millimeters, but it is enough to be unusable. The frame obscures the shutter speed, aperture, etc information along the bottom of the screen. I suppose you could shim the gorilla plate, or find lower profile screws, to make it work. Ignoring this obvious flaw, if you mount this up it turns your camera into a whole new beast for shooting handheld video. This is a killer product and very well made, so they get 4 stars anyway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Find that Zone What a great product. Unlike most others who bought this, I use it for still photography when using a manual focus lense. I could no longer rely on the focus confirmation on my Canikon, and was desperately searching for alternative focusing screens for my dslrs. This is the answer. Focusing with F1.4 manual focus is now possible when using live view. If you are using this for stills, make sure your dslr is quite snappy when using live view for taking pictures. As for my own tests, the Canon 5DIII, 7DII and D7200 is okay. The D800e is not suitable as you cannot take the face detection off. A few more tips, buy the Zacuto tripod mount when you purchase this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Essential Piece of Gear I just purchased another Z-finder for my second camera and I couldn't be happier. This has become a mainstay in our small production crew's kit, and I find it nearly impossible to shoot video without it. Not only does it deliver a bright and crisp image to the eye (which is essential for critical focusing), but it allows the shooter to hold the camera firmly and comfortably against the eye, creating a very stable platform. This is an excellent product for run and gun video shooting and I can't imagine trying to do a job without one. If you have tried to handhold a camera with a 3 screen and shoot stable video, you will be blown away with this viewfinder. It will change the way you shoot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expensive but worth it I already owned a Pro 3x 3.0 for my D3s, and needed a 3.2 version for my new D810. I already knew the quality was top notch. The only thing I've noticed with the new optic, is that for some reason on the D810, I required two of the three extenders for me to be able to get focus on the LCD (without reading glasses), where none was required on the 3x 3.0 version on my D3s. Of course, that is why they are included, and it worked just as it should, I just thought that odd. Yeah, I'd buy this again, and think it is an absolute necessity for handholding a DSLR.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product for DSLR Filming The build quality is excellent, thought has gone into a good design that has flexibility in it's a djustment meaning that it can fit a variety of DSLRs. The result looks good so I don't mind attaching it to my expensive DSLR, it doesn't detract from my camera by looking cheap. It works brilliantly, the screen is now large and shielded from sunlight compensating for the DSLRs main shortcoming when filming outdoors. The eye cup is comfortable and having that as a third anchor point makes any handheld filming more stable. Tripod mounts on the base plate provide a wide range of options for further stabilisation. My only negative it that you need to snap off the viewfinder from its attachment to take stills with the regular viewfinder. A great product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product, but not awesome. I picked this up after initially buying a lower priced alternative which did not fit my D600 properly. This is well built like all Zacuto items, but even with the battery grip frame extender it still didn;t sit flat. To pay a few hundrfed dollars for this and the grip extender onyl to have to hit * for soem spacing washers seems a little ridiculous. That beign said after my modification with the washers the unit performs well, attaches securely and is a god sent in direct light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply the best! Worth every penny. If you're going to cheap out on an item for your rig, don't cheap out on your viewfinder. This item it what you need to get the results you want. Don't waste your time with their competition. This is the one. The only complaint I can muster is that their stuff is built too well ... a little rigid when un-boxing/assembling to fit on to your camera. The first few times you snap it on and off with feel strange because it snaps on really tight and is hard to get off. This gets a little easier. Super comfortable, well made, great looking.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Problems When the finder is snapped into the lcd finder bracket it is impossible to take off without bending the bracket. The cover for the eye piece falls off constantly. The lanyard for the view finder was improperly sewn so it doesn't attach on one side. The instructions gave the impression that you had to dissasemble the eyepiece intially. It was next to impossible to reassemble.
