Is there a reason to not use the wide angle adapter ring for non-wide angle lenses?

I purchased the 77mm wide angle adapter ring for my Canon 16-35 f4 and 24-105 f4 and it works fine. But when I tried it on my Canon 300mm f4 it would not attach because this lens has a built-in hood which is flush with the end of the lens. A work around is putting a UV filter on first. Built-in lens hood are the only situation I can think of where the wide angle adapter won't work and you will need the standard adapter.
