Fostex HP-A8C overview

  • 1Description

The Fostex HP-A8C 32-Bit DAC Headphone Amplifier is a high-fidelity digital-to-analog converter with a discrete analog headphone amplifier. With this DAC, you can listen to music on headphones or speakers from a computer over USB or from another audio source device. For inputs, the DAC accepts digital AES/EBU, digital optical, digital coaxial, SD cards via an SDHC card slot, or analog RCA. For audio streamed via USB, coaxial and optical inputs, the DAC can up sample the incoming signal by x2 or x4 at up to a 192 kHz sample rate with 32-bit resolution for Mac OS X and 24-bit resolution for Windows.

Outputs
For outputs, the DAC features RCA line and two 1/4" headphone jacks
Control
A button on the front of the unit allows you to turn the power off/on, and two knobs allow you to select the input and output sources. An electronic volume knob allows you to adjust the headphone gain from 0 to -12 dB in 0.5 dB step increments. A direct-out mode can be engaged to bypass the volume control knob altogether. For added convenience, the DAC comes with a dedicated remote controller
Built-in SDHC Card Slot for DSD Playback
The SD card slot can playback content in Direct Stream Digital File format (DSF)
Asynchronous Mode with TCXO Clock
To keep precise low-jitter time, the DAC utilizes an internal asynchronous temperature-compensated crystal oscillator clock
Power
The DAC utilizes a large-capacity toroidal transformer power supply
Selectable Internal or External Clock
The DAC can utilize either its internal asynchronous crystal oscillator clock or be switched to sync via digital I/O to an external clock source such as from a separate analog to digital converter, a master clock, or a reference clock for syncing audio to video
Digital Filter Selection
To remove pre-echo from playback, the DAC allows you to select between a traditional sharp roll off and a minimum delay filter

    Fostex HP-A8C reviews

HP-A8C 32-Bit Digital Audio Converter and Headphone Amplifier is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful for the price Above all, I have to say that HP-A8C is finally reaching a reasonable price tag. This DAC is very good sounding, thanks to the AKM4399. The sound is more positive compared with the harsh and overly bright sound of DACmini CX. The built is fantastic and provided variable inputs. However, the built in amp is not powerful enough to drive over ear headphone, and might have problems with earbuds due to output impedence. USB input is still sensitive to cables. I would recommend using coax input if possible. SD card playback offers the best sound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent headphone amp and pre-amp I initially bought this for the headphone amplifier function to use with the Fostex TH-900 headphones. It is a match made in heaven. But then I decided to incorporate the HP-A8C into my stereo system using the pre-amp function ahead of the power amp. With 2 optical inputs an RCA input and a co-ax input it was enough for my system. The pre-amp sound is outstanding.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very flexible unit! Very well built with quality components. Very decent sounding headphone amplifier section but really performs when used in conjunction with built in DAC from a digital source. Very tight and fast bass control. Slightly forward midrange presentation. Smooth, detailed and extended high frequencies. Could use a little more power if used with power hungry headphones. Sounds fantastic when paired with Fostex TH-900 phones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Functional DAC/Headphone Amp Obviously well made, pretty easy to use, lots of inputs (2 optical, 2 digital (XLR and RCA), and USB) seems to be a high qualtiy headphone amp, and good quality when using the line outputs into my system. Has a great feature for the headphone output, you can adjust the gain of the amp itself as well as the volume to match it to different headphones that might be harder or easier to drive. Also has a line in, input, so you could use it as a 1 input preamp, which I haven't done. In my experience as an audiophile having listened to $2000-$5000 DACS may not be quite up to the standard of that highest stratosphere, but then again I got it at B&H for $*. From an audio point of view it has a musicality and liquidity that kind of addictive. Where it seems to fall short of the very best is in imaging and sound stage, but very listenable and exceptional for classical music.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wonderfully crisp At first when I turned this baby on I noticed a slight bit of crackling (about the first day) left it on all day and then listened the next day instead. Boy this thing does some work. Extremely detailed and very crisp music just flows through this with such ease I don't see myself buying any other of this type of product.
