Apple Mac Pro Overview

  • 1Description

With 4.0 cores of total processing power, the Mac Pro Intel Xeon Quad-Core Desktop has been designed to be the fastest Mac ever--and it does not disappoint. Utilizing the latest technologies, and the finest eco-friendly materials, this generation of Apple's Mac Pro series continues the legacy of power, speed, and expansion it has come to be known for.

In addition to the raw power of the 4.0 cores, the boost performance can get up to 1.5x that of the normal processing speed. With high-performance ATI Radeon HD graphics, and ultra fast solid-state drive options your potential speed and performance is further enhanced--with up to 5x faster video performance, and 2.5x faster encoding. Expansion is fast and simple as well with the easy-access provided by the well-designed interior of the Mac Pro. It is literally a "snap" to add up to 32 GB of memory, four PCI Express expansion cards, and up to 8.0 TB of HDD or SSD storage.

With these impressive features, and many more, your Mac Pro Intel Xeon Quad-Core Desktop will easily tackle nearly anything you throw at it--while also functioning very efficiently. Compliant with Energy Star 5.0 ratings, and thoughtfully designed with a highly recyclable aluminum enclosure, as well as being BFR- and PVC-free, it will have a large impact on your workflow, but not so much on the environment.

More Cores, In One Die
The Mac Pro Intel Xeon Quad-Core Desktop is available in this 4.0-core configuration at 3.2GHz, and while many other multicore processors are composed of two separate dies, meaning some cached data travels outside of the processor itself in order to get from core to core. Because that's an inefficient way to access information the Mac Pro Intel Xeon Quad-Core Desktop's single-die, 64-bit architecture makes its fully shared L3 cache readily available to each of the cores. This results in faster access to cached data and greater application performance. Combine that with the other technological advances and you get a Mac Pro that's up to 1.5x faster than the previous generation
Integrated Memory
Traditionally, system memory was often connected to a processor via separate I/O controllers. However Intel's Xeon processors feature an integrated memory controller, thereby connecting memory directly to the processor. The Mac Pro processors then have faster access to data stored in memory, and memory latency is reduced
Power When You Need It, Stability When You Don't
Turbo Boost automatically boosts the processor clock speed based on workload, and if you're using an application that doesn't need every core, Turbo Boost then increases the speed of the active ones on top of that
24 Virtual Cores
The Intel Xeon processors support Hyper-Threading, which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core. So, for example, a 12-core Mac Pro presents 24 virtual cores that are recognized by OS X. Performance is enhanced because Hyper-Threading enables the processor to take better advantage of the execution resources available in each core
The Direct Approach
QuickPath Interconnect--a bidirectional, point-to-point connection--gives the Intel Xeon processors quick access to the disk, I/O, and other Mac Pro subsystems. There's a QuickPath Interconnect between the two processors in dual-processor Mac Pro models, as well. This connection acts as a direct pipeline, so processor-to-processor data doesn't need to travel to the I/O hub first--just another way the Mac Pro boosts performance across the board
Greater Efficiency, Lower Consumption
Energy Star 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer's typical annual power consumption. The Mac Pro meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, qualifying it for Energy Star

    Apple Mac Pro Reviews

Mac Pro Intel Xeon Quad-Core Desktop is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mac Pro Intel Xeon Quad-Core Desktop by Ordered this computer from B&H Photovideo online. It arrived in 4 days, and was very well double-packed. I immediately installed a Samsung Pro 840 SSD. This computer is FAST ! I have found no problems with it, other than it only having 6 GB of RAM. Which will be remedied after the Christmas Holidays. Installed the Mac OS Maverick and encountered no problems at all. Also installed a PCI card that provides 4 USB 3 ports which are very fast also. I use the system for photo and video work primarily. I recommend this computer to everyone wanting a fast and very expandable computer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Machine Replacement for Mac Pro (2006). Able to move three drives from old machine to new, and continue working quickly. Thus, now able to run latest OS X software and avoid hassle of external storage devices. Very excited about the new Mac Pro (circa 2013 Winter), but it feels like the options for high performance external storage are slim. Working with limited internal drive space will require new file management approaches, and I dealt with this a decade ago with SCSI drives Plan to wait until others pave the way this time around. The computer is expensive and heavy. This model though, is quieter and much improved over the design from six years ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Computer! This computer is super fast. Easy to add memory too. I added 24gb of ram myself in less than 10 minutes. You can't do that with their newer models, so I wanted to snatch this model up before they're out of stock. I'm a professional photographer and I have been able to run all my editing software at the same time without the computer missing a beat. I'm very happy with this purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Workhorse I use this machine for video and photograph editing as well as web publishing. This is a fast machine. I have now added 8GB or additional ram and 8TB of additional storage - something that is easy on this machine vs. say an iMac. Also much easier to maintain and clean than iMacs, something that is very important in dusty climates.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nothing special, just a basic mac pro Web designer, illustrator It is a good basic machine that will most likely deliver years of service as its predecessor did, but most displeased with apple and compatibility issues

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast, beautiful, but loud It works like a charm, but the graphics card fan and the four 3.5 SATA drives make much more noise than expected, and definitely more noise than any other product in the Mac line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thrilled beyond measure! I'm so glad I bought this Mac Pro before they all disappear. It is fast, quiet, energy efficient and handles everything I ask it to do speedily and with no problems whatsoever. This is undoubtedly the best computer I have ever owned. I never realized just how good the Mac Pro is until I had this one. It has my unqualified commendation as an outstanding product, bought from America's finest professional media equipment dealer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful Machine with a sleek design I purchased the machine to upgrade our Mac lab at work. We do a lot of design work and video editing work and needed something with more power and speed. This is a great piece of hardware because of the ability to upgrade almost everything internally! Since unwrapping it and setting it up ( which was very easy) It has worked flawlessly at everything i throw at it. A solid well build computer for video production.
