Sony EVI-D80 overview

  • 1Description

The white Sony EVI-D80 PTZ Camera is a standard definition video camera that features a 1/4" CCD sensor, an 18x optical zoom lens, and robotic pan, tilt and zoom. SD video is output via composite or S-Video connections. The EVI-D80 can memorize up to 6 preset positions and uses standard RS-232C or RS-422 VISCA for remote interface. An IR Remote Commander Unit is also included.

The lens has a fast maximum aperture of f/1.4-3.0 and a 4.1-73.8mm focal length, which renders a 35mm equivalent of approximately 44.3-798mm. The minimum object distance is 0.39" at the wide end and 31.5mm at the telephoto end of the lens. When mounted upside-down, the E-flip function will automatically flip the image, so video will be displayed right-side-up. The EVI-D80 can pan 170° in either direction and tilt +90/-20°.

    Sony EVI-D80 reviews

EVI-D80 PTZ Camera (White) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Substantial Upgrade to EVI-D70 We use this camera to record meetings in hotel conference rooms, offices, and other locations, so room lighting and white balance are different in each location. In particular, we need a camera that can handle low light since customers turn the lights down to help the audience see the projector screen. So first we tried a used EVI-D70 to see if a PTZ camera would work in our application, and it did a good job, but the image quality was not up to modern standards. Once we determined the camera would work, we tried the EVI-D80 and the image quality was good and the low light capability was excellent, as was the 18X zoom. White balance can be selected from indoor, outdoor, and one-touch settings, so we get can get realistic flesh tones in about any setting. The motors are quiet, but you might want to keep the camera a few feet from the audience. The remote does a good job for zoom, but is pretty bad for pan and tilt in this application where you might have a moving speaker. So we use a control with a joy stick. This is not meant to replace a camera operator where tight/smooth shooting is required, we still use those, but can do an adequate job for low budget applications. I did try it in my church where we have a lighted stage, and found I needed to use the iris and shutter controls instead of the auto feature to handle the bright stage lighting. That being said, this camera has a 4x3 aspect and you may need 16x9 for you application.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works It works as advertised... a lower end robotic camera. Shooting outdoors have proved to be a chore, but it does give a clear image. If using for anything other than a surveillance cam, I would recommend getting a controller system. The camera works well though.
