Apple AirPort Express overview

  • 1Description

Now whole-house networking of all your Apple devices is available with the Apple AirPort Express Base Station. This simple but powerful network device can perform a variety of tasks - from wirelessly controlling your printer, to extending an existing Wi-Fi network's range, to listening to your music library from any speaker in the house.

Like most Apple products, the interface is simple yet elegant. Setting up your wireless network is so easy your kids could teach you to do it. Simply go to Wi-Fi settings, tap your network, give it a password, and you're done. It's that easy. Once you're on, you can manage your network from your iOS device or Mac computer. You can see settings at a glance, make changes, and apply updates.

The AirPort Express also features dual-band 802.11n and Wi-Fi support. This means it transmits at the two frequencies you will most likely use - 2.4GHz, which devices like the iPhone utilizes, and 5GHz, most commonly used by devices like the iPad and Mac. It is also compatible with older setups that use 802.11a/b/g.

But the AirPort Express isn't done showing off. You can also attach a printer to the USB port on the back of the unit and wirelessly control all print functions from anywhere in the house.

Security conscious users will appreciate the built in firewall, and the ability to set up separate Wi-Fi networks just for guests, leaving your data safe and secure.

Looking for a simple, one-stop solution for all your network needs? Look no further than the Mac AirPort Express. Its ease of use and networking power make it the right choice for Apple users.

Dual Band 802.11n and Wi-Fi
The two most commonly used frequencies can be accessed from the same unit - 2.4GHz for your iPhone, and 5Ghz for your iPad.
Easy Setup and Administration
Setup is a snap - or a tap - and administration can be done through your iPhone or iPad (or Mac). Everything is connected through a seamless interface.
Plays iTunes on Any Speaker
Stream your music library through any set of speakers in the house - using an audio cable sold separately. After attaching the Airport Express Base Station, you can then use iTunes on your computer or your iOS device, and choose which speakers you want your music to play on.
Printing Power
Set up a printer through the USB port, and then print from anywhere in the house. Stop looking for cables and connections with this wireless print device.

    Apple AirPort Express reviews

Airport Express Base Station is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 117.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's Apple. (obviously it's great) It's small, it's stylish, comes with a long cord to the outlet, and is EASY to set up. The only issue I had was with B&H shipping: the font you are using on your shipping labels makes the numbers 6 and 8 look a LOT alike. It's very confusing and I can see how it caused the mailman to leave my package DOWN THE STREET AT THE WRONG HOUSE. After I wasted three hours on the phone complaining to FedEx and the Post Office who both INSISTED my package had been delivered to the correct address, I walked down the street and found it myself. The lesson: change the font -- and change the world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to extend coverage to out building Use it to extend coverage to an out building. I use an airport extreme which covers my entire house(single story 3200sq ft) but wanted coverage to the out building. I used this as well as an additional airport extreme which I added in the far end of the house to reach the out building which is where I located the express. Not sure if I needed both but it works great. The out building is 85 feet away from the nearest extreme router. Coverage supports security camera in the out building with no issues. In short, I have main airport extreme with an additional extreme as a signal booster followed by the airport express located in the out building

Rated 4 out of 5 by from look nice This item is very simple for how much it cost. I mainly use it for wireless print on a laser printer that doesn't do wireless print and for that purpose it does it well. Set up is not as simple as it could be, but not hard. once set up it works well and didn't give me hiccups. I switched my router and that took me a little time to figure out how to trouble shoot it. I think its app could be simpler by making things clear to where to click. I mean one of the spot to click to trouble shoot is the amber light of a picture, really??? I shouldn't be complaining as it worked as it should be and of course apple does well with looks. It's small, nothing sticks out, looks elegant, no antennas, normal color etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly easy setup, great extender I started noticing some wifi signal drop-off towards one end of our house. I blame the density of our neighborhood and the number of competing wireless networks. At first, I purchased one fo the newer AirPort Extremes and used my existing Time Capsule to extend the network. It worked, but I couldn't help but think that I was spending more money that I had to. So, I purchased the Express to extend my original Time Capsule network. The result? No more wireless network issues in my house. I was able to return the $ Extreme thanks to this incredible little piece of hardware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great after some troubleshooting! This is my 2nd Airport Express, returned the first one, only to have exact same problems. After setting up with AirPort utility, had to manually put in DNS server numbers, and unplug my cable modem before it would work right. Not sure if this is something with the Airport or my cable modem. For use with an X32 digital mixer, had to change IP settings and change Gateway to 0.0.0.0 on the X32. I assume this is why lots of X32 users have trouble using an AirPort Express for remote control using iPad/iPhone apps. Works great after some troubleshooting! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I still like the old form for travel I still have the original Airport express and it's chugging away nicely. I moved into a new apartment with very bad wave propagation so I got this extend the range. I use a 3GB time capsule (also a very cool router) as my main router. The elegance of an Apple product is hard to deny. I plugged in this router. Launched the airport utility. It automatically sensed a new airport. It asked me if I wanted to create a new network or if I wanted to extend my existing (something sadly the old airport express doesn't do) et voila! It was connected to my existing network in about 2 minutes. So headache free! A couple of selling points over the old version. You can now extend an existing network rather than just join. It supports 2.3 and 5ghz simultaneously. I originally purchased an time capsule because I like that the backup capabilities (although I wish Apple would let you set the interval for backups, I don't need to backup continuously). Additionally, I needed more than a single ethernet port for 2 network printers and an NAS. If all I had was a single computer and a single printer this would have been my first choice. Now I just use my old unit to stream iTunes to my big stereo, or when I travel. All in all a great product. I purchased from B&H because unlike some other online retailers, they ship really fast, even if it's free shipping and their customer service if you ever have an issue is bar none the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wished I'd bought this earlier. I use a router to run my PA system remotely from my iPad. There was nothing actually wrong with my Cisco router. It worked well and never let me down but I wanted to play music from my iPod remotely too. This was the simplest way to do it. I fought buying it for 2 years because I hate to replace a perfectly good product but I am so pleased I did. Not only can I use AirPlay to control the break music, I have noticed that the Airport Express connects faster and has better distance than the Cisco so I got more than I bargained for. As a bonus as with all Apple products, the set up was a breeze. Very happy with this product and BH had a great price and fast delivery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Multitasking Performer I use 9 of the Airport Express Base Stations to connect to Air Play devices throughout the house & outside of the house. Features optical digital out, so a high end device with it's own D to A converter can yield excellent audio. Also features 3.5mm analog out (using the same jack) for conventional audio. I add one of these to send audio to the B&W A7 by optical connection & maintain a flawless drop out free audio connection. Added benefit is that each Airport Express extends the WiFi, so you achieve 5 bars in every room! Also includes a USB output for wireless printer connection. Easy setup using Airport Utility. Using that Utility, you can see which device has which clients (iPhone, iPad, etc.), and as you move across the house, the signal is handed off to the strongest station!
