Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Overview

Spanning a useful range, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR from Nikon covers wide-angle to portrait-length focal lengths to suit working in a wide variety of situations. The optical design incorporates three aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element, which help to greatly reduce spherical and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range. A Super Integrated Coating also minimizes surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Complementing the optics, this lens also sports a Silent Wave Motor for fast and accurate autofocus along with VR II image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake by four stops.

Standard zoom is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 36-127.5mm equivalent focal length range.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by four stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Reviews

Very nice zoom

This was my first Lens purchase for my new Nikon D850. It is an extremely high quality super sharp wide-short telephoto Lens. Budget priced, it's great for general Photography. However, its 3.5/4.5 maximum aperture is too slow for very low light & fast action shooting. I'm going to upgrade to the 24-70mm f2.8E

Very good for price.

Very good Lens under $500.00 Extremely sharp, even at 85mm hand held likely due to the VR. However, it's a slow Lens, not capable of hand held shooting in low light. I'll be replacing it with a 24-70 f2.8E in the future.

As a photo enthusiast and not a professional; I'm not willing at the moment to spend more than $500 on a Normal zoom lens. Why? Because I also need a Super Wide and fast lens, a Telephoto zoom and a Macro lens. Did a research on all Third party lens, and decided to go with a native Nikon lens. Glad that I choose this lens, because is not to big or heavy. As soon as I got it tested it on my wall chart test and was blown away by the resolution and almost non chromatic aberration. Tested on a Nikon Z5.

great lens!

have this paired with D5200 and love it. So far none of the issues we have had with the VR vibrations on a slightly older 80-300 lens.

Exceeds expectations

I did a lot of on-line reading between the Nikkor 24-85mm and the 24-120mm to use with my Nikon D750 body. I decided to go with the 24-85mm and maybe add a longer lens in the future. So far I am very pleased. The first shots are crisp and clear. The weight is acceptable on my D750 body. I am pleased with my choice of the 24-85mm.

Very good for an economically priced lens.

While the Nikon 24-85mm VR Lens is certainly not a Pro Lens, it is extremely sharp. Too slow for some applications, it is nevertheless an excellent Lens for beginners & amateurs for under $500.00

question

will this lens work on the older D80 body? Not sure what style lens I need for the D80. Please advise on the style of lens required for the D80. Thanks
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, this lens is compatible with the Nikon D80 camera. The D80 is compatible with any autofocus lenses made by Nikon for the Nikon AF system as well as those made from other manufacturers for the same. As long as the lens mentions being compatible with Nikon autofocus cameras, it will be compatible with your camera.

question

Is this lens better than the 24-85 2.8-4.0 lens? I see this lens has the VR and the other lens above does not have the VR. I am trying to decide which lens to choose. 2.8 to 4.0 is more expensive lens but it seems the 3.5 to 4.5 is cheaper and better suited with the VR. Which is the best lens out of the 2 lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
The main benefit of the f2.8-f4.0 version of the lens is its macro feature. From 35mm to 85mm the lens has a rather powerful macro setting (for a zoom lens that is) which will allow up to 1:2 macro reproduction. The zooming capability of that makes it a bit more versatile as well. As far as which is best of the two comes down to what you may want to use the lens for. If close-up detailed shots are of interest, consider the f2.8-4 model. If you are more inclined to shoot in low light situations, the other version with VR would be the route to go.

On a full-frame camera specially for outdoor daytime weddings Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens BH #NI248535AFS will be a great lens. For low light situations I would recommend a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens.
