Canon 40mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its slim, pancake design, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM from Canon is a sleek and versatile short-normal prime that is ideal for everyday, walk-around shooting. Its f/2.8 maximum aperture helps to realize its slim stature, and also suits working in difficult lighting conditions and offers control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques. One aspherical element has been incorporated in the optical design, and helps to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for high sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied, which helps to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, benefitting both photo and video applications, an STM stepping AF motor is used to realize quick, accurate, and near-silent autofocus performance.

Short normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 64mm equivalent focal length.
Modestly bright f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light, affords control over depth of field, and helps to keep the overall physical design compact and lightweight.
Pancake form factor measures less than 1" thick for an ultra-portable, versatile design.
One aspherical element limits distortion and spherical aberration in order to realize greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An STM stepping AF motor realizes smooth, near-silent autofocus that is complemented by a rear focus system, advanced AF algorithms, and a high-speed CPU for fast AF performance.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Canon 40mm f/2.8 reviews

EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 799.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from THE MIGHTY MINI 40. This small, fast lens is an amazing little guy. If my 70-200 isnt on my Canon, THIS lens is. its not intimidating like the 70-200 is, which is great especially when taking pictures of people who aren't so fond of photos of themself. I havnet had issues of it autofocusing, and its super quiet. Its so small, I actually recommend NOT getting the UV filter, it adds 25% more length to the lens! haa. The only thing Im not a huge fan of is the focus ring. Its electronic meaning I cant use a Macro attachment, and expect it to focus. It takes up hardly any space in my lens. and its not hard to do a portrait shoot with JUST this little lens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quality Control, Early Production Issues I am 0 for 2 on this lens so B&H has given me a refund. The first lens caused underexposure on my 5D Mark II and quit working a couple of times so I had to remount it to get it to work. That's simply not acceptable for professional work. So B&H replaced it with a 2nd unit which had a large clump of debris inside the optic and vignetted so bad that it gave a a Toy Camera look at 2.8 that could not be properly corrected in post-processing, not to mention the grinding it did when mounted. All this may simply be a result of early production and quality control issues, but I just don't have the time or sense of humor to mess around with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good things come in small packages I was looking for a high quality, light weight lens for travel photography with my Canon 6D, so I decided to give this 40mm STM lens a try. The field of view is surprisingly wide compared to 50mm on full frame, and works really well for a lot of street scenes and architecture. The lens is perfectly sharp wide open at f2.8 with only moderate light fall-off in the corners so it's quite usable in low light. Distortion is also quite low. So far I'm very happy with the performance and expect to get a lot of use while traveling in urban environments this summer in combination with a short, fast telephoto (85mm) and a wide angle zoom for landscapes. Recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! With our first baby on the way, I wanted an inexpensive lens that was fast in low light and allowed for a smaller, easier to carry overall package. This lens delivered on all accounts. I had it in the hospital and love the shots I was able to get without the need of a flash. f/2.8 was great in low light and the super-short depth of field gave the pictures a nice soft background that just seems to work when photographing a day-old infant. The pancake lens also made the camera less intrusive and 40mm meant I was able to get tighter shots without needing to stand on the other side of the room. For what I needed, this lens really was perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Bargan This lens might be the best buy of the entire Canon line of lenses..I tested the canon 40mm against the 40mm f2 from Voightlander and was pleasantly surprised by the Cannon.I'm not going to say that the Canon was better in every way; but as far as center sharpness goes, I was amazed. I found my copy of the 40mm f2.8 pancake to be sharper in the center for all f stops untill f16 when Voightlander catches up. At f22 the voightlander is sharper. At 5.6 and F8 canon was quite a bit sharper. I own 5 other canon lenses (all "L" glass). For the price difference, this little knock around lens is amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In love I recently purchased the new 70 D body, I am never that fond of kit lenses so this is the first lens I decided to purchase to go with my new camera. I am in love with this lens. It is such a fun lens, it really captures the colors of the scene you are shooting well, and for the price the quality of the photos are great! If you are a intermediate photographer like me I know you will not be disappointed! This was actually my first stationary lens, I usually shoot everything with a wide angle zoom or a regular telephoto zoom, this lens has made me so excited to purchase another stationary lens. I see the 85 mm in my future:)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon Best Pancake Lens This is the best Canon pancake lens. Very small, light weight, yet the build quality is excellent, with metal mount and good glass. Image is very sharp, even at F2.8. Focus is very fast, even in live view AF mode. With the STM, you may override focus manually at anytime. The only issue is the manual focus - this is not a true manual focus, when you rotate the ring, the motor will drives the lens, at the same time it make some hmm noise, that is not good when recording video as the mic pick up the noise. Also the lens will not retract when the camera is powered off. So far, I am very happy with this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Sleeper of Sleepers ! One of the sharpest lenses I've ever used, a great match for full frame (and all) sensors. I do mostly travel and landscapes. I love the 40mm coverage on full-frame, and the 60mm equivalent on APS-C. I use a cheap rubber screw-on shade, so that if I bump it, the lens won't be damaged. But I've had misfocuses and balkiness, so that I have to shut off the 5D2 and turn it back on. This does not inspire confidence for weddings or street shooting. My old EF 35mm f2 is more trustworthy for those purposes. My suggestion, Canon, re-issue this otherwise great 40mm lens and get it right this time. My EF-S 24mm f2.8 is also new STM technology and does not seem to have these issues.
