Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

If you have a Pentax camera with a smaller-size APS-C sensor and K mount, then the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM from Sigma is an incredibly versatile lens that is a real jack-of-all-trades lens you can carry in any situation. With a focal length spanning from a wide-angle 18mm up to a 250 mm telephoto zoom, with macro capabilities to boot, Sigma's 18-250mm could easily be your camera's first all-in-one lens, or a great replacement for several smaller lenses that you're looking to consolidate.

Sigma redesigned the optical and structural design of this lens in order to achieve a relatively compact size, at 4.0" long, as well as a close minimum focusing distance of 13.8" for macro photography. Their Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) construction maintains the structure of the lens, with little variation despite changing temperatures. The lens also incorporates a brass-made bayonet mount, to further reinforce the lenses durability and resistance to wear and tear over time.

The minimum focusing distance is the same throughout the focal length of the entire zoom range, and provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9. As an added benefit over fixed focal length macro lenses, the size and framing of subjects can quickly and easily be adjusted by rotating the zoom ring. For even further convenience, at each focusing distance on the side of the lens barrel, the maximum magnification ratio is also displayed.

For high image quality, you know you've got to have high quality glass, and Sigma has incorporated their Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element into the 18-250mm. In addition to the SLD element, three aspherical lenses, including a double-sided aspherical lens, have been used in the lens' construction--offering excellent correction of color aberration, for better clarity and quality of images throughout the zoom range.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been employed to reduce flare and ghosting with this lens. This makes it resistant to strong incident light, such as backlight behind a subject, providing sharper, high contrast images even shooting into a light source. To prevent internal reflections from occurring, the included petal-type lens hood can be attached in order to block out extraneous light.

For a lens that offers a wide-angle to telephoto focal length, and the ability to zoom-in with macro photography, Sigma's 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM made for Pentax cameras is more than a match. Whether you're on a macro product shoot, a walk in the park, or have a wedding to go to, this lens will help you shoot high quality images in any situation.

Possibilities as Wide as its Zoom Range
Going from an 18mm wide-angle lens in the park, to an 85mm portrait lens at a wedding, and later attaching a heavy 250mm lens for wildlife or sport photography means you'll have to carry pounds of gear around with you, by hand or on your back, all day long. With the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM, you won't have to risk dust entering your Pentax camera body, dropping one of your lenses as the bride's aunt runs into you with a glass of wine, or fumbling to switch to your zoom lens as you watch an eagle soar away--missing opportunities because you had the wrong lens at the time
In Close, or Wide Open
Not only is the zoom range excellent for a variety of situations, but the focus range is also conducive to macro photography--with the added benefit of zooming in on the tiniest textures or creatures. With a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 you can get an up-close and personal shot of the petals of a flower, then immediately zoom out and catch a group photo before anyone blinks
Compact Construction
Incorporating double-sided aspherical lenses, and redesigning the lenses construction, Sigma has made improvements in keeping this lens at a relatively compact size, yet still achieving an outstanding zoom range. The filter thread diameter has been reduced to 62mm--while, with a 13x zoom range, the length of the lens still remains a mere 3.4" long
Tough Exterior, yet Quality Interior
While the design and construction of the lens has kept it relatively compact, the new Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material has been used to keep it strong and resistant to weathering effects. In addition, a brass made bayonet mount reinforces the strength applied to the surface of the lens. The combination of these features leads to reduced contractility with changing temperatures, a higher quality of lens construction, and allows for slimmer parts to be used--keeping it compact and strong
Flare, Aberrations, and Ghosting Reduction
Everybody says you should invest in your glass, and Sigma's 18-250mm provides just the way for you to do that. Three aspherical glass elements offer correction for distortion, four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements provide optimum color correction and sharpness, and a Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. This array of optical features assure high image quality throughout the entire zoom range, and widely varying lighting situations.

    Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM for Pentax K Cameras is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM Pentax Generally I love Sigma lens in terms of IQ and picture quality so overall this is a nice lens, just give a bit over exposure under some critical light situation. Very sharp from 8 to 11 and work perfectly well on 250mm zoom. I just wanted to have all in one lens so I bought it and I must say that it was not bad decision at all. I love this lens and it is a great lens in all aspects though a bit slow on AF in low light but that is the common problem with almost zoom lens. AF motor is very quite and almost silent when zooming in or out. I will defiantly buy more product from Sigma! Service from B&H was amazingly fast indeed and I do appreciate it of couse.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems to do the job Used extensively on one day trip and took no other lenses along. Took about 100 images, (some 3 shot brackets) in a mid afternoon environment, and came away with a surprisingly large number of keepers. The contrast of the results were pretty good and the zoom range worked for me. This isn't the sharpest lens on the planet, but it looks good relative to cost. Corners seem to soften a mite under extreme enlargement. Too bad the lens hood doesn't feature a cutout for a polarizer. The zoom motor is extremely quiet and fast. So far, I am pleased with my purchase and have taken 3 lenses out of my kit that I can retire.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive little package As a recent Pentax convert, I have only a K-50 body and two kit lenses. I quickly bought a Sigma 70-300 solely for it's longer reach. It was a little too much of the same kit stuff, plus quite bulky, so I returned. Now then, onto the 18-250; convenience and quality all in one neat package. Gives me a tiny bit more reach, quiet, fast focus PLUS macro that functions like a real macro lens. I take my new camera everywhere now. Sigma's first big test was a professional bicycle race in Montreal. I carried it for 9 hours around my neck without any complaints. A handy little lock button keeps barrel creep in check, great when running and walking for the next shot. In terms of photo quality, I came away very pleased. Image quality is as good or better than the kit glass. Bicycles going 40 MPH plus are no problem for this rugged little lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile It Is... ...and it takes pretty good photos too.I got this as a walk around and take it with me lens for when I don't have the opportunity to pack my prime lenses or my more costly Pentax zoom.I gave the lens its first major test yesterday and it came through pretty well. The minor issues were probably more to do with the unsteady photographer (on a moving boat, so some focal issues) and the conditions (super bright on the water, so some fringing in the dark areas). I probably wouldn't have noticed if I weren't examining the shots in Lightroom. So far, though, I'm pleased with the quality and versatility of the len and I was able to purchase it for about $. I consider myself an enthusiastic amateur. This lens will tide me over until I can afford the Pentax *60-250.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all purpose lens I have been using mine for a few years now on my Pentax K-3 body and I get decent results with it. The nice thing is that for events that are not super critical like shooting my daughter's sporting events or even political rallies I can get away with a light-weight setup. No, it's probably not as sharp as a 17-50mm 2.8 lens or a 70-200mm 2.8 lens, but it gets the shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Value This is a great lens when you don't want to carry many different lenses with you. There are faster and sharper lenses, but not with this range. And I find the lens remarkably sharp. I use a Pentax K5,which has image stabilization built in. That undoubtedly helps me get sharp images. This is not a low-light lens, especially at 250 because the max aperature there is 6.3. But for general use, I am very impressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You wont miss a shot Great lens for travel and casual events. Quiet and fast focusing in any light on my Pentax K5iis. I have not experienced any zoom creep in the few weeks I've owned it, it has a lock if I need it. Macro works well. It's not as sharp as my 17-50 Sigma lens or any prime so don't expect that, but it takes good quality pictures fast at any distance, so you don't miss anything. Point, zoom, shoot, enjoy your vacation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from perfect for everyday I was looking for an everyday lens, I looked at the Pentax 18-270mm but at 589.00 I felt this was a better deal, also offering Macro. I have a Sigma 10-20 wide angle and that has been a great lens. I'm very satisfied with this lens and highly recommend it.
