Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens from Nikon is a versatile zoom lens with wide-angle to telephoto perspectives and VR image stabilization for reduction of the blur caused by camera shake. It's ideal as an everyday lens with a compact design, flexible focal range and fast autofocus. And, it affords superior close focusing with a minimum focus distance of 1.25' from every focal length. Designed for FX format DSLRs it is also compatible with DX-format cameras on which it provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 36-127.5mm.

Reliable, fast and near-silent auto focus is afforded by the Silent Wave Motor and internal focus system in which only the internal lens groups shift during focus maintaining the compact length of the lens. The M/A Switch mode enables immediate manual focus override for precise critical focus when needed.

In addition to the obvious advantages this versatile lens provides, it also employs a 7-blade rounded diaphragm, three aspherical lens elements and one extra-low dispersion ED element. This optical design controls chromatic aberrations and spherical distortion throughout the zoom range. Also Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating reduces ghosting and flare and heightens contrast.

Versatile Zoom Lens
With wide-angle to portrait length telephoto capability and a compact build, this is an effective lens for day-to-day carry and useful in many situations. On DX-format cameras it provides a 36-127.5mm focal length equivalence.
Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation
Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization, which is tailored to each lens, enables handheld shooting at up to four shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible for dramatically sharper images and HD videos - even in low light
Three Aspherical Lens Elements
The inclusion of aspherical elements virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberration, further improving image integrity
One Extra-low Dispersion (ED) Element
A single ED element offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration - even at the widest aperture settings
Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare
M/A Focus Mode Switch
This NIKKOR lens features a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens
Superior Close Focus
The minimum focus distance is just 1.25' at every focal length
Internal Focusing
All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel, which allows for a more compact, lightweight construction - as well as a closer focusing distance
Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm
The rounded 7-blade diaphragm renders a pleasing, natural background blur at its wider aperture settings

Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 146.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific multi-use lens This is a terrific multiple purpose lens, especially for semi-pro and student photographers like me who want the FX format without investing thousands of dollars in lenses. Nikon refers to it as an everyday walkabout lens and that about sums it up. It exceeds my expectations for overall ease of use and the quality of photographs. The range allows me to take close-up pictures with exceptional detail, and the zoom is great for portraits and most landscape shots. It's lightweight, and the Vibration Reduction (VR) makes it possible to photograph under low light conditions without a tripod. State of the art Nikon quality for an affordable price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent performance for the price ... Duh, if you compare this lens to a 28mm f/1.8 prime or 24-70mm f/2.8, it's not going to win the IQ battle. Nevertheless, it does perform quite well on its own merits. While the build quality is not quite bullet-proof pro optics caliber, it is sufficiently well built, similar to 24-120mm f/4 or 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 DX lens. Center and edge sharpness is excellent and color and contrast is very good. AF is more deliberate than fast but is accurate. VR works well; bokeh is not its strong suit. On my copy, the zoom action is firm but smooth; no zoom creep at all. It's sharp, light, versatile and cost effective all-purpose lens, and holds its own very well on a D800.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good do-all zoom at a good price point Covers the range I need for most applications. Zoom is smooth, focus is quick and quiet. It replaces the Nikon 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom on my D800. Light do to plastic construction. Willing to live with the plastic since the lens works well and it's less weight to lug around. I've been looking for a light-weight standard auto-focus FX zoom since I had to give up my manual focus Sigma 35-80 f/2.8-3.5 AI zoom/F3 combo due to failing eyesight. I do miss the legacy standard filter sizing. My AI lenses from Nikon and Sigma all used 52mm filters. If they could design lenses around one standard filter size then, why can't they do it now?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value and a sweet middle-of-the-road lens There's just something about this lens I really like. The best way I can put it is that it's enough for many types of photography. Compared to the pricey Nikon f/2.8 pro lenses, all of which I've owned or used, it's sharp enough, focuses quickly enough, and is much smaller and lighter. A great all-rounder. Pair this with a 50mm f/1.8 and you have a nice little kit that can handle many situations. I've thought about upgrading to the 24-120mm VR, but the added weight stops me every time... I enjoy a lightweight setup for my kind of work. Professionally, I've mainly done portraits, weddings, and food photography with this lens. I turn to speedlights with their AF assist lamps for dark wedding receptions and use strobes or natural light for food and portraits.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Sharp Disappointment The lens is very sharp, I will give it that. However, my copy has typical Nikon consumer lens decentering, with left side perfect, right side all stretched and fuzzy looking at 24mm. 85mm does not show the problem. Barreling at 24mm and pincushioning distortion at 85mm is outright nasty. I so wanted to like this lens on my D700, but alas, it is not to be. My 16-35mm VR Nikkor trumps it fabulously at 24mm. And to be expected, my 28mm f/1.8 Nikkor simply steals the show at equivalent focal length. It will work fine for many of you. It is just not for me in the face of better lenses in my collection. I will be relying on B&H's unparalleled return service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Multi Use Lens I purchased this lens soon after it was released. My usual lens is the the 24-70mm f2.8 which I shoot most of my work with. Paired up with my D800 its a great combo but the lens is heavy and seems even heavier during a long shoot. The Nikkor 24-85mm is much lighter and compact. It focuses fast and renders sharp images. The VR works well and really helps get those shots at low shutter speeds. This feature would be great on the 24-70mm f2.8 since its heft can make it hard to hold steady at times. The trade offs between the two are really just the loss of the faster f2.8 thru the zoom range and the tank like construction. As well as the cost. At $ the Nikkor 24-85mm is a steal compared to the $ price tag of the 24-70 f2.8Highly Recommended

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding I have 24-70/2.8g but its size and weight limits its everyday use. Picked up this lens mainly for its relatively small size and weight. Too my surprise this lens performs much more than what I expected initially. It's super sharp by f/9 - there is no difference in sharpness between the two. The zoom right on my copy is little tight between 24mm and 35mm but my 24-70 had even tighter zoom right throughout. My 24-70/2.8 has better distortion control; but, distortion can be corrected if you shoot digital and do post. I use this lens for both still and motion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Full Frame Standard Zoom I'm using this lens on a D800 and it has been nothing but a very pleasant surprise so far. Obviously the focal range is very useful for many types of photography from landscape to portraiture. It's not as heavy and it is more compact compared to the Nikon 24-70/f2.8. While you obviously lose from 2/3 to 1 1/3 f-stops of maximum aperture, you'll gain a very well working vibration reduction and of course 15mm of focal length. Focussing is fast and always spot on. Sharpness is simply astounding for a zoom lens in this price range. Considering the price and performance of this lens, it is one of the best deals you can get when buying a Nikon lens (next to the nifty fifty), IMO. It's an all-around-workhorse at a very good price tag.
