Nikon 1420B overview

  • 1Description

Offering a comfortable wide-angle field of view in a small size, the NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 from Nikon is a manual focus prime well-suited for landscape, nature, and documentary shooting. Its modest f/2.8 maximum aperture strikes a balance between its sleek form factor and being fast enough for working in low-light conditions. Additionally, the optical design uses a Close Range Correction system, which maintains consistent image quality and sharpness from the minimum focusing distance of 8.3" to infinity.

Wide-angle 28mm lens is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 42mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is suitable for working in a variety of lighting conditions and also contributes to the compact, lightweight form factor.
Close Range Correction system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 8.3" to infinity.
Manual focus design is benefitted by engraved focus distance and depth of field scales.
Seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Nikon 1420B reviews

    NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 47.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Gem of a Lens Small. Smooth. Built like a tank. Will last a lifetime. Ultra sharp. Smooth bokeh. Very useful at close range (CRC) for close-ups. Virtually no distortion (straight lines straight). Like I said - it's a gem. This lens gave me great pictures everytime. Too bad they didn't keep the same design on the AF-D version (which is very modest compared to the predecessor). Expertise: Semi-pro Problems Encountered: None. Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Nikon 28mm AF-D, other Nikkors Items I Recommend: filters, F100

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, classic, solid. There's a reason the Nikkor AI-S lenses are still being used (and still being made, in the case of this focal length): they're great quality! While I've only owned it for a few weeks, it's a delight to use and shoot with. I'm using it primarily for video, so I have no need for autofocus. I'm especially impressed with the very close minimal focus distance...granted, you'll get your typical wide angle distortion, but it's great for certain types of shots. As with the other Nikkor AI-S lenses, it seems to have a warmer tone than the Canon line (I'm using this lens on a Canon 5d Mark III, by the way). Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply the Best! Perfect: No. The best 28 mm wide angle lens that Nikon makes: YES.I have never seen a sharper or more contrasty 28mm wide angle lens than this one. Not even Leica or Zeiss are superior. Also, very low distortion. A fault: it has significant vignetting at f/2.8, gets mush better at f/4 and none visible at f/5.6 (shooting the sky or other such scenes. Sharpest at both f/4 and f/5.6. No lens is smoother focusing than this one. With the Nikon D759, best focus is pretty much at the center of the green meatball. I would not let the fact that it is manual focus, only put me off. AF would be nice, but that is not a deal breaker because the lens is otherwise so excellent that NO other Nikkor wide angle fixed focal length lens can beat it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly one of Nikon's best lenses ever I did a lot of research before buying this lens, and everything I read said that this was one of Nikon's best lenses ever - and having tested it now extensively myself, I think I agree. As a landscape photographer, I shoot almost exclusively around f8 or f11, so I can't comment on the lens' performance at f2.8 - but at smaller apertures on my Nikon D810, it delivers absolutely beautiful images that are stunningly sharp from edge to edge. As a bonus, the straight-sided aperture blades deliver excellent sunstars, too. And needless to say, an old-school made-of-metal lens like this feels so much more substantial and well-made than any modern, plasticky equivalent, with super-smooth manual focusing action, etc. I would very highly recommend this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Quality Optics and Workmanship I purchased this lens as a normal lens for a DX format on a Nikon D300s. Though I find myself wishing for something wider, at times, I find the really wide coverage taken care of by my equally stellar Tokina 11-16 2.8. I chose this lens also for its reputation as an extremely sharp lens with build quality to match. I am absolutely delighted in both areas! The smoothness and dampening of the focus ring is simply superlative; far more impressive than the current crop of pro lenses in Nikon's lineup, in my opinion. Sharpness, even at 2.8 in less than ideal lighting, is especially noteworthy. Great product, especially for FX users. I unreservedly recommend getting a new one while Nikon still makes them. ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb lens This manual focus lens is simply amazing. Color contrast is outstanding and it's remarkedly sharp at all apertures. I use it on my Nikon D800 and when I need to take a close up photo I switch to DX format and the result is a great shot with little distortion unlike the 16-35mm f4 which cost twice as much. What I love the most is the lens is light weight. Focusing is not a problem - it does take a little getting used to after so many years of using AF lenses but with practice I'm getting faster.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing Better I'm a professional having used everything from 8x10 to 35mm and honestly, haven't found a lens I like more. I presently have been using this on my D600 and D3. The sharpness is incredible wide open down to f22. The feel and handling ability of this lens is a dream. Not being auto focus is an asset. It allows you to control the area your concentrating on without worrying if your autofocus focus on something that isn't important. By all means I highly recommend this lens. Hank Taylor

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens!!! The 28mm 2.8 AIS is as sharp as any Nikon wide angle lens i have used. Including the 24-70mm, the 16-35mm, 14-24mm, and the 24mm 1.4G. I give a slight edge in performance to the 24mm 1.4G, but i prefer to use the 28mm 2.8 AIS b/c it is lighter, just as sharp, and focuses extremely close. The bokeh is beautiful, there is minimal distortion, and the MF is buttery smooth. I currently use it on my D3s, and plan on using it on the D800.
